I think that was aimed Margaret Thatcher. (*nudge, nudge wink*)

I like how this promo shows a man flipping the bird, but also shows Rainbow and Thomas the Tank Engine.

Harvie Richards Good ol’ Michael Aspel. I’m guessing it didn’t have the same meaning in 1988 like it does now.

We did love them just the way they were, but American offensive sign language and the wrath of Thatcher on Thames Television soon was to wreck this error. :D

The 1990 Broadcasting Act and the 1991 franchise round ruined ITV forever. Thatcher brought in both to give the treasury a financial windfall and to hell with programmes or quality. It is 2015 and ITV are still reeling from this 25 years on.

Don't forget this is when ITV was getting infested with BBC types as we can see by the exclusion of Benny Hill fired the following year by a BBC plant pretending to be freelance who also fired 300 staff, then there was Death on the Rock..

She was angered at Thames for "Death on the Rock" and was friends with the head of Carlton, which also helped bring down Thames from what I heard.

There was an alternative ITV promo with Everlasting Love instead of Just the Way You Are which was shown on before the early morning news.

Sadly Thatcher came along and ruined it. There was suggestions that Thames TV’s This Week, which had an edition called Death on the Rock (investigating an incident where the SAS shot dead three IRA members in Gibraltar) was part of the cause of Thatcher’s plans to change ITV for the worse. Lo and behold it got bad, especially when the brilliant Thames were ousted in favour of the dire Carlton.
