I purchased this. Your review is spot on. I didn’t think it through that a 2 channel power supply would cost 280.00 USD. It is great for small desk projects. Once you get used to it it’s not to fiddley.

Hilarious how Marco Reps's review got referenced, kinda neat. SDG's review certainly added a lot to the product knowledgebase and is extremely vital to watch if you're in the market for such a thing, especially if after watching it you decide its something you must have! To be honest, Miniwave's stuff is the impulse buy gadget go-to for engineers. They do make a lot of cool stuff to covet.

The 2.4g wireless connection is for the display, you can wirelessly control the psu module with that display, pretty neat! That's also why they sperate. :)

Just got one of these in a sale. Great little unit. Aside from some initial issues getting the wireless connection to work to facilitate control of the PSU using the Monitor, it worked as advertised right out of the box. Lovely! The interface is a bit weird, and it's definitely a bit fidly, but having spent the last couple of hours playing with it, it's not too bad. The only major criticism I have is that I can't find a way to switch the PSU on and off remotely. You can wind the voltage up and down on the fly, but that's potentially a bit dangerous, obviously. Being able to remotely switch output on/off would seem to be a pretty obvious thing you would want to do, no? Aside from that being able to remote control power to a device that I'm not able to get at; because it's in a vacuum pot for example, this will be invaluable.

@SDG Electronics is it possible to add a second MDP-905 module to parallel and increase current? Like 19v and 5amps to power a notebook
@javierpallalorden5 жыл бұрын
At this price I would rather buy a Rigol DP832 (with 3 separate outputs).
@Mtaalas5 жыл бұрын
It's double the price, but still more than double the value really... It has remote sense wires and all that jazz :) Though for a hobbyist who doesn't have the money, this is quite a good value.
How to stack a differential power supply, from the setup and display unit point of view?
@NiMareQ2 жыл бұрын
Is the display needed at all? I feel like it has no real added value. You were using the controls on the powersource itself all the time anyway.

I vaguely remember them saying they were going to open source this thing eventually. I could be wrong, but that would be pretty neat.

The manufacturer contacted me to do a review of this power supply a while ago and I asked for 2 units, one for the review and one to be given away to my subscribers but I never heard back from them. I think a lot of development went into this, it has a relatively high part count so that might explain the higher cost which is fine for those who really need something like this. But does anyone really need this? 😊A gopher NPS1601 does a superb job as a bench power supply, granted without all the bells and whistles.

Can you power a TS100 or TS80 from this power supply?
@MichaelBeeny5 жыл бұрын
Hummm, too expensive, too fiddly and really kinda pointless. I like a power supply with big display, heavy so it wont move about the bench, preferably with analogue, voltage and current pots. No silly magnets to almost hold it together! On the positive side, you did get it free...that's a great price!
@jan.tichavsky5 жыл бұрын
It's expensive because it's properly designed and has good specs for a DC supply. Also very useful for many technicians who need portable supply. Heavy one is nice for the lab but outside is rather inconvenient. If I want good reliable power supply then I would not want to cheap out on some basic aliexpress design.

Good review Steve 👍 And I agree, this little fella no doubt has it's uses for certain project types, It's just a bit too fiddly really . Cheers mate John

It's a cute gadget, well designed and sturdy. I only would use it as a multi-input battery charger. For that purpose it is too expensive and too limited, since it does not offer capacity check, nor amh monitoring.

The input current includes everything, the displays, wireless link etc. I think it has a linear post regulator stage too, so some losses there too

I'd like to see a 3 minute teardown video on this, just out of curiosity what made them price it so high. If somebody invested so much effort and money in this product, I'm assuming they had a very good marketing idea for it, I just don't see it.

I would have liked to see the input noice level, seeing it was powered by DC. Perhaps the input was squicky clean?

Watch Schematix and Marco Reps’ video on the unit, that should clear everything.
@tanishqbhaiji1033 жыл бұрын
A USB source will almost never be clean, you need a linear PSUs or even better a battery.
@tanishqbhaiji1033 жыл бұрын
It can do about 4mV Vpp when connected to a battery and no decoupling caps.

After 3 months mine sits in the plastic cases it came with. There was a promise of a battery charger and a signal generator, perhaps that will help get them out of the packages And everyday hobby usage.

It looks nice but as you mentioned it is too small and slow to use. It would need to be a little bigger to feel solid and not slip. I think it is more of a power supply instead of a lab power supply. It would be useful for powering finished devices in the field but for designing something new you want something bigger. Maybe someone will add a quick shut off with a custom firmware. Mini has always given you full access to the software which is nice. The price is also way too high. You can get a power supply that does the same thing for $70-80 so I don´t see the value in paying 3 times that for something so small. I think it has it´s uses though.
@thetechgenie73745 жыл бұрын
I wish they made one that has a internal battery, then would be useful. Otherwise way to small to used in daily laboratory practice. Rather have a traditional power supply with potentiometers to set the voltage and current. As far as price/performance ratio this power supply is too expensive for what the device performs. In terms of specifications similar power supplies are for sale for prices around $70.00. The MDP-P905 is in my opinion is for someone do not mind spending some extra money, or sure I say waste money on a product that unique and not really useful for what it is. I say run and hide. Make one maybe larger with a internal battery then you catch my attention. You have to remember these big tech reviewers get this stuff for free. As much as they claim to give a not bias and honest review? That not really the case. If they bash a product to much , they risk not receiving as much, or more free products? Only way you get likely a honest no hold back type of review is from people that had to pay for the product and realize major design issues, or to overpriced for what it is. So take this review with a gain of salt? My opinion is as stated earlier, this power supply is too expensive for what the device performs. Make power supply thicker and put 18650 in and I buy one.
@SpeccyMan5 жыл бұрын
Yes, far too pricey and far too fiddly with a display unsuited to old eyes like mine. I will stick with my trusty 75W (30V 2.5A) linear bench PSU with its twin moving coil meters.
@tanishqbhaiji1033 жыл бұрын
You don’t understand the scalability, extremely low noise and ripple and the excellent transient response capabilities of the unit with the constrained form factor and the high efficiency. This is first PSU with a switching pre regulator and a linear output stage I have ever seen and this is irreplaceable for someone with the specific needs.

Pretty cool, but I'd have expected it to be about half the price. If it had been half the price, I'd have ordered one. Give it a few months, though, and it probably will be. :)
@sdgelectronics5 жыл бұрын
It's dropped a little in price since I received it a few months ago. The problem is, it probably does cost a lot of money to manufacture - the finish is basically like a premium smartphone and it no doubt has expensive components inside to get the performance. It's really high quality, but I can't see the target market for something like this.
@JohnAldred5 жыл бұрын
I do like the modularity of it, and it would be neat for little projects you're working on (especially one I'm working on right now that requires three different voltages), but I agree on not seeing the target market at this price point. The full set of six with the screen comes out to £650 from the prices I see on Banggood right now, which is nuts considering you'd still have to buy half a dozen power supplies for them. For that kind of money, there are much better options out there.

Thanks for the analysis, Steve. I have a question for those who suggest this device is for field work: Do you mean a strawberry field? I roll up with a big cart, all kinds of measuring equipment and stuff, a chair and a second cart for documents. Also mains power is always in vicinity when there is something to fix. Only the professionals know the secret art of extension cable handling. For me this device is to fiddly and unusable in lab work, nor field work. It's a gadget. And because of that it is too expensive for its purpose. Get a decent power supply for the 200 bucks. One that hurts when it drops onto your foot, what this unit not does even though it is built for sliding from your desk:P ...a not so serious criticism, because those who want to buy a gadget buys this thing anyway;) As Dave stated in his review, the noise characteristics are quiet good in this little bugger.
