There's a depressingly common failure mode on this sort of construction with Bosch ECUs - the big bits fall off. Typically the larger tantalum caps just come adrift. They can be repaired, but it is a bit tricky as one would imagine, mainly due to the many fine & fragile bond wires present that are embedded in the gooey conformal coating that has to be cleared out the way to perform the repair. They seem to love bolting them to hot bits of engine for some reason, so lots of heat cycles.

Wow - blast from the past there. I used to do a lot of side-projects for Richard Martin Lighting back then. I recall visiting Clay Paky with Richard to negotiate the purchase of his first few units. I designed and built a portable controller for him that was based on the operational design of a Thornlite 120 studio lighting desk so the LDs would be familiar with it. A friend did the software, I did the hardware. As one commenter said, they used these a lot on TOTP, Richard supplied their lights for a very long time. Before the Scans came along, and for a fair while after, I did control boxes for quite a lot of Richard's lights. I confess to being responsible for a rash of UFO sightings in my local area....one light unit in particular made the local papers. I was testing a control unit of one of his latest creations, in my garage, firing it out onto the clouds on a dark and somewhat misty night. The effect was simple enough - HMI lamp, strips of mirror attached to a flexible rotating & articulating platform, with a selection of dichroic filters. This created bars of light that span and zoomed, depending on what you did with the actuators. Happy days...

@@ampuh214 it's mostly true, a hot air station isn't going to be too effective at heating up an entire pcb so a preheater is essential. It does go up to 500C which is how many of the repair channels remove parts, but that's not the correct way to do it.

Most viewers do not necessarily understand a solder iron power ratings nor the ohms law. It would be best if you mention the JBC cartridges are 2.5 ohms rated unlike others that are 3.5, 4, or 5.6 ohms, and thus consumes more power and are suited for stations that deliver the required power for the cartridge.
@RingZero
@RingZero 2 күн бұрын
You may want to add the steps of using a power consumption meter and validate advertised power ratings by dipping the iron in water and monitor its recovery to the set temps. Such as this one - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHnahGx5eap8ia8

It is good for only the cleanest easiest of BGA jobs...NO cleaning on offer here! I use many different fluxes for different purposes. From plain rosin mixed with isopropyl alcohol + glycerin - to johnson chemical Ruby Fluid zinc chloride flux. Depending on the job. There is no one flux for all jobs.

Very thorough diag & repair - nice one. A cynical person might suspect that these manufacturers know full well what happens to these glues over time and are perfectly happy about it.....a slightly less cynical person might suspect that the Chinese manufacturers they all use are less scrupulous than one might like and are using cheap alternatives to the specified adhesives. An entirely non-cynical view might be that the manufacturers have been duped, a bit like the old fake capacitor electrolyte scandal from a few years back. Whichever is true, it seems a good first step with anything like this is to remove all traces of adhesive, inspect very carefully for damaged traces & vias and go from there.

Mine is an older model, not as deep as yours and quite a bit taller. I am not sure what the actual model number is. I have misplaced most of my tips which is why they gave them away as the newer models used a different kind of and shorter tip. I just wished it had a way to display the temperature.
