I'd still say it's too early for winners/losers, but people pretending that Necas isn't also an Elite player like Rantanen was so intellectually dishonest. Even if Rantanen gets back to the form we all expect him to wherever that may end up being, Colorado still did really well man.

Necas is better than people think. You can say he lacks consistency, right, but he is still relatively young and playing with Nathan in first line with Avs system makes a huge difference. With Hurricanes he used to play in 2nd line with some random dudes and mediocre ice time, yet he made it top 10 in league in points this season.

He made it to top 10, but then became ice cold for like the last 20 games. To be fair, he was playing with bums on the second line in Carolina. In Colorado, there's no reason he shouldn't be a ppg+ player with exposure to Mackinnon and Makar.

Mikko, or his agent, played themselves. They thought they could just slow roll the contract situation, and they could hold the Avs hostage with the threat of leaving in FA...and it didn't happen. Colorado made the difficult decision to trade Mikko. How is Carolina going to feel when they gave up what they did for a 3 month rental? To my knowledge, the Avs offer was to make Mikko the highest paid winger in the league. That SHOULD have been enough, because he keeps saying it wasn't about the money. If it wasn't about the money, and you loved being in Colorado so much, why wouldn't you sign the contract? It was 100% about the money. Mikko thought, or his agent convinced him, he was worth $13.5-$14.5M. He's good, but he is not worth that. To a bottom dwelling team he may be, but if he wants to win Cups, it isn't going to happen. People don't seem to realize the return the Avs got in this deal. Necas was the scoring leader on Carolina. He is also cost controlled for another year for about $3M less than Mikko. They also got Drury who seems to be a decent 3rd-4th liner with familial ties to the organization. Also don't forget the draft pick. The Avs need as many of those as they can get as they turn them in to decent players...like Devon Toews.

Two picks actually, 2nd and a 4th. I hate seeing Mikko go, but I agree it’s hard to argue with the reasons for the trade or the return, considering the possibility of having to overpay him to stay (see his last contract’s training camp holdout where he didn’t budge at all on his AAV $ ask, forcing the Avs to cave), or losing him for nothing in free agency

To be fair moose hit a ton of posts with Colorado too, it’s his shooting style and not unique since the trade. I think I read he struggled with new equipment he’s never played with before. It’s also a new team and sometimes takes time to adjust. That being said Necas and Drury adjusted real fast to Colorado. I think by the trade deadline there will be a larger sample size to compare and see how the trade is going… I have heard rumors that trade talks are struggling in Carolina like they did in Colorado. Canes fan here. Our organization is an amusement park ride called “The Rod Brind’Amour Experience.” There’s a sign when you get in line that reads “No passengers allowed; you must exhibit this much work ethic to ride” and the picture on that sign is the famous photo of an absolutely jacked, young Rod doing pushups. Mikko is a) likely still pissed that he was dealt and b) can’t rely on Nate anymore. Once he buys in and embraces what we do he can fit right in. Still too early. And he’s injured today, which doesn’t help to build that chemistry. If we get to season’s end and he’s just not fitting in, then we’ll truly know. And in that case, I can feel comfortable knowing our front office simply took a a swing and missed. We will all soon know what Moose can do without MacKinnon.

Everything with RBA's "system" is predicated on dump & chase, outmoded man to man defense, & lets out-work our opponents for 82 spirit draining regular season games & then crash & burn in the playoffs every year. Lift more weights and waste energy practicing like the worlds coming to an end doesn't qualify as a viable NHL coaching "system." The Canes are 0-12 in ECF games since 2006. Until they prove that they can accomplish something tangible in ECF & SCF games they'll continue to be considered little more than regular season show ponies. Let there be no mistake about it, Rod the Bod has been outcoached in every one of the six playoff series the Canes have been blown-out of & eliminated in over the last six postseasons. He's proven to be a horrendous in-game tactician as the man is as stubborn and inflexible as they come. Making adjustments during playoff games & through-out a postsesson series is not in his repertoire. It's put up or shut up time and given the fact that the Canes roster remains dreadfully weak at Center & Goaltender, & their PP is a dumpster fire, I can guarrantee they'll be gone by the 2nd round of the postseason again this year.

Too early to say. As a diehard Canes fan a few things to consider: 1. Canes locker room was hit by sickness during this time in which many players (staff and even announcer) were out, or should have been out for at least one if not two games. 2. Carolina. It’s an interesting situation. As NHL fan at large watching a fair number of games featuring Avs…I always regarded Rantanen as the great support forward in the elite tier. Yes he benefited from MacKinnon but there were many times when Rantanen drove offensive outcomes. MacKinnon was followed chased and driven off the puck with his speedy talented playmaking. Rantanen tho would sort of bat clean up. He often had great moments because MacKinnon was being marginalized out. He was very inclined to effect points based on his own strong play. There are plenty of offensive variables on this Canes offense. I would think he slots in well with trial and error. Seth Jarvis with him might be a good line pairing.

The problem with Carolina is, the coach coaches in a manner which isn't conducive to elite players thriving. Rod loves to roll 4 lines and isn't afraid to put his stars on the third line to spread out the talent. As a result, you have rookies playing on the first line and 5 game stretches where Carolina can't score any goals. Mikko's numbers will definitely suffer. I've got to admit I was totally wrong with my initial reaction to the trade I was totally unaware how good necas is. I'm still going to miss having mikko on the avs but I've absolutely jumped on the hype for necas since joining the avs the team has had a new life to them

That top line has an entirely different feel to it now. Necas and Mack are *elite* possession players with incredible speed and top-notch zone entry.

As an avs fan, Rantenan was a great player. But rarely drove his own line. He was always with Nate. Nate would sometime double shift with third liners and elevate them. Rants was elevated by Nate dogg. Still a great player, but without that caliber of player to open the ice up or drive the entry speed, Rants isn't as top tier.

add one hell of a defensive play that led to the rush that Necas got the game winner last night. Necas and Makar are only 26. Mac and Lehky are 29. Scary.

As a hurricane supporter the office massively undervalued Necas. It should have been KK with Drury and we had plenty of other players with deepth to add. Necas has gone to a line that suits him to a tee, in saying that we could of had that at Carolina with rantanen coming over. Big time F up by the hurricanes office

Rantanen will do really well, but he's got a lot to learn. He's played almost his whole career in one system with one coach. He's gonna break out towards the end of the year. I don't know that he'll get the points he was in colorado only because he's not going to be playing with MacKinnon and makar. But he might also surprise everyone and be the head of that offense once he learns it. Too early to tell

Avs might have gotten the better one there. Necas seems to fit really well into their top line with his speed, and he plays D. Having him signed for 6,5m next year is huge, but Necas has always been streaky so far. Who says this doesn`t continue? If the Avs had McDs contract on the table for Rantanen (12,5 * 8) he would have signed.

The Avs weren't going to pay Mikko 14m. Even if what was true from rumors that they offered him 11.75 per, he was not willing to settle for that. The ONLY way at this point that Carolina wins this trade is if they win the cup. I don't foresee that happening cause the Avs are going to do that. It was far better for the Avs to get something from Mikko than to to lose him for nothing in the FA market. I think it would be hilarious if Mikko comes back and resigns in the off season with the Avs and they become an even larger power house than they already are but I am not sure that is feasible since Makar is going to be coming up on contract renewal soon and the Avs are not letting him go....

You guys realize Canes played all but 2 games since his acquisition on the road and the flu going around the team and everyone being sick right? Right? Like that's been a story every night for the team. Players missing games. And then he gets hurt from a shot to miss last game before break. Combined with adjusting to RBa system. Every big player, guentzel, Trocheck, Skjei, burns, Hamilton... They all struggled at first. It's 6 games.

Canes are weak down the middle... only Aho is solid... past Stanley Cup winners have tremendous two way center depth and shutdown defense... only Slavin qualifies as top tier... Canes getting bounced again in the playoffs until they understand playoff hockey is much different than regular season... Analytics gets you into the playoffs but doesn't work in the playoffs.

They are 5th, but it seems like they score goals in bunches. One game they'll have 7, and then fail to register more than 1 goal during a 5 game stretch (this happened prior to Saturday). Their offense isn't consistent and their top guys can't use brute force to score goals like McDavid, Draisaitl, Mackinnon, Matthews, etc can. Their top guys also regularly get demoted to the third line like Jarvis and Svechnikov. As a result, they can't get into a rhythm and play with their other top guys. Mikko did well in Colorado because the coach wasn't afraid to attach him to Mackinnon's hip and play that line 25 minutes a night. Not to mention Makar and Toews breaking it out to those guys.

Have you watched the games or are you just looking at the stats? Rantanen's been great and very unlucky not to have 3 or 4 more goals. His underlying stats have also been great. Just wait and you will see his stats go up as well.
