Wow! What a combo! The SDRplay is so much more than yet another SDR dongle, but has gobs of capability and up to 14 bits digitization. It makes an outstanding general coverage receiver, or a great panadapter to go with your HF rig. And the price is right, too! Subscribe: / davidcasler . Ask Dave Playlist: goo.gl/inaQeB. Thanks for this review Dave. I finally decided to buy an SDR Play after watching this review. Still waiting on the backordered MFJ-1708SDR to fully integrate it into my setup with my ICOM 7300. Using the SDR Uno software also lets you record the IQ feed so you can go back later and hear what you missed on another channel. That is so powerful. You can even play with the waterfall, apply filters, and adjust volume just as if you were listening live.

Wow, What a coincidence! I ordered a RSP-1A last Thursday night from HRO. It is scheduled to be here tomorrow. I forgot they had several locations... I might have been able to get it sooner. Thank you for the simple explanation of S-signal readings vs dbm. I hope you will revisit that topic on another video. going from s1 to s9 please. My original motivation for the purchase, was to use the RSP-1A for full duplex operations for the LOS satellites with my FT-857D. But I see it has many, many uses in the shack. I only started in radio a year and a half ago - with the SDRPlay RSP2/SDRUno. It is a great learning tool for anyone looking to become a ham - or even for the pure enjoyment of scanning the almost entire radio spectrum. Using the SDR makes it easy to visualize concepts & terminologies associated with radio. So much so, that it was one of my key learning tools. I passed my exam last month. I have bought the venerable Yaesu FT-840 (a great performer) as my first transceiver and I plan to couple this with the SDRPlay RSP2 via a Receive-Transmit Interface. I eventually hope to get a separate receive loop antenna - to help with noise reduction. Even if I paid top dollar for all this - it would amount to a fraction of the cost of the ICOM 7300. Anyway, my main point is that if you are new to radio, or thinking of taking up the hobby - even as a listener, the SDRPlay devices a phenomenal way to open up a world signals and communications that beggars belief. These devices can do so much more too! 73 Adrian EI9HAB P.S. Dave, thank you for all your education vids, they were an enormous help in me getting my license!

Fantastic discussion of the SDR that helped me to understand it much better. I have an Icom IC-7410, and from your discussion, it looks like I could use the RSP-1A as a stand-alone panadapter. Dave, I would like to know what effects say 500 watts from your home radio would have on the SDRplay? I have a FTDX3000 and would most likely do as you did for home use. Really why I ask is for portable use to get a panadapter screen to help finding stations. Will 100 to 500 watts effect the receiver in the SDRplay? Chuck

I use the RF Output plug on the back of the FTDX3000 to feed the SDRplay. That way the SDRplay is protected from exposure to the 500 watt signal going out the antenna.

Hey, how would you go about having the SDRPlay as a panadapter with a radio that doesn't provide an RFout? Is it possible to fry the SDRPlay if it's on one antenna and the transceiver on the other one not so far from it? Most of the switches I can find are aimed at switching antennas not transceivers... I'm trying to find the answer to this before purchasing it ;) BTW: I love your videos and your channel, but your advices to print the whole internet is irking me each time :/ had to say it sorry :D
@davecasler
@davecasler 6 жыл бұрын
Some rx-only antennas have bias-tees that will shut down the antenna's preamp when your rig is transmitting. Usually these are an option. Re printing, I need something printed to really dig into it. I think most studies show that people merely skim through text online.

There are ways to limit voltage, such as back-to-back diodes which will clamp the voltage to a max of 0.7 v peak. But just putting the receive antenna a good 30 to 40 feet from the transmit antenna *should* do the job. Your mileage may vary.

Thank you for time/effort in making your educational videos. This video is first exposure I've had regarding 'Software Defined Radio' stuff, so I have to do a bunch of research and have a LOT to learn yet, because currently I'm clueless about what it is/does...but after looking through the comments below I have a question: Someone below mentioned the "black-box" is able to be burned-up and/or damaged by being too close to a transmitting ant. Does that mean this device and software cannot be attached to the same antenna my transceiver is attached to? I have an FT-450D and a Gap Titan DX vertical...can one of these SDR gadgets be hooked to that antenna and my computer, and still be able to operate the transceiver, or would the SDR gadget require a separate antenna if I wanted to use the FT-450D at the same time? Once I start educating myself about just what this SDR stuff is and does I would probably answer my questions on my own, but your video is first thing I have looked at regarding SDR gadgets, and those questions came to mind after watching it and reading through comments below. Thank you for your time and assistance. Raymond - WF7BSR

You will damage the device if it is connected to the same antenna your transmitter is connected to. However, check out the MFJ-1708B-SDR. It allows you to use your antenna for receiving on your rig and on your SDR, but then disconnects the SDR when you are transmitting. See my video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJTLoYeFm8mdpas

The SDRplay receivers use advanced SDR chip sets from Mirics together with a large array of discrete components to create the multiple band filters. Whether you use our own SDRuno software or popular SDR Console or HDSDR, you will find good reception straight out of the box with no need for any up or down converters. It works well with Windows PCs or Macs running Parallels or similar. Cubic SDR runs directly on Macs and on Raspberry Pi. We provide a downloadable image for this. Linux support is growing. To find out more ask other users what they think by joining the SDRplay Facebook Group or our forum on www.sdrplay.com/community/

Hi Dave! I think I may have finally gone over the edge. I got a HackRF and an Ettus USRP N210. I have no idea how to use either one, whatsoever, but I am pretty good with linux and I am looking forward to having lots of challenges as I get a handle on SDR. I have a question: The AC to DC wall adapter that Ettus sells for the USRP N210 on their website is a 5.9V 4A . Would I get away with using a 6V 4A scooter/boat rechargeable battery? I learned from a little tinkering with the 7.023 MHz CW QRP Pixies that I can clean up the power on a cheap 9 Volt power supply by putting the wire leading up to the DC barrell plug through a circuit with: a 7809 Voltage regulator, a 180 Ohm Resistor, and a 104 pF capacitor. Intuition tells me that a fellow could do that for 6V 4A cheap wall adapters too, to clean up their power noise, but that it would take different value parts in that noise filtering circuit. What do you suppose the values of those 3 parts would be? Thanks Dave! 73 Dave Joe

Antennas are mode-agnostic, meaning they don't care what the underlying mode is. Most FM work is done with vertical polarization. 75 ohm coax can be used, but it may affect the SWR a little.

You confused spectral density (in dBm/Hz) with integrated noise in a specified bandwidth (in dBm) in the video. With a spectral density of -130dBm, the integrated noise in 3KHz would be -130dBm + 10Log(3KHz), or -95dBm. This corresponds to about S5 on a "properly" calibrated S meter. S meters look at total noise in a given bandwidth, not the spectral density. Most receivers are not calibrated according to the standard, with Flex radio being an exception (the Flex radios are essentially accurate spectrum analyzers with signal decoding software).
