If you have a SDRuno receiver, take 15 minutes and watch this video BEFORE you even turn it on. Then keep it handy as you start using the receiver and refer back to it. It is an enormously useful video that will save you a lot of time and frustration!

So glad this has come to my attention. I can't believe this has been available for over a year and I am just now seeing it. This will be very helpful as I learn to use the SDRUno correctly. I had no idea what to do to receive a reasonable signal and this will allow me to learn by doing. Most helpful. Thanks and looking forward to more instruction.

Mike, I enjoyed this video immensely and learned more from it than most all of the others from SDRplay. It answered more of my operational questions and got me going. I am going to search for more videos from this presenter. I just got my SDRplay Radio RSP1a and Uno Software today. I got it all working with your help. I have just gotten re-interested in Radio for Broadcast, SWL and Amateur at age 76. I had a Novice Class and Technician Ham License when I was 13. I learned my Electronics, Communications and Signal Intel in the Army Security Agency from 1964-1968. I also held a 2nd Class Commercial License in the late 1960’s. Thank You Again!

I recently purchased my RSP1a and was extremely excited - only to realize that I was missing out on a lot because I didn't understand the software. Your video is very good and you explain things very well. I would love to see a video that focuses on the VHF spectrum, scanning it and how to log or record results. I live near a military base and would like to use my SDR to monitor military frequencies and record or log results.

Recently purchased the RSPDuo and just getting started with it. Working great! This was a great SDRUno getting started video! Just what I needed. I also VERY MUCH appreciated the mention of the antenna types and directions. There is so much info out there on antennas that it's hard for us noobs to find just what we're looking for. So thank you for that as well. I'm currently running a 200' speaker wire loop stretched out all over my backyard. It's working, but I'm sure there's a better way to do it. But for now, I'm just sticking the ends of the loop into the P and N pins of the High-Z input. Not using the GND pin. I do have a NooElec Balun One Nine. Should I be using it instead of the High-Z input? Lastly, my desire was to listen to the longer wavelength bands in hopes of picking up stuff from Europe. I'm located in Ohio, USA. I've got a lot to learn about picking these kinds of stations out. (I do get loads of Ham traffic from South Carolina and Texas and broadcast stuff from Cuba I believe.) I also do some ADS-B stuff too. But during the daylight hours I would really like to be able to do some P25 trunk tracking, police monitoring. One of the reasons I purchased the Duo was in hopes of being able do it all in the one box, that it included two receivers. Is that something that can be done? Is that coming or is there a place to look to get directions? Thank you again for the videos. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of them! Doug

These have helped me so much to take out a lot of potential frustration in using the UNO ,The fun im having enjoying this unit, brings back memories of Me as a Kid, yes the Old days of short wave radios with Vaccume tubes glowing inside a box, Computers have come so far and this is well worth the cost of stepping up to SDR Radio , My question is in the future will the UNO With dual VFO's , would it be able to do 800 MHz trunking and Also a video on how to configure for a VHF / UHF Repeater Ham scanner..! Please keep those Tutorials going ,its helping very much to get a robust appreciation for this units capabilities

Terrific video - thank you. My RSPdx arrives tomorrow, and I’m excited. Can I ask you a basic question: given such a colossal frequency space to explore - what do you find where? Can you think about a video that does a high level tour that shows what sorts of things you find at what frequencies? Also - you might want to think about not using Acronyms in these introductory videos. You have some instructions at the start that used them and I’ve no idea what you meant! But - thanks again.

First Thank you Mike, it was a great start to my SDRuno. I was a new Ham in 1950's at 15 years old and in Africa.. you know when all you could get was Ex Military sets with "Valves" well here I am again just taking my Ham test again after 69 years, yes you did the maths I'm 84 ish. One question I have so that I can set up my gear! I have a FT-991A and lots of antennas for different bands and I want to figure out a way to be able to use and track stuff on the SDR and then go back and forth to my Transceiver using the same antenna on that particular band. How can I isolate my SDR enough from being "Fried " when I transmit? Is disconnecting the SDR with a switch enough?... Yes an old Fart but I still climb on the roof to install my Antennas!... Thanks for the nice intro. When I opened SDRUNO for the first time I was struggling to find how to close it. In the end I had to kill the windows task to close it. Might be worthwhile to explain how to close it properly. Also, could you please elaborate on how to enter the frequency and fine tune, especially for a laptop that does not have a mouse wheel? How do I fine tune otherwise? Why do I need to hit "M" when entering a frequency and not the "enter" key?

Glad you found this video useful. Closing SDRuno is done via the MAIN panels top right [X] You really want to use a mouse but you can do direct entry by hitting the spacebar and keying in the frequency and hitting M which signifies MHz. You can also use the keyboard shortcuts to move up and down the spectrum Click the MAIN SP and use ARROW UP and ARROW down. It will snap to the step size selected (right click the RX CONTROL frequency readout to change the step size)

And could you please explain the nature of the DC spike which is usually exactly in the center of the shown bandwidth (as I understood it's when LO=VFO). Also it's very interesting how the bandwidth is represented by IQ signals. What is above the LO and what is below the LO. Or may be you know a good link with explanation. Thanks in advance!

My question, since this RSP1 will get the RF input coming from the transciever's IF output at 8.83 MHz it will be necessary any additional device, such as a decoupler, in order to protect the front end of the RSP1 receiver while the transceiver is in TX mode?

Very decent of you you to explain. I have come from a analogue radio with a BFO to RSP1A. I am using the MFJ 1886 RX magnetic loop antenna set about 10 feet above the roofline of my house. Silly question I know but where is the BFO in SDRuno, I am probably looking at it without understanding. Regarding the antenna I use, I know it is a directional antenna, but how directional is it. Seems such a skinny piece of antenna to receive the signal, nothing to do with SDRuno I know by I thought I would ask. I understand the direction of a wire is NE-SW, does that apply to a loop antenna as well. Thanks again for video, I am slowly getting there.

My frustration with the sdruno sofware (after over a year trying to learn it) continues. At about the seven minute mark of the introductory video it refers to 'the sample rate'. @SDRplayHamGuides

Your sample rate is within the MAIN panel using ZERO IF mode. This reads like you In LOW-IF mode. In LOW-IF mode you can't change the sample rate from the fixed sample rate of 2 Mhz. You can only decimate and further reduce that fixed sample rate. Try changing the IF MODE to ZERO IF. imgur.com/OmMZVrv

Antenna's can get technical. You have so many variables which affect the receiving performance. Each location is different and what works well for me at my location might not work well for you at all. I would start with an end fed or a dipole made from speaker wire using a nooelec unun www.amazon.com/NooElec-Balun-One-Nine-Applications/dp/B00R09WHT6 I have tried many receive only antennas in very noisy environments (New York City and Florida). I settled on a loop antenna. Loops can be pricey but work very well in a noisy environment.

@SDRplayHamGuides
@SDRplayHamGuides 3 жыл бұрын
In the zero-IF receiver the analog signal is mixed to baseband and two converters sample the I and Q streams with the signal centered about DC. The difficulty with baseband conversion is that the mixer local oscillator (LO) tone lands at exactly DC, so any bleed-through of the LO through the mixer (which is difficult to prevent) becomes DC in the digital signal. Much or most or maybe all of the DC spike you see is due to the LO bleed-through. In the low-IF system the signal is mixed to a low IF within the supported Nyquist region of the converted signal. The LO still bleeds through to DC, but the signal is digitized at the low-IF (say, the 200kHz in your example). The signal can then be mixed down to baseband digitally, and since there is no bleed-through of the digital mixer, the signal at baseband has no DC due to the bleed-through. The DC component due to the LO bleed-through is simultaneously mixed to -200kHz, so it stays out-of-band of the final desired signal at baseband.
