I too love the more natural/flat sounding mics and wish more people leaned towards them. However, as long as someone is getting decent sound even if it is brighter, I"m a happy camper. I listen to shows recorded with Yetis, to C414's, to U87s, to SM7bs and everything in between. As long as some care is given to the recording, I'm on board.

@@Podcastage i recorded opera vocals in my bedroom and was stunned by how good it sounded compared to my at2035, which gave me unpleasant high frequency buildup (because we have to create resonance in the 3k region to overcome orchestras) and it grated on the ears. However, I get some distortion when singing forte (I don't think I can get to 120db, as I'm a lighter lyric tenor). Engaging the pad would've helped, but I didn't have a tool to move it.

@@wildeocean There isn't much difference between the Lewitt without the air and the SE7 for voiceover. I've been using this type of mic because I can take them anywhere. Rainer - I was also a bit surprised by it. I have never recorded violin so I may be talking out of my rear end, but I think the slightly sibilant/less smooth top end might be not be the most pleasing on the violin. Superb review as always, what a high standard. On electric guitar I thought the sound was painful for leads tho rhythm was passable. Rode M3 sounds way better to me on guitar cabs for a budget small diaphragm condenser. At $700 the Beyer MC930 is so relatively refined sounding, ouch the price but probably difficult to get a bad recording from it.
@Podcastage Жыл бұрын
I agree the Beyer just sounds great. If someone has the budget for them, I see no reason to not go for it, but if you're on a budget the SE7 SE8 and SM81 all give you a kind of similar sound just not quite the same.

@45KevinR Жыл бұрын
Listening on my tablet, no headphones - I noticed that too. Perhaps it was just exceptional in the untreated room. Certainly puts a lie to the "you can't use a condenser in an untreated space". I know little but it seems to have a very small tight cardioid pattern, so maybe that's where the echo rejection comes from.

quick question for you. My 9yo records games, doesnt want to use a mic near his face and moves around some. I've got a small condenser mic that's off to the side and pointing up from below. Is this the best solution? about 1ft to 3ft away. I've never seen you do a review for gaming situations that maybe aren't as controlled, and maybe you could. everyone wants better audio for their video, even at 9 he's complaining about videos with poor audio quality. We use a goXLR mini as the amp because it's easy to control, although the preSonus revelator io24 (great names they come up with) is a recommended replacement.

Yes you are doing the right thing! Next step is teach inghim "mic technique", because mics sound better when you are closer to them!

10:07 Q what is the black thing around the nut/headstock of your electric guitar?
@Podcastage Жыл бұрын
It's a string dampener. These guitars ring if you hit the strings and then mute them. Those dampen that ringing and make the sound cleaner.

sE has won me over. The sE7 sounds nice! Now I shall nitpick. A palate cleanser would be sherbert (or similar) between dinner courses, so within BandrewWorld™, that would be a big Neumann (Hello!) between each mic. I know that ain't happening. Or is it?!
@Podcastage Жыл бұрын
That kind of palate cleanser won't be happening. Maybe palate cleaner is the wrong word, but it's intended to give you a direct back to back comparison of the mics you're comparing.

@coffeehigh420 Жыл бұрын
I worked for one locally.. they like using these pencil-style condenser mics for talent on a boom arm with a shock mount. It gives it that "NPR sound". I've noticed they like to use RE-20's for guest mics. I'm guessing because the condenser picks up so much extra that they need dynamic for any other mics and I hope you'll agree with me, that the RE-20 is one of the most condenser-like sounding mics available for a dynamic microphone?@@Podcastage

Would this be a solid option over a shotgun mic? Particularly the NTG1? I have a sim rig set up and looking to have the mic about 18-24 inches away from me.
@Podcastage Жыл бұрын
I don't think this would work well at 24 inches away unless you have a super dead room with minimal reflective surfaces. But based on the fact that you say it's a simulation rig I'm assuming that it's not designed to be acoustically dead. So this probably wouldn't give you great sound in that type of environment from that distance.
