A long time ago when you worked on Assassins Creed Black Flag, I remember commenting that you have the perfect voice for shanties and that I would love to see you do more. At the time you had said that you had no plans to be doing shantys anytime soon. Imagine my surprise when I check back a few years later only to see you killing it with a brilliant idea. Glad to see you're safe and sound and home again, never forget your old ship mate 💚

Thanks Relevus. I'm glad you like this series. We also put out an album with La Nef (and all of the AC Black Flag singers). Here is the link: music.apple.com/ca/album/sea-songs-shanties/1226708577

This one has a wonderful melancholy, sweet sad feeling that really stays with you. Three years after I first heard it, I still remember the melody.

I've always loved sea shanties, but it makes me so sad because no one I know really likes them. I always find myself singing alone in my room but hey, at least I can have tracks like these to make me feel like there's more people than just me. *Depression intensifies*

Well, I'm really making these videos and releasing the songs to encourage people to sing, either with other people or with me. I hope these can be a positive for you.

Besides the wonderful song, you really make me think about the sailors back then. Even though I am using all the empathy I have I don't think I can fathom how hard it must have been. And lonely if they had to leave their loved ones for a while!

Agreed, it must be impossible to fully understand. We must have comparable feelings and perhaps these songs are one way to related those feelings to the hardships of times gone by.

This kind of reminds me of “Low Lands” MY FAVORITE shanty... my brother and would sing it in the car on road trips with our dad singing it in three part harmony on the verses. I would sing the verses because I knew the song from Black-flag. Sean you are amazing and I am glad I found you and your content!
@SeanDagher4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like fun car trips. Nils sang Lowlands on Black Flag and on our album with La Nef: music.apple.com/ca/album/sea-songs-shanties/1226708577 I'm going to try to get Nils on as a special guest soon.

@@jakem7598 Whoa, flashback! Thanks Jake. I will one day soon-ish start a side series of non-shanty songs of the week. I love Anachie Gordon and I learned it wrong from someone who learned it from Loreena McKennit, who sings Nic Jones' version of the original ballad, which is called Auchanachie Gordon. I love that new versions get created by every singer along the way.

Yeah, Spotify won't deal with artists directly. I'd have to get on through a label. Bandcamp (seandagher.bandcamp.com) has the tunes up and they treat artist VERY fairly, especially compared to Spotify.

Thanks for your kind words. As to your question, it would perhaps be unwise of me to admit to anything that might jeopardize my reputation as an upstanding and sober member of the music community. Suffice it to say that my vocal technique is based on equal parts Guinness and whiskey.
