Thanks, Sean! I'm a sailor aboard a modern-day man-o-war, and your fantastic songs are inspiring. A day may come when classic sea shanties are not sung anymore, but it won't happen on my watch. Roll tide and roll Alabama, roll!

Technically speaking man-o-wars didn't have sea shanties. Military ships were actually quite quiet as it was believed by officers that singing would get in the way of hearing orders. So military ships didn't have sea shanties as a general rule.

This arrangement has major "person who's worked the midnight shift at a sailors' tavern for too long and has resigned themselves to the fact that most of their customers are probably ghosts from sunken whaling ships but nobody believes them so they just deal with it" vibes

The Weller Brothers’ company was a line of ships that supplied whalers on long voyages, apparently bringing such items as sugar, tea, and rum, in addition to food and water. “Tonguing” means cutting whale blubber into strips to be rendered into oil, a job which came with a distinctly horrible smell, as it could take days to tongue an entire whale, so it might begin rotting before it is processed. They also kept other parts of the whale; whalebone, for example, was useful in making tools, and certain valuable oils are present in the brain, if I recall correctly. I’ve heard it said that one of the Weller brothers, Joseph, died abroad, and his body was sent back to Australia in a barrel of rum, much like Nelson’s. Merry Christmas, Seán, and happy new year.

Cool rendition, it has a grim and mysterious feel to it. Usually, this song sounds like "look at us brave wellermen fighting at sea for ages, we won't sleep before we get that whale", but this version sounds much more like the voyage is doomed but the crew goes along with it anyway.
