Fathers' Day shore fishing from Freshwater Beach Holiday Park, Dorset, UK. It was a sunny day with an inshore wind and some weed was visible. I decided to fish in honour of a good friend Nigel who sadly passed away in April 2024. We had fished this beach together many times. RIP Nigel my good friend.
I started fishing at 2:00pm and within 10 minutes I had my first rod rattle but I didn't catch, it was either weed or a fish had spat the bait and hook out. Although there was weed about it wasn't blanket weed so although it was annoying at times, the sea was still fishable. The sea was tumbling with moderate waves which made it look like there could be Sea Bass about. I kept that in mind but didn't want to jinx it by saying so at the beginning of the video. Sea Bass like it when the there are tumbling waves as it disorientated the smaller fish and as Sea Bass are a predatory fish, this makes it good fishing for the Sea Bass themselves. After the second rattle on the rod, I picked up my rod and could feel a fish for sure but again it spat the hook and I didn't catch however, this was a great indication to me that there were fish out there on the feed and so my expectations of catching a fish or two increased.
After refining my fishing tackle to cope with the conditions I was feeling rather confident of catching fish. Not long after I had started fishing (around 20 minutes) I caught my first fish of the day, a Dogfish, I was well chuffed as it proved my theory that fish were out there and feeding. I love shore fishing and how it makes you think about every move you make in regards the tackle, bait, distance etc. I continued using medium to large fish baits in the hope that something large was out there, for example a Sea Bass. I kept the hook size to a modest 1/0 size and tried my best to achieve a decent casting distance but the inshore wind was preventing me casting any further than 70 meters.
I went on to catch 4 Dogfish and each one was getting bigger in size however, all I kept thinking to myself was, "I must fish through the Dogfish to get to something bigger and better" And boy did I come up trumps and WIN. A cracking bite came along and the battle began. I wasn't sure if it was another larger Dogfish or maybe more weed together a smaller fish until a felt the fight. I was quietly confident that I had a better fish on as I was battling to bring it in. After reeling in and I was roughly about 30-40 meters by now, the line suddenly went slack and I thought I had lost the fish. Then all of a sudden, the fish was fighting hard in the surf and it felt heavy. Eventually I had successfully landed a beautiful Sea Bass. The Sea Bass measured 61cm (24 inches) and was quite chunky around the belly. My scales hadn't been used for quite a while and when I went to use them, they had rotted inside the battery compartment and was broken for good. The Sea Bass had a lice on it's tail and so my first job was to remove the lice that sucking away at the Sea Bass's tail. I was overwhelmed at catching this amazing Sea Bass especially as I was fishing in honour of Nigel. What a great afternoons fishing and thankfully it was caught on camera for all to see and enjoy.
I hope enjoy watching this video.
Best wishes!
Rob.
