According to Gerald Moore, this setting of Masefield was considered by Ireland to be his finest song. The rhythm and phrasing is particularly sensitive to the meter of Masefield's poem and the melody is in turns robust and wistful. Mr Russell, I know you are a music teacher and I am but a student. This is an important song in the British repertoire and we need good example. Would you consider doing this again but with more (tighter) legato? AEPK

So good of you to reply so promptly. I like your rendition but, having been castigated regularly for an insufficiently smooth line, I am rather sensitive to the subject. In my opinion, although Thomas Allen sings the piece with superb legato his KZbin rendition lacks mood. Your commitment and his line would be just perfect. If you are willing to "redo" your posting, I think you will attract students, like me, looking for the best version to learn from and emulate. Many thanks.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I could do it again and differently - because every time is different in some way or another, and I always respond differently depending on my mood and energy. Was it the vocal part, or the piano part that you feel should have more line?

Yes, I take your point. All those things. Perhaps I should have referred to "preference" rather than what is "best'. And, I think it depends on what one is trying to achieve. Right now I'm trying to improve my presentation. The advent of KZbin provides a great opportunity to analyze various approaches and choose amongst them. Thanks for your interest. Aodan

Thank you. I don't really believe in the idea of the 'best version' myself. There are song interpretations that communicate to some people and not others. There are a hundred small decisions of interpretation in a three minute song relating to tempo, rubato, phrasing, line, dynamics. No two singers will take it the same way. I like singers who make their own way with a song, if they are sensitive to the lyric and respectful of the composer's intention. To create the 'best' version is not my aim.
