My kids and I love collecting treasures from the beach and we have a lot of Seaglass and seashells that we have kept in Mason jars because we haven’t really thought of what else to do with them. I found a beautiful window and thought it would be a great idea to show them off better than in a mason jar but didn’t know what glue to use so your video is very informative. Thank you so much

Hi, I have JUST started into this... I NEVER knew that sea glass was just broken bottles and other glass items that have been in the sea .. that the shapes, the smoothness comes from years of being rolled about in the water and the sand.. I felt soo dumb when I found out what it was exactly... all of that being said... Do you just walk the beach and look for it? I do not live far from Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra. So I was wondering where ppl get it from. Like looking for sharks' teeth? You just look and hope you find it?

I have not worked with sea glass and now have an interest in doing so. I have also been trying to figure out a way to put 1" clear glass tiles in a window in a jacuzzi area. I wonder if the silicone could be used in this way and type of space. Do you have thoughts about this application? Or, I may turn to sea glass and still question if silicone is a stable choice for a jacuzzi area. Thank you so much for any information you might provide, Jackie!
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 5 жыл бұрын
Silicone is a great choice for a jacuzzi area. It's meant for bath and kitchen use so it holds up good in moisture. I do complete my mosaics on a table so the pieces don't slip out of place before setting. I don't hang the mosaic until the pieces have set. SO you may have some difficulties if you try to attach the pieces in a window standing up. Good luck with your project.

Hi Jackie, I hope you dont mind me asking you here. My daughter and I have been wanting to make a mosaic like yours on glass, but I cannot work out which glue/sealant/caulk to use. We are based in the UK, and I cannot get hold of the product that you use. I wonder if you could tell me, is the product you use just a silicone sealant, or a caulk/adhesive? Thank you so much for your help in advance! Tim
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can! I've had the best luck with caulk adhesive. I find sealant much messier to work with although it will still work. Just be sure to purchase one that says "clear" or "dries clear" on it. I prefer ones that go on white and then dry clear. But they all work. I also go for ones that don't have odor.

Do you think the silicone would work well if I’m gluing on a vertical window? Im thinking I’ll want the E6000 for a faster dry, but I’d prefer the lesser odor too. I’m gluing larger pieces too. Flat stones that have translucent effects.
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 8 ай бұрын
It will work but you have to tape the pieces on until they set or they will slip. You can insert little tile separators and then remove them later. Start from the bottom and work your way up leaving a few days between each layer. It works better if you can lay your window flat to set. Warning about E6000. It does yellow and dry out and fall off over time. OK for a project you don’t want to last for a long time. But with silicone it will hold for years. And it won’t yellow and fall off. Good luck.

I see that you clean the wet silicone with a toothpick, but that still leaves a smear. How do you clean silicone smears from the glass when done with the project? I am having a terrible time with that. I am not covering all the glass the way you are and the silicone smears look terrible. I cannot find anything to clean them off.
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe try using less silicone so you have less oozing out from behind the piece of sea glass. I use wooden toothpicks and BBQ skewers with differing thickness depending on how much silicone I have to clean off. I don't like the smear look so I'm pretty picky about cleaning it all off. I work fairly slow to make sure it looks good.

If you need old windows, ask your local contractors/handymen. They throw them out when they replace with new. And often have to pay a fee to dispose of them, so they should be giving them to you for free. Just understand that some older windows probably have lead paint on the frames and work accordingly if you'd planned on sanding and repainting.

Do you think you could use the same glue for glueing stain glass to a window?
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 9 ай бұрын
I’m sure it would work well. You would see it clearer through the thin clear glass than through thick frosted sea glass. You could try to cover the whole bottom of each piece to reduce this effect. I’d try a small sample piece first to see if you like the effect.

The silicone works great on canvas. I’ve only done a few sea glass embellishments and not full mosaics as I prefer the look of sea glass on glass - for some reason it shines better.

Thanks for sharing your tips. Your artwork is immaculate!! You must have an extensive seaglass collection! Don’t suppose you’d be willing to tell where you hunt the glass? I have a nice spot here in Corpus Christi but it’s sadly running dry.

Have you ever tried clear Elmer's glue? Does it work well? I'm using glass tiles (not sea glass) on a window. I'm also thinking of using grout. Haven't finished the design stage yet.
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 4 жыл бұрын
Glass tiles would be beautiful on glass. I can’t comment on the use of grout on glass. I’ve never tried it. I’d recommend against elmers glue or any glue product. My experience is that they all eventually dry up and the pieces fall off. Even e6000 and epoxy. It’s so disappointing after all that work. Stuck with clear silicone.

My experience with glue is that it dries out over time as I hang my mosaics in Windows and they are exposed to light and heat. It’s so disappointing when the pieces fall off. This doesn’t happen with silicone.

Hi I just discovered your video because i have been trying to figure out what glue works best as i have been wanting to try this. I love it! Thanks so much for the info! I do have a question though. Do you pour silicone or epoxy over the entire stained glass to make a smooth surface or is it finished after it is dry? I know you said it yellows over time. Just wondering if it needs to be sealed afterward.

Thanks for the great info. Do you think that one of these windows would work for an outdoor shower Enclosure that I am building? Would you glue the sea glass on and then put a layer of UV epoxy over it?
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 4 жыл бұрын
I love this idea. Keep in mind that you can still see through it, so privacy may be an issue. In my climate, the conditions are harsh so I've never tried leaving a piece outside full time, so I can't comment on how it would hold out. I've not used UV epoxy over a piece, as I prefer not to cover the sea glass with any product - it takes away the frostiness. I have tried epoxy for gluing the sea glass on and it does dry out and the pieces fall off over time. Good luck

Hi Jackie, beautiful work. I have heard that you should pour a clear epoxy or resin over the pane after the entire design is glued down. What do you recommend? Also, if the design is not so full or the pane is not completely covered in sea glass, gem stone, or colored broken glass pieces, what fills it in with a crackled/iced/slightly frosted look. Debbie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Debbie, I don’t pour anything over the seaglass. Once it’s glued on it’s done for me. To cover it would take away the frosted sea glass look. Some people do cover theirs but I can’t comment on what they use. It’s a personal preference.

Hello Jackie: When I use transparent silicone in order to glue the sea glass to a normal glass, one can see some kind of "stain" after it hardens. In other words, one can perfectly see where the silicone is when the light passes through it. Do you use any special type of silicone or glue to avoid this?
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 5 жыл бұрын
Delcopond I use silicone that goes on white and dries clear. I did find when I was using various glues they always left a stain but I’ve never had that issue with silicone. You can see it as it is a clear substance beneath the glass and you can see through glass but it is clear. Maybe the product you’re using has something in it. I have a link in the description here to a product that has worked great for me. Good luck.
