Hi, I have JUST started into this... I NEVER knew that sea glass was just broken bottles and other glass items that have been in the sea .. that the shapes, the smoothness comes from years of being rolled about in the water and the sand.. I felt soo dumb when I found out what it was exactly... all of that being said... Do you just walk the beach and look for it? I do not live far from Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra. I wonder if the silicone could be used in this way and type of space. Do you have thoughts about this application? Or, I may turn to sea glass and still question if silicone is a stable choice for a jacuzzi area. Thank you so much for any information you might provide, Jackie!
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie5 жыл бұрын
Silicone is a great choice for a jacuzzi area. It's meant for bath and kitchen use so it holds up good in moisture. I do complete my mosaics on a table so the pieces don't slip out of place before setting. I don't hang the mosaic until the pieces have set. SO you may have some difficulties if you try to attach the pieces in a window standing up. Good luck with your project.

Yes you can! I've had the best luck with caulk adhesive. I find sealant much messier to work with although it will still work. Just be sure to purchase one that says "clear" or "dries clear" on it. Do you think the silicone would work well if I’m gluing on a vertical window? Im thinking I’ll want the E6000 for a faster dry, but I’d prefer the lesser odor too. I’m gluing larger pieces too. Flat stones that have translucent effects.
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie8 ай бұрын
It will work but you have to tape the pieces on until they set or they will slip. You can insert little tile separators and then remove them later. Start from the bottom and work your way up leaving a few days between each layer. It works better if you can lay your window flat to set. Warning about E6000. It does yellow and dry out and fall off over time. OK for a project you don’t want to last for a long time. But with silicone it will hold for years. And it won’t yellow and fall off. Good luck.

I am having a terrible time with that. I am not covering all the glass the way you are and the silicone smears look terrible. I cannot find anything to clean them off.
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie3 жыл бұрын
Maybe try using less silicone so you have less oozing out from behind the piece of sea glass. I use wooden toothpicks and BBQ skewers with differing thickness depending on how much silicone I have to clean off. I don't like the smear look so I'm pretty picky about cleaning it all off. I work fairly slow to make sure it looks good.

If you need old windows, ask your local contractors/handymen. They throw them out when they replace with new. Just understand that some older windows probably have lead paint on the frames and work accordingly if you'd planned on sanding and repainting.

I love this idea. Keep in mind that you can still see through it, so privacy may be an issue. In my climate, the conditions are harsh so I've never tried leaving a piece outside full time, so I can't comment on how it would hold out. I've not used UV epoxy over a piece, as I prefer not to cover the sea glass with any product - it takes away the frostiness. I have tried epoxy for gluing the sea glass on and it does dry out and the pieces fall off over time. Good luck

Hi Jackie, beautiful work. I have heard that you should pour a clear epoxy or resin over the pane after the entire design is glued down. What do you recommend? Also, if the design is not so full or the pane is not completely covered in sea glass, gem stone, or colored broken glass pieces, what fills it in with a crackled/iced/slightly frosted look. Debbie

Thanks Debbie, I don’t pour anything over the seaglass. Once it’s glued on it’s done for me. To cover it would take away the frosted sea glass look. Some people do cover theirs but I can’t comment on what they use. It’s a personal preference.

Love this* can you share how you hang your pieces?
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie6 жыл бұрын
I use some different techniques for hanging. I plan to do a video to give more detail on different approaches. Mostly I use hanging hardware and picture wire and hang from cup hooks attached to the inside of a window frame.

Jackie, thank you for your video. How do you make the water/ocean like background on glass? It looks like melted glass but I don't how a clue as to how to make that before I apply the pieces of sea glass.
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie6 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne, the background is done much the same with many pieces of sea glass. If you check out the series I have just posted on creating a flower bed it will show you all the steps to do the main design and the background. Have fun

Hello Jackie: When I use transparent silicone in order to glue the sea glass to a normal glass, one can see some kind of "stain" after it hardens. In other words, one can perfectly see where the silicone is when the light passes through it. Do you use any special type of silicone or glue to avoid this?
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie5 жыл бұрын
Delcopond I use silicone that goes on white and dries clear. I did find when I was using various glues they always left a stain but I’ve never had that issue with silicone. You can see it as it is a clear substance beneath the glass and you can see through glass but it is clear. Maybe the product you’re using has something in it. I have a link in the description here to a product that has worked great for me. Good luck.
