Man, I used to have all three of those sets when they first came out. I'd love to have them again but they're stupid expensive these days. I wish they'd release some interesting tanks like these again!

The Gold stuff is not paint, it's a process called vacuum plating and over time does break down however being essentialy a plastic rather than actual metal foil it's no danger to the pets. With plastics and especially clear acrylic do not subject them to heat (unless it's something marked as a thermoplastic), you're quite lucky the tank itself didn't crack as normally what happens is the heat causes expansion past the plastics natural flex point and stress cracks form, with the buildings you are right, hot air in one expanded and made it balloon out, the other probably was able to release the air and a vaccuum formed pulling the now pliable plastic in. I would say don't scrap it, you could turn it into a diaster tank, attack of the 50ft Sea Monkey perhaps.

dont boil plastic ,it gets soft at 165⁰f- 220⁰f
