Someone in that factory was a genius. They took all the tiny bits of the plastic from making the tanks that would have been thrown out and sold a spoonful of trash for $1.00 ($.50s/h) because they called them “Sea Diamonds”.

You know, I’ve always wondered... what if the intent with Sea Diamonds was that, after sinking, they’d stay for a while and grow a light coating of aquarium floor algae? Then, in a few weeks, the water would evaporate, suspending little bits of food-covered particulate in the tank for sea monkeys to try and “burrow” at, which they sometimes do when there’s not enough suspended microalgae in the water. I wonder if a smarter modern approach like a neutrally buoyant algae-covered tetherball would capture the imagination of sea monkeys “playing” with their environment.
@Boredchinchilla

I think it was just a way to sell some of the plastic waste leftover from molding the tanks. It looks a lot like the plastic pieces that hold model car or plane parts together in a sheet in the box, which would occur when molding the sea monkey products as well.

This is the first Picocosmos video I watched (back when it was uploaded under your first channel name, btw). But this wasn't my first kit. It was more like my 20th. And I was SO disappointed by the "Sea Diamonds" - something I'd been curious about for years, due to the fanciful description in the old manuals. These shapeless bits of dull plastic were nothing like a diamond or cut gem, which I was expecting, & my sea-monkeys didn't cavort or interact in any way with them. This was the first sea-monkey product I threw away in anger, actually. And this coming from someone who (back in the fifth grade!) somehow got over the discovery that sea-monkeys themselves are nothing like their promotional illustrations. The fun of hatching & raising them is something I can't explain, but totally buy into, whereas these "Sea Diamonds" really bothered me, & I didn't like the feeling that I'd been scammed. However, I did like the unusual day-glo tank, so it wasn't a complete loss. Sorry for the rant, I just really couldn't justify marketing which was THAT misleading. Still love sea-monkeys to this day, though. And this awesome channel!

I was absolutely terrified of SeaMonkeys for several years haha. The box art promising these strange humanoid sea creatures that could come out and interact with you gave me chills. I remember a box having a picture of a real child with a SeaMonkey sitting on their shoulder. 😂 But when I was about 10 or 11 years old this was my first and only SeaMonkey kit I ever owned. I foolishly took it to school one day and a girl in my class picked them up, tipped them over, and spilled half of the contents on to the floor. I was devastated and am still salty about it more than 20 years later lol 😂 thanks to your channel I am treating myself to another chance to keep SeaMonkeys.

I still have my big yellow handbook too, I have a box of sea monkey stuff, thats where I had found my old packets, Im not sure exactly how old they are, but I think around at least 15-20 years. Possibly more, I don't remember if I had brought them with me from my old house or bought them while living in this one. i do know I had ordered them though I think through the mail by using the ordering instructions on the back and the copyright date on the back of the packets was 1979, I know they aren't that old, at least i don't think so but who knows. Anyways I have counted 3 so far from the old eggs, when they get big enough I am going to add them to my half gallon tank. It will be interesting to see if the newer ones get bigger. I might leave them in the ocean zoo till they are full adult to see if these old timers are the same size or not.

Hi there! In a previous video, you made mention of adding in crushed up eggshells into tanks that needs more calcium for Sea Monkey growth, and I was just curious: Is there a safety disinfection process you go through, like boiling to get rid of access bacteria the eggshells before crushing them up putting them in the tank, or should the eggshells be left alone other then crushing them? Also, should they be collected from just a raw egg, or from a boiled egg prior to crushing? Thank you very much for all your time, as well as for putting out all these fun, educational videos! :)

@@pico-cosmos to be completely honest, idk how it happened. All of them died out after 2 years but I just kept the tank there and in about a month there were babies. Although, I feel like this isn’t sustainable. The gene pool doesn’t get any variation. I have no food. I heard you can feed them yeast. I tried some boiled egg yolk and I guess it helped cause a lot grew up. Always wanted to make a really nice tank for them though. Anyways, pretty awesome you made a channel for sea monkeys. You had passion, and just went for it. And your channel is getting pretty well put together. If sea monkey videos start to get stagnant, there’s a few other “instant life” pets. Trilobites. My expectations were SO HIGH... Now, as an adult, I found NeoCaridina Dwarf Shrimp... and I couldn't be happier. It's not as easy as the Sea Monkeys... but it's not that much harder either. I even think it would be cool to use the Neo shrimp in the Sea People City Scapes. Lol I’ve heard a few people complain that their Sea-Monkeys smell. It’s not something I’ve ever noticed with mine. Maybe I’m just nose-blind to it though and all my visitors think my house wreaks 😂

I guess the "sea diamonds" are good for them as a substrate to filter the poop to the bottom, and surface area for algea to grow on? I guess?

I had a set exactly like this growing up in the mid-to-late 2000s. Did any Ocean Zoo sets come in this colour and also come with Sea Diamonds?
