That's cool, but I like a bit of progress in my games - something to work toward and maintain. Most people do, too, I'd say given how prevalent RPG mechanics have become in modern games. It would be cool to find a middle ground.

@Jusey1 Sea of Thieves doesn't do progression well at all. If you're going to have progression that purely involves elements that don't pertain to gameplay, you have to have a wide-variety of skills a player can master, and a wide variety of cosmetic items/personalization a player can obtain. Sea of Thieves does neither of these well.

the problem with expanding the map is that for server stability there's a 6-ship limit per instance. the more they expand the map, the emptier the game will feel. you can already go hours without seeing a single other player. what they need to do is split the regions into separate maps, and let the player pick which they want to play. these smaller maps would force players closer together, resulting in the game being more fun.

Well it is a review so yes it's correct that the game does a poor job at a tutorial, but it's up to the potential SoT owner that's watching this video to determine if they think a lack of tutorial is a problem or not for that individual

I whole heartily disagree with the closing statements. There is no character progression because it keeps an even playing field for those that are new or veteran players. Instead, progression is gained in play experience of knowing how to play better and secret advantages

​@@riverdweller3208 It's similar to why people play competitive esports. You don't "gain" equipment that makes you better in CS:GO or Rocket League, but you do gain skill. The fun is in the gameplay, not in what you earn. The gameplay becomes more fun the better you get. No-one says "Rocket League is bad because you can't earn faster cars." The only reason people say this about SoT is that it's probably the only PvPvE that focuses solely on gameplay and not on loot/leveling up. The point is to have fun.

There are ways to introduce progression without a hard stat increase. We could earn new weapons that behave differently (like a bow). They could introduce perks like not losing speed when carrying treasure, upgrade ship item capacity, etc. I could go on forever.

Fyi Ign did a poor job of reviewing this game imo. It is a great game and it has concepts that may not apply to everyone but they described these things like the stagnant weapons (which are not) as objectively negative. Where many see it as a positive. (New weapons have and are being added). So if this review is what still puts you off talk to people who play the game and didnt pick it up for an hour to assume the vision rare had for this game

I think ign really missed the point when they talked about the progression system in the game: You don’t earn a bigger ship with more guns. Nor do you earn more powerful weapons or practical advantages. But you do earn experience, you earn stories and you earn skill. Put it this way, if I saw a ship decked out in athena’s gear I would turn tail and run, even though I know we’ve both got the exact same equipment. It’s the idea of a more skilled crew, not a better equipped crew, that really matters in this game. If you think this game is stagnant in its progression, then I suppose you yourself haven’t progressed in playing it.

We have recently been introduced to this game and have been playing it most every night for weeks. This post states that without "powering up" or the islands and seascape never changes is it's down side and can get old quickly. We had to shake our heads in astonished "what is he talking about"? As noted, this is new to our crew, however the amount of islands there are if feels like we have barely licked the iceberg and haven't seen the tip yet. And what islands we've been sent to a couple of times, each visit is a completely new experience. Also to mention as of Feb20 there seems to be new islands, or islands that have changed. There are so many random events and surprise attacks by skeletons and monsters, along with being weary if you see someone else's boat near by. We've been suddenly killed and sunk, our boat stolen, a ghost or skeleton ship emerge next to us looking to destroy us. (And they don't give up). If you are looking for a 15 min match, or to become level 95 elf with blue eyes, that is another game. This game is a weekend road trip with some friends that you pack the trunk in 15 mins and decide what you want to do on the way.

I found it a relief to have everything useful unlocked at the very start. There was no underlying feeling that I should grind this and that before I could start enjoying the game. I'm playing for three months, and I still feel progression by learning new tricks, mastering old ones and combining the learned strengths of my crew(s). It was pure, undisturbed joy all along. I don't miss a ticking xp bar.

Yeah the no progression for stats and stuff is exactly what makes the game great. Its fair for everyone - every single time. So you can play a month every day or play 3 times a year. You still have fun and you still got a chance against others. Of course players who play more often are better, but they are not better because of better weapons or ships and you learn from your mistakes. Sadly i play solo most of the time.. so i'm really bad at pvp. 😅

MrSirjohny Yes but that’s part of what makes it different. What makes it much more enjoyable is that skill, teamwork, and strategy are the strongest tools. What I’d love to see is progression in the PvE area maybe two or three different enemies that are like the kraken and skeleton ships that you can get things like charms for to better fight them.

This game is a true work of art and I've enjoyed every moment sailing solo and with friends. Rare is one of the few developers who is actually willing to try something that's totally unique compared to all the over-hyped games on the market today. I think this game has evolved very well despite all the criticism it's received since it launched and can't wait to see the future.

The strength of this game is in the journey not the destination. Having been a player since beta, and watching the devs tirelessly put out new, free content and listening to player feedback, I can wholeheartedly say its one of the best co-op experiences out there. I disagree with the review that it is a weakness not to have power based progression. They are missing the whole point of the game itself, its about story making with other people, whether that be through the tall tale or pvp content. The lack of power progression means new players are engaging with the world, with the same tools as longtime ones and keeps the seas open; unlike other sandbox games where experience and time committed is king. Its not the rewards that keep you coming back, but the stories and experiences you make with other people that keep the game feeling worthwhile.

Well, i started playing when it was released and i can say it was the most boring mp game i ever played. Even with 3 friends i felt like i was wasting my time being bored. Fetch quest after fetch quest after fetch quest and in between being sunk by players being much better at shooting, as every kind of fighting mechanic is super-basic and bland. No tactic, no strategy, simple pure one dimensional hit or be hit. And the only interaction with players beside your ship being incentiviced by the game is PvP. PvE is even worse: A handful of enemies, killed by the same two mechanics: one melee and two ranged? And those skeletons got boring after 10 minutes. And there is no alternative. There is only one role to play: Standard Pirate. No way to customize the game to your taste, no way to find "your" way to play. Everything about this game is simply one dimensional, no depth. Seriously, from a pure gameplay mechanic point of view this game is merely a student project. Gave up after about a week of trying to have fun.

It really does do that. The game is designed around trying to keep you playing by spawning interesting things nearby. You just need to set a hard time limit and go turn in loot a little before time's up.

I like that the progression is cosmetic only, it gives everyone a level playing field. Mastering the complexities of ship and hand to hand combat is far more rewarding than being given weapons or ships that are directly more powerful.

No level ups means everyone is equal. That is a positive thing. When you become pirate legend you've seen and done enough to be a better player without the game giving you handouts.

That aspect of the game is always overlooked. This is a game where an experienced player with a lot of knowledge of how the world and game works, will have a huge advantage over newer players. In that way you will often beat more mechanically skilled players, and at the same time it won't make new players feel unwelcome into the world because everyone has obvious advantage with bigger ships/cannons/weapons. This is something that has always been there. People who complain about power progression are judging the game from the surface because they haven't played enough to understand it. And honestly, i think that raw power advantage in PvP games is fundamentally a really bad idea anyway.

You are all forgetting that this games biggest asset is the community and it is most fun when you play with others, talk to others, and make some lasting friends. This game has one of the best community's tough can find. Believe me, I have put 60+ hours into this game and probably 90+ hours and it was the game I played the most in the game pass and I am still playing the game almost daily.

I love how you dont have to buy new weapons, it makes every fight based off of your own skill, preparation, and coordination, so you dont feel like you get cheated by someone who has been playing for a long time and has the super OP Pirate Legend 1 shot pistol. There has never been a game that has so consistently made every sunken ship feel like my own fault as Sea of Thieves, it makes it more open to new players, while still having veteran players at a slight advantage because of their skills and preparation, you will never feel like you lost because the enemy had better weapons, its all skill based and preparation based. As I said, when I lose to a gunpowder barrel, I dont think "Oh come on they bought a gunpowder barrel" I think "Awww, they had a Gunpowder barrel" which sounds the same but finding one by random chance makes it feel so much more rewarding when you realize "If I didn't have that Gunpowder barrel, we probs would have lost"

I absolutely love this game. I moved away from my home and friends in Florida and this game is what kept my friendship alive with one of my friends. With him in Florida and me in New Jersey video games are the only way that we can really do anything together.

I have played this game since release, Sailed 9 million virtual miles and I have had some of the best times on Sea Of Thieves than any game I have played, there is so much to do and so much freedom within the game which is what makes it so amazing. I would recommend anyone to play the game and give it a try until atleast 30 rep in all then give your review on the game it has a slow start but once you've got the hold on what you're doing you will have a blast.

One of the major things that needs an overhaul is the character customization. It is limited and most characters are hard to look at. I spent a solid 10 minutes selecting my character. This is a pirate game. YOU should decide what YOUR pirate looks like. Really hope this changes in the future.

I don't understand why so many people still call this game trash. If it doesn't suit your taste, okay, you can look at it that way and say so. The developers put so much love into the game. Starting with the 12 Tall Tales (story mode), absolutely fun and massive - each one takes at least 1-2 hours on the first run. A dedicated PvP mode called The Arena (although there is room for improvement, especially for competitive play). Regular free updates, patches and hotfixes. They have already released over 20 themed updates, each one with it's own core mechanic that are still in the game. For example we got Skeleton ships, fog, thunder storms, a huge new volcanic area calles Devils Roar or open world PvP enhancing elements like the Reaper Chest. So far no content hidden behind a paywall (except cosmetics like pets) and no DLC/expansion in sight. Until recently, there were weekly devlogs on KZbin that give you the feeling that the community is being listened to. Which team offers something like that? Just today I wanted to play a bit of Apex Legends with friends and what happend? We were (once again) not able to play. Matchmaking and game servers are overloaded for days. On Reddit all criticism is deleted and on Twitter they don't say anything about the server problems. Guys, think about what games/devs you call trash.

neat review but you skipped over their concept of in-session progression. while your move set stays the same, the longer your session is, the more powerful you get. you can find gunpowder barrels, cursed cannonballs, and more deadly projectiles to lob at your enemies while gathering supplies, ensuring that you’ll win any battle.

Played this game for over 1000 hours with 1-3 friends and i still enjoy playing it once or twice a week. If you get bored quick in this game, you either dont have the right friends to play it with or this game is just not for you. The game really doenst need constant action and it thrives during its calm and chill moments between missions or after a big pvp fight. Everytime i play, i experience different things, different situations or meet different players and i have never felt like i am in the exact same situation as ive been before. Really recommend this game, but only if you have a friend or more to play it with regularly

They need to make it more sandbox. Base building and crafting. Somehow work making your own treasure maps in. Instead of easily finding it and turning it in. Maybe have a limit you must reach before turning it in. So until then you must bury it and it automatically becomes a quest anyone can go look for. Kinda forces more interaction. Bigger map and maybe large islands with deep rivers and streams for rowboats to navigate.

Actually you can find were to find tall tales in your reputation tab under each tall tales name. Also island do change. Rare puts new things on islands over time to tease upcoming updates. Like the reapers hideout was completely abandoned with nothing built on it this time last year.

People have a hard time accepting the idea that it's not even trying to be a campaign story game or a progression game. They still want to compare it with those because gaming for them has certain strict definitions. As a tabletop RPG gamer, I can appreciate sea of thieves for what it's trying to do, which is to be a game you don't finish, or beat, or complete. It's a party game, where you get a few friends together and make a night of it. Like D&D, there's no win condition, or even endgame. You're playing strictly for fun, because nothing else really matters.

I wouldn’t be mad if they had something like perks in this game. Every 5 levels you got in an alliance would give you a perk point for that alliance. You could spend it on lower level perks or save up for higher level perks. The perks wouldn’t be huge advantages but would give the player a sense of progress. For the gold hoarders, maybe one of the perks makes the radius for the X marks the spot larger, making them easier to dig up. For the order of souls, maybe you would be able to kill skeletons easier, the hunters call you could get 30% more fish biting. The merchants would give you an ability on a ten minute cooldown that lets you put the wind in the direction of your sails.

I used to play this game a lot with my best friend. It was our go to game to grab some drinks and just relax and have fun, raiding kids struggling to sail the galleon, fishing and grinding reps. But when they introduced the fire mechanics it ruined the game for us. Suddenly, it turned the game into a chaotic experience.

In only a few hours of playing the this game with a crew of 2, I feel like there is nothing else to do. Everything in the game feels meaningless and there is basically no reason to level up mercenaries. Every voyage is just go to point B, collect loot, return to point A and sell loot. Playing shanties is probably the most "fun" you can have. It is a shame as the game has massive potential to be playable if it wasn't completely empty with purpose.

The balancing on this game and half assed updates killed it. I got attacked by the "rare" kraken 4 times in one day on 2 different occasions. Plus the fact the fight is boring and the loot turned up is poor. I never want to see it again. After the kraken kill commendations are done its a huge waste of time

Its a great game, some of my fondest gaming moments have been in the seas, the tall tales, comendations and customizing make an incredible game and the true charm is in its moment to moment player interactions, the tension of seeing a galleon on the horizon is exhilarating, but my biggest complaint is how the game's main proggresion is based on repetition, doing comendations dont do nothing for that coveted legend status, and it does get stagnant specially when you reach the level 40 mark were progression is just torture and you end up thinking " i could be doing tall tales, pirating, exploring doing anything but the same "go to outpost, pick up voyage, go to island, dig up/hand in/ kill, go to outpost". And while there is no feeling quite like having a deck full of maybe 20 chests and seeing a ship turn to your direction, after the 700th time is just, boring. Honestly if my trusty crew was not there to sing along and fight to the last mango i would have probably dropped this game long ago. The raw potential this game has is something i havent seen in a long time, and i plan to be there for the journey, heck i still wear my "Brave vanguard" title with pride.

The thing is that you don't _have_ to focus on that, it's only yourself that pushes you to. If want to play the Tall Tales or explore the world instead of leveling up the factions, then you can, and you'll get some random things that give you faction levels anyways along the way. If you force yourself to focus on the voyages, then of course that part won't be enjoyable, they were built as background forces to drive ships from island to island with treasure, nothing more.
