Sea Star: Is it Alive or Dead?

I found a Starfish on a beach near Naples, Florida. I believed that it was dead because it was slightly hard and when I put it under water and tried to caress it’s tentacles it didn’t have any signs of life. I brought it home and put it in a cup of water and let it sit for a couple of hours and upon retrieving it it’s condition seemed not to have changed. So i dried it off and upon doing so it left a dark outline on the napkin on both sides which smelled fishy. This morning it is completely hardened. Did I accidentally kill it? I’ve been saddened all day about it.

Also I found it on the beach far out enough where the waves were not hitting it, so again I’m not sure if that was a livable situation for the starfish.

I found a sea star on a stone plateau 3 meters above the ocean ( right next to the ocean ), so it couldn’t have gotten there on its own. I wasn’t sure if it was alive or not, but it was moving its underside things, does that mean it was alive? I put it back in the ocean anyways, hope that was the right thing to do...?

Yes it was alive and they say don’t pick them up but it was going to die out of land where I found it so I moved star fish back to a deeper part of the ocean I tried to make sure it wasn’t out too long

They say your not supposed to take them out of the water but I picked one up that would have died on land if I didn’t so people once again are dumb just like when people hit baby deer someone yells awe leave it alone! Poor thing after it’s been hit, I’m sure the deer doesn’t want to be just left to die in rain and cold. Just leave it alone is how you do nothing. Atleast the starfish may have a shot at loving and it was alive.

Most sea stars can hold their breath for 30 secs best case. Think about how long you held it in the air … for a video.
