I'm glad that I'm not the only one who hates directional lighting! The first thing I do when I get a new engine or add a decoder is go into JMRI and disable the directional lighting. ESU makes it pretty easy, I have a few Soundtraxx that made it a bit more difficult but still doable. I haven't attempted my Broadway Limited engines yet. I could see how directional lighting may have been a feature in the DC only days so you have a headlight in either direction. But now with DCC direction lighting is not a feature at all! Yet manufacturers continue to list it as a feature...
@SeaboardCentral6 ай бұрын
I agree. I only use LokSound decoders due to their features that I prefer and using the LokProgrammer makes it very easy to program units.

Hey Tim. Nice video. The explanation on consisting and the headlight feature was well done. I couldn't help noticing the tank car at 13:51 in your video took a bad hop on the switch point. And your Seaboard Central boxcars did it too. I'm thinking some of your wheels might be a little out of guage. Just pointing it out to you because I know how slightly out of guage wheels cause derailments and the cars to bounce over frogs and points.
@SeaboardCentral8 ай бұрын
Thanks! It was the switch point. It needs to be filed down.

Great update and nice to see you adding the helix. What are the radius in the helix going to be? The helix kit from Trackside Scenery makes building a helix so much easier. The SC box cars look awesome! Looking forward to the next ops videos.
@SeaboardCentral8 ай бұрын
Thanks Tom! The outside radius is around 32.5” and the inside is around 30”. It is supposed to maintain a 1.8 percent grade but in some areas it may be less.
@JohnB94748 ай бұрын
Tim you are just rocking along on the build. Amazing how much you get done in just one week. But how are you going to lay track inside the helix if its already built? The helix i did many years ago, i had to lay track to a point then add the next helix level, lay more track, etc.
@KraigSickels8 ай бұрын
I have the same issue….. I will wait for Tim’s lead on this project, then I will follow his example.
@SeaboardCentral8 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes, it will be a challenge but the good thing about ME track is that it holds its shape. So I should be able to bend the curve and slide it into place. Stay tuned for the next update to see how well it went.

Great update! You are getting a lot done! The two SC Boxcars are fantastic! For the helix... how are you going to lay track between the layers? Not much room in there to work. Cheers- Brian
@SeaboardCentral8 ай бұрын
Thanks! It will be a challenge but I think I can pull it off. The great thing about ME track is it holds its shape. So I’ll bend the curve and slide them in. I’ll probably secure the track with a thicker Gorilla glue.

Nice how to video Tim, love those ex Conrail 8-40Bs, they had a small fleet of them for TOFC service!!! I get Trains Magazine and I've been keeping up on the proxy fight at NS, how will that affect your job as an engineer with them??

@SeaboardCentral Sweet!! I live next to the old North/ South Conrail line here in Anderson Indiana, NS used to send a Train once a day from Muncie Indiana yards to Avon Indiana, which is now CSX yards, but they have backed off some lately, maybe from a slight drop in interchange traffic!!!

Just to clarify, are all decoders / throttles capable of the independent headlights, or is the ProtoThrottle and / or the ESU decoders a requirement for doing so? I grew up in NYC with an elevated subway line outside my bedroom window. This was in the 1970s and 80s, at the height of the graffiti on subway cars. K-RAIL knocked it out of the park with their graffiti! Love it! ❤
@stevek41538 ай бұрын
I’ve got independent headlights with both ESU and Tsunami 2. The mother board must be wired to separate functions and decoders can have some limitations. Much easier and more versatile to set up with Loksound 5, however.
@SeaboardCentral8 ай бұрын
Thanks! I am not sure about the other brands. It may just be how the decoders are programmed. With ESU it gives you the option to ignore the direction when programming and that will allow you to do this. I have a video on the channel showing how I programmed these units using the LokProgrammer.
@chty97a8 ай бұрын
Wow! Cool update Tim! I can’t wait for the helix to be connected to service the ADM facility. Do you have decals available for an undecorated GP35? Does the Seaboard Central have a GP35 in the roster?
@SeaboardCentral8 ай бұрын
Thanks! No, the SC doesn’t have any GP35s but there is a slot open for some GP39R if someone like ScaleTrains ever decides to do some. At the present, I have all the units I need for the layout.
@georgiasunbelt8 ай бұрын
So, is the only way to set the headlights that way is with a proto-throttle or am I not comprehending a step with the ESU controller…k-rail did a great job with the graffiti
@SeaboardCentral8 ай бұрын
You can do the same thing with the NCE controller. Dial in the rear locomotive in the consist and set light to dim. Then dial in the lead locomotive and set the headlight on it.
@gmburzynski688 ай бұрын
That’s one way to do the headlights. Question, since CV19 is changed. Wouldn’t the functions be ignored ? On my consists I programmed the following: Bright front F0 Dim front F3 Bright rear F6 Dim rear F5 So I can use both light controls on the PT. I also use F4 to “ swap” ends. Once F4 is activated the rear becomes front and the front becomes rear. This is also used to control the horn and the bell. On the sound files, you change the sound speed settings to prevent the sound “phasing” together. I use this if the same sound file is being used for the locos in the consist. Tim, I am pretty sure you do this or know about it already just posting to give other options to your viewers. There are so many rabbit holes you can go down with the Lok V5’s Keep up the awesome work! Greg
@SeaboardCentral8 ай бұрын
Thanks! My function table is different but similar. You are right, they need to be on separate functions and ignore the direction.
@williamdavid93338 ай бұрын
Great looking video. Tim I have a newbie question about the NCE. My wife is allowing me to use an unfinished room over the garage. The room measurements are 10 feet wide and 22 feet long. Will I need to add power districts to the future layout. I want a layout that runs flawless. Any input from you would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
@SeaboardCentral8 ай бұрын
Thanks! It depends on how many trains and how much trackage you have. My old layout was 12’x22’ and I didn’t need to add any so I think you would probably be fine with just the standard NCE system.
@ConductorGoldy8 ай бұрын
It's 2024...why are manufacturers still using directional lighting as the standard? Not hard to fix with the lok programmer, but definitely annoying to have to change every single unit purchased. Layout is coming along great!
