I just got my Seachem 55 and don't regret it at all. I am super happy with this filter and I personally think it's the best one you can get on the market at the moment. The fact the pump is in the tank cuts down on a lot of the noise. It also makes sure that when the power goes out that it won't have a problem self priming to get going again.

Have been running this exact filter on my 40 breeder for ten months with no issue. Motor runs quiet and strong. Have modded the hell out of it with rubber bands and filter floss mesh. But that had solved the issue of any of my Platy fry that I have breed being sucked in. And it is still running as of the posting. Thanks for the video dude🎉

I like how he mentions the cost gently. I have looked at this aspect of the filter and found I can get an Aqua Clear 70 for the price of the Tidal 55. I also understand why he mentioned price gently because it's not really that big of a deal if you are seriously into the hobby. The topic of the space between the wall and the tank, that is something I have had a bad experience with. I started out wanting the tank as tight to the wall as the filters would allow. Only to find out running cords and tubes to be hassle not to mention trying to find cord or tube drips that can happen, in a very narrow space.
@deborahjeanne21415 жыл бұрын
All the pros you gave are the reasons I have 4 of them! They are so very quiet I’m always checking to see if they’re running! LOL! I had an Aquaclear that died after 2 months, and there was too much junk floating in the tank. It’s not overloaded - it has 15 guppies! I liked the Tidal 35 in my betta tank so much, I bought a Tidal 55 for my 20G - it’s a 20G tall and the Tidal 35 doesn’t have an intake flow tube, but the 55 does, so I opted for the bigger filter. The water clarity in all my Tidal tanks is extremely crystal clear, so I bought a Tidal 70 for the 55G I’m about to set up. I agree - the blue dials are annoying, but I’ve put plants in front of it so it’s not as noticeable. I also traced the shape of the filter floss on a piece of cardboard as a template, and it’s really no issue to cut out a piece of floss when it’s time to replace. Another pro is the huge basket - it allows you to put in additional filter floss such ammonia-grabbing filter floss or whatever you want. The Aquaclear basket is rather small without much leeway as to what you might want to use. I’ve only been doing this for 5 months, so it’s always nice to know that someone with your experience and knowledge agrees with me and the choice I made! Thanks for the update.

Another great review! I also bought the tidal 55 for a client's tank. It is really quiet and the way the media basket is designed that goes with the top lid during maintenance is just great so you won't have water dripping all over the place! And with the issue about the flow that bypasses when the sponge is clogged,its just a no brainer that whenever you see the maintenance indicator starts to pop up, you just need to service it right away to avoid the issue. Overall, the seachem tidal filter is great!

I placed a plastic mesh at the bottom of mine so the sponge does not get squished into the open holes and limit water intake. No overflow and much better filtration I have found. Full flow and no bypass. I use about 3 inches of course sponge. Half inch of filter floss, a bag of Seachem Matrix and a bag of Seachem Purigen. All fits with no restrictions. Crystal clear water.

This is a great Idea! I've found bypass happens super fast for me I will have to try this! You placed the mesh in the very bottom of the basket yes? Under the course sponge?

I used to be a big fan of the aquaclear for many many years... Until I moves to a place where we had small, but frequent, power outages. Since the aquaclear isn't self priming, it would often run dry for hours once the power started back up before someone got home and it would destroy the filter and the cycle. I've been using sponge filters since. I think I'm going to give this one a try

A WORD OF WARNING: Though i love everything about this filter, i have found one super annoying situation. I have neon blue dwarf goby. Three of them. These are GREAT little guys. Here's the problem. Wild caught. They are from areas of natural flowing water [think rivers/streams]... so, what's the problem/warning you ask? I keep finding them INSIDE my Tidal 55 HOB filters external water/media reservoir. That's right. They jump UPSTREAM. And they want to hang out INSIDE the HOB filter's reservoir. So, if your neon blue dwarf gobies (or any other wild caught dwarf gobies go missing for a few days... CHECK YOUR RESEVOIR TANK -- very carefully.

I bought a seachem HOB a while back since I was having some minor issues with my fluval HOB (partially due to my inexperience with HOB at the time). The price points were much closer than mentioned in this video at the time (3 months ago, slightly smaller models as well). Not needing to prime your pump, not drudging gunk from the bottom of the tank to fowl the motor, bringing water through all your media, and quiet operation (also great speed control) are just things that I feel like I could not do without in the future - if I continue to use HOB filters (only using the 1 HOB right now, along with a canister filter, 3 box filters, 1 sponge filter, and a circ pump for my 7 tanks). I noticed in Prime Time Aquatics last Marineland filter review the motor had been moved into the water. I think Seachem was the first to do this out of the mainstream HOB manufacturers. Why it wasn't done before blows my mind. Negatives: 1 by-pass: not an issue, I do good maintenance. 2) The color blue: I don't care, if it blended with the HOB would I be able to see it/understand it as well upon opening the box? 3) Skimmer: not good for small fish and shrimp, but usually I would use a box or sponge filter for these tanks. fairly big plus for tanks without, depending on how well it works.

Excellent review. I have the 110 on a 35 gallon and I have to agree the blue dials and the surface skimmer are the main 2 downsides. The 110 may be more filtration than a 35 gallon needs but it is better to go higher than lower. It is extremely quiet . The tank is in the living room and I can hardly ever hear it running. My other 3 tanks are all over 55 gallons and I use canister filters on all of these. If you are going to go with tanks under 45 gallons the Tidal HOBs are great.

AC fanboys can gloat now, but my Aquaclear died only after 4 months of use. >Junk< I replaced my Tidal75 with Marineland Penguin Pro 375 and so far I find it to be the best HOB on the market in the $50-60 US dollar range. The 375 is far and above better than the Marineland 350 we're all used to. I was pleasantly surprised regarding the features... Submerged motor, comes with polishing cartridges, adjustable flow, biowheels, and a hinged lid. Heck, even the intake strainer basket opens to accept media. And it's quieter than my Tidal75. If you haven't already reviewed the Penguin Pro 375, I recommend you check it out.

The skimmer makes them clog more often, pay attention to that little blue pop-up tab, but the ease pf cleaning and the submerged water pump more than makes up tor it. Having kept Seachem Tidal 55s for a couple of years now, I only have one complaint: Trying to get into the impeller housingto clean it is very difficult. Because I have several planted tanks, the impeller can sometimes get clogged with old pieces of plants or an old piece of plant root here and there. Getting the housing open to clean is a chore....it takes all my strength to open. Then, after cleaning, trying to get the housing put back on the way it WAS (with the big fat wire in the way) was cumbersome and tiring. Then, after all that, the impeller can be a tad "off" and starts making a loud noise once turned back on.

I REALLY LOVE the Tidal filters and hope future versions will take the intakes into consideration :)
@rickgrimezz39423 жыл бұрын
I tested Tidal 110, 75, 55. All three have the same issue. Water takes the path of least resistance. This filter is poorly designed. If you add a pre-filter to the unit...so your shrimp do not get pulled into the filter. The water just takes the path of least resistance and gets pulled from the surface skimmer. So no filtration occurs from near the bottom of the tank. So basically you bought a real nice surface skimmer... that really doesn't filter the bottom of the water column in the tank. Also, the extension tube that you can raise and lower. The unit pulls water in from the clamping mechanism as well. So it's not even a water-tight seal to secure proper suction by the pump. Overall this filter is one of the worst designed filters I have ever seen. The only other filter worse than this at these price points... are the Top Fin Pro series filters. Those are utterly worthless as well. Aquaclear 110 is the best HOB filter because it doesn't have any of those issues at all. Also, I have my fish tanks on UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) battery backup. So I never lose power to my tanks. So the pump in the water argument is completely worthless to the conversation because everything you value should be on some sort of battery backup so power outages do not destroy your sensitive equipment, gaming computers... TVs... and more. Hands down... I would NEVER recommend Tidal filtration to anyone. Its snake oil at best!
@scotthopkins22352 жыл бұрын
I don't have this filter, but I assume there is a way to silicone a black plastic plate over the skimmer vents either from the inside or less appealing outside. I would venture to guess that a really crafty person could make a sliding door over the vents so they could be closed and opened at will.

How far down does the water outlet sit inside the tank? I have a planted tank and I currently use an aqua clear and the level and angle of the outlet on those causes the water to tumble into the tank more harshly and blows my plants around a lot. I am sorry to say that after having this filter for just over 24 hours I will be returning it. The bummer is that skimmer, it takes all the intake power away from the drop down intake tube, hardly any suction there. I wish you had mentioned that in your review. If I had wanted all my suction at the top I would have bought the 35. The main reason I was so excited about this filter was the drop down intake which is at a great level for my 29 tank, kind of a tall tank. Thanks for this video. I got this filter about 2 weeks ago and I noticed that it really doesn’t work as soon as the water goes below the top skimmer vents. The stem really doesn’t work much. Is that normal?

I have this HOB filter, and while I like it, it's been impossible for me to turn down the flow because the knob at the top isn't working properly. I discovered the plastic extension "rod" connected to the knob is probably bent. It used to be the lid to that housing was removeable, but it seems like that design was changed,. Can't remove it.. So I'm stuck with max flow. I'm not sure how to remedy this, and the issue drives me crazy sometimes! Otherwise, the filter does a great job.

Can’t remember if I asked already but what would you recommend if the surface skimmer get blocked by floating plants? It makes this super annoying stuttering noise like its sucking in air. I was thinking of making some sort of additional screen that would jut out from the filter, and clear it of any plants maybe that would work.
@PrimeTimeAquatics9 ай бұрын
You could try to put a screen an inch or so in front of it?

I know the bigger ones do. I use my own media sponge, lava rock rings and polyfil. I don't know if it's a design flaw or I'm just unlucky but I've twice had a problem with overflow coming out of those top vents along the back. I've had this filter since June 2021 and the problem first occurred a couple of month ago. Then again last night after I had serviced the media. Think I lost about a half gallon which didn't do the floor any good. The flow has always been set to full blast so I'll have to dial it down. I'll see how that works out. Not sure I can trust this filter anymore if I'm away on vacation. I also have a couple of 35s which haven't had this problem yet.

Would the flow from filter be too strong for a 29 gallon stocked with Harlequin Rasboras and Panda Coroies (and a colony of shrimp assuming I can get a sponge into that surface intake)?

You can adjust the flow to fit your needs. It should work well (assuming you can block that skimmer).

@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын
Definitely. You probably only need the HOB filter, but if you want the sponge as a cycled backup in case anything happens to the HOB filter, or for starting another tank it can be of value.

@apaulmcdonough21704 жыл бұрын
@@BurnzAd6, a 55 would be Sufficient, especially since you plan to use a Sponge Filter. *Don't get cute and stuff the Media Basket with your own media.* The mesh bags, that SEACHEM provides with their own media, act as Fine Mechanical Filtration, simply rinse the Bags when you do Water Changes. Watch all the Videos of People *"Fine Tuning"* SEACHEM Filters by stuffing them with their own media and then complaining about bypass ...! The filter is designed to bypass when Media needs attention so that the tank still gets Oxygenated!

I like internal filters. But I have a question: does the motor in the tank that makes it so quiet for us make it noisy for the fish? Just curious if anyone knows of any studies done on that. I like the narrow profile, but I am so addicted to double sponging the Aquaclears I'm sure I'd ever change. Also, I'm not sure what I'm doing right, but I've never had an aquaclear not start after a power outage or water change.
@ChuckD595 жыл бұрын
We think alike; I was also wondering what the now in-the-tank pump does for adding noise to the fish. And likewise, I've been running an Aquaclear 110 on a 65 gallon planted tank for over a year with two sponges (1 fine and 1 course) and have never experienced it failing to start up. I wonder if the sponges inhibit the syphoning that happens when the pump stops, keeping more water in the filter. On the subject of 'maintain your filters', I've found that's the primary reason mine starts to make the rattling noise many complain about from these. I know when I hear that it's time to clean the internals, and it goes back to silent operation.
@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. I have no way to measure internal noise, but it is a legitimate question.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for the reply, love your channel. Just want to add that it's such a concern of mine that I've tried to isolate it from the tank as much as possible by having the filter hang on a layer of a neoprene-like material (actually an old yoga mat) and about 3/8" of cork between the filter and the back of the tank. Fish seem happy but who knows?

Are we able to access the pump housing to change the impeller or replace the motor? I'm guessing the skimmer is always open... or is there a shutoff valve?
