You should get a stethoscope for this process. Car mechanics use them to check injectors. You could use it to listen to the drive much better without putting your ear to it. Great video, love the time and effort that was put into it.

Ever Hitachi or Western Digital I have ever had has survived (knock on wood that one of my drives doesn't die and prove me wrong just because I said that.) Just my anecdotal experience, but yea. These guys probably do A LOT of Seagate recovery work, lol. My current oldest drive (WD) has been on nearly 24/7 since January 2011. My last Seagate drive died in less than 2 years.

I remember when we had to manually tell the hard drive to park the heads before shutting down the computer... and if you didn’t and moved the computer even slightly... bye bye data. I nudged he desk once with the computer off and caused a head crash. Trashed a load of Lotus 1-2-3 files I’d been working on. I was NOT happy as the guy who had been on before me told me “Nahhh, you don’t need to park the heads. They probably do it automatically.” But then again, in the late 70’s hard drives were notoriously fragile.

I would just like to point out something about the masks. I'm a farmer and I'm speaking from personal experience using these masks when dealing with chemicals. Those masks are only good for an hour or so and then they get wet. When they're wet the filtration is not effective anymore and all the air you are breathing escapes near your cheeks. You could leave them out to dry but that would probably defeat the purpose. Just a friendly fyi. Cheers and keep up the good work!

Covid masks are for decreasing how far droplets from your exhales travel, they don't need to filter. Cutting momentum of particles is enough.

@@_PatrickO They also work for germinating germs and cutting the oxygen level that gets into your blood while decreasing the amount of carbon dioxide that you can exhale... since some gets trapped in the space between the mask and your mouth and nose and doesn't just float away like it should. Not healthy for the long term. Don't wear one unless you have to.

@@_PatrickO While you are correct, you fail to see the other part of the problem. When the mask is wet all air is moved between the mask side and the cheek. So if for example someone sneezes toward you, their droplets maybe caught in the air flow while you are inhailing. But that would have to be a person without a mask. That is why it's not a good idea to wear a wet mask (at least in my use case with chemicals).

I have a bunch of guitars with rosewood fretboards. It's funny in that world rosewood is considered the "cheap" and "common" option, whilst the more expensive guitars often have ebony fretboards or something like birdseye maple.

When I worked for a PC manufacturer back in the 80's, the Seagate drives always gave us a lot of problems. IMHO I do question the quality of Seagate but I haven't used them ever since. I do use mainly WD and never had issues with them, where some drives (according to SMART) been running for many years. Interesting to see that without the spacesuit and extremely overpriced charges for some data-recovery companies, a good technician can do a very decent job in recovery/repair. I guess the moto is when you do have a drive-failure and important data: pack it, label it, ship it. And do not touch it, do not screw (pun intended) with it anymore, leave it to the professionals.

Not to sound stupid, but the "patient" drive was a 1RK172-568, and the correct donor ended up being the donner drive that was a 1RK172-568 while the incompatible donner was a 1RK172-070. Wouldn't this be a much better "guess" to use the actual part number vs. a DOM?

Can you make a video on working with hybrid drives? Also I know Seagate is bad but I have had worse experience with HP "brand" drives, Seagates are not the worst out there; I can say (in my opinion and from what crossed my table the least) Western Digital are the most reliant for recovery.

46:40 "what the drive is drawing in" - I once had a Seagate drive which fell off a table to the carpet below in a HDD case whilst powered up. It worked nearly normally as a low priority stuff backup drive for some years and then suddenly began clicking. I was about to replace its PCB but suddenly it came back to life once powered up by another PSU. I then checked the original power supply from McAlly and found that it fails to power up most of another HDDs I had back then. So the real reason behind was a PSU deterioration that began to deliver less power than necessary.

I have suggestion for you. Kind of educated guess. When you worry about type of preamp used in any of those mechanical HDDs, you probably shouldn't. Try replacing the headstack along with the control board it came with, and swap the EEPROM from the patient onto the donor part. I am pretty sure control boards will have different part number difference for each specific preamp. Are you getting my idea?

those are usually codes so scanners at the factory can verify that it's the correct component

It appears to be the part number, which matches the drive marked 8202, and not the C202. The C202 also had different firmware indicated. If I had to hazard a guess as to which was more likely to contain compatible parts, I personally would have gone with the 8202 donor first despite the manufacturing date/location info. I skipped around a bit through the video, as it was a bit too long for me to sit through the entirety... which head stack did he end up using, the C202 or 8202? (Later Edit:) Oh, wait... I misread your comment, you said pre-amp connector, not drive. Yeah, I missed seeing that one. Good catch, now I wonder, too.

With PC3000 better first step to swap to Engineering test firmware. It allowed use more command like heads parameters adjustments for better fast reading and bad block correction. Also highly recommended stop MEDIA CACHE process in firmware.Do not turn of just stop it. Need turn of recalibration process (firmware flags ), turn off fast move heads operation, and turn of write. Better for rosewood create media cache table and user table and after combine it with MC table list in Data extractor rosewood plugin. If hard drive do not starting itself then upload firmware in memory use SATA and after leave translation system only for fast and better data reading. Questions ? ready to answer.

mrlithium Russian have good hackers. They can do firmware reverse engineering. Some Russian working in Seagate technology and WD like developers and provide some service manuals and sources for ACE lab. in Russia, the law does not prohibit making changes and modifying the program code (firmware). However it is prohibited in America. :-)

I watched this entire video. What a ride! I did notice one thing - the labels on D2 and Patient are very similar even though DOM are significantly far apart. The layout of the text, barcodes, etc., and specifically the areas of white space was much more similar between D2 and P than was D1. (See 1:15) Maybe that can be an indicator to watch for in the future. Take that with a grain of salt as I am not a recovery tech :)

I have a few questions. 1. Where do donor drives come from? Are they working drives pulled out of salvage machines, or are they brand new drives sold as surplus in bulk, or something else? If they're new retail drives, I can see why (other than the highly skilled labor involved) drive recovery is so expensive! If they can only be used once, every time a donor drive is used that's the price of a new drive. 2. Can the heads from one donor drive get used more than once? How are they stored, if that's the case? Do you simply put the heads back in the donor drive for storage? 3. I wonder about head registration - here there are two heads, the tracks on the platter are tiny, it wouldn't take much for the heads to get out of alignment, I'd think... I hate to think of how difficult this would be with multiple platters. 4. You mentioned that you needed to check how many platters and heads there were in the drive. Did they actually make this model of drive (1 TB Rosewood) with differing numbers of heads and platters?? I can't imagine fitting more than one platter in that enclosure. Or were you talking about drives in general? I am amazed that they could actually put one terabyte into a one platter in a 2.5" drive. In any case.. I suppose it's a real lesson about why backups are so important. A LOT cheaper and a lot less hassle than having to go through this. There's a proliferation of cloud storage solutions these days, too - Google Drive, Microsoft's One Drive, Dropbox - and they're getting easier and easier to use, though they also have their issues.

1) working pulls from salvage or used on ebay. they dont have to be perfect, just good enough 2) yes. they might even leave them in to save time, and once recovery is done, the patient becomes a new potential donor. customers old drives are usually not returned to them once recovered, because a brand new drive is purchased to store the recovered files. After all that work you don't want to send them back with something of questionable lifespan. 3) there is a dynamic calibration process built into the firmware by seagate. you can also view head calibration data or make power, preamp, servo or other changes manually but he didnt even bother to look at those. which might have revealed clues why it wasnt reading at first. There were probably about 10 other things he could have double checked instead of repeating the same 3 things over and over. Also the fact that background re-allocations were succeeding was another big overlooked clue. 4) most likely a general statement. you dont want to go by "1TB Rosewood" anyway. thats too general, you want the full model number ST1000LM035-1RK172 specifically the last 6. Worst comes to worse you can try a mismatch, but I wouldnt. There are families of drives, in this case "Rosewood" codename for short, and they often turn high end drives from that family into lower end ones by removing some of the heads and platters, like a 2TB that failed validation at the factory into a 1TB. What is not mentioned at all is that "PC-3000" does all the software work for you and is the license is extremely costly, $2000+ dollars a year. Even if you physically did the head swap yourself, you would most likely be unsuccessful at home. Seagate has also locked normal users out of the serial terminal so you need the tech unlock handshake code. Louis should make more videos explaining why you should invest in his data recovery service rather than deluding people into thinking they can do it themselves from one video. Louis did say it was his new mission to demystify Data Recovery in 2020, like he did for Macbook Repair already, so I guess this is part 1 of N....

Oh to have Seagates. Our supplier uses Toshiba drives and they are juuuuuuuunk!!! Loads of them DOA and so many failed under warranty. I am tripping over stacks of bad drives. By far the worst I've ever had to deal with. Luckily we usually have the privilege of not needing data recovery. I'm fairly successful at force cloning them over a day or two if need be. Otherwise, I toss it on the pile of Toshibas and figure I'll get around to scoring some more magnets later. Best drives I've worked with so far, Fujitsu. Almost all of them are making it to 60,000 hours and I have some still running fine at 90,000+ hours

as a total HDD recovery noop i have to ask, why one shouldn't plug the repaired drive in a normal computer as 2nd drive, and copy and paste the data form it, instead of using a PC-3000 software?

I have basically the same question, how risky is it and is there any chance it will just work if you have the compatible head assembly. Thought about ordering two identical drives and practicing swapping those but don't know if there is any benefit just being able to do that without the PC-3000 system.

It's because of the way the OS accesses the drive. If it finds a bad or slow reading sector it will try to read it over and over and likely destroy it and then shut down. It also moves the head back and forth over the drive trying to recreate each file from data spread over a number of sectors. Data recovery software simply takes an image of the drive starting in the beginning and moving to the end, or in reverse. It can also time how long it takes to access a sector and will skip it if it looks suspect. It can read the good sectors first and then go back and try to access the bad ones. That way it doesn't risk trashing the drive before it has all the good data. Also hardware, and some software data recovery solutions can reset or restart the drive if it shuts down due to a bad sector. An OS won't do this, it will simply shut down. Basically put, an OS is designed to respect file system integrity. Data recovery software is designed to respect data integrity.

PC-3000 has special procedues and secret algorithms to access it. A lot of top secret info is put into making it, and you have to pay to get access. Its not the regular kind of software. You would fail or damage it more if you tried without it. This needed to be addressed in the video, or people will be confused and ruin their drive trying it themself.

A lot of tools I don't have. I have an external drive that takes hours to be detected or not. Tested outside of the enclosure too, but hot connect was not detected in windows and I didn't test any further.
