Im going to give my interpretation on this story (though nobody will probably see it). Within Monster, Johan has multiple identities. In fact; this is one of the first things revealed about Johan's character. I believe these two parts of himself to he Johan's innerself and his outer projection (The Monster). His true-self slowly fading into obscurity as his outer projection slowly takes over. This is showcased in Obluda, where the nameless monster takes over the Prince. In this case, in the awakening monster, the unfortunate youth is similar to the prince in Obluda, while the Monster in the cave mimicks The Nameless Monster. What's important to know is that in both these stories, and in fact; nearly all of Franz Bonaparta's stories, is that they all embody a deal made with a malevolent external force. Which directly draws parallels to many German works, most notably "Faust" by Goethe. In the play, a man named Faust yearns for knowledge and thus, makes a deal with the German devil "Mephistopheles" in exchange for his soul being damned to hell. (the interaction is interesingly referenced by Eva.) This is similar to how the Prince (Johan) gave his name to the Nameless Monster and how the unfortunate youth gave his name to the Monster. Both children gave up their souls. In this instance, the youthful child within the awakening monster mimicks Faust in so many ways. Both were seeking knowledge, and not only that, Faust was labelled as "God's favourite" while the unfortunate youth takes the title of "The most loved person in the world." I think it's also worthy to note how Faust, after making the deal with Mephistopheles, heavily regrets it, though he realises he can't go back; he ends up believing he is irredeemable. Johan aswell, after accepting the Monster taking over his body, ends up regretting it and believing he is irredeemable [this is showcased where he says "Its too late for that now" when Anna forgives him.] Its reflected in the story of the Awakening Monster when the youth exclaims that the most loved person has the same name as him, never stopping to consider weather or not; the most loved person was him all along. The youth has no understanding of his own worth, just like Johan. In both stories, Faust is damned to hell in the end, whille Johan's (innerself) is damned to a barren wasteland of his mind (The Landscape of the end/Scenery for a doomsday) In Faust, the protagonist is ultimately saved when his loved one (Gretchen) calls for the virgin mary to redeem his sins and allow him to go to heaven. In Monster, as his loved one (Anna) asks Dr Tenma to save Johan's life one more time. Both acts are the ultimate act of forgiveness. It allows Johan to realise that even he is capable of being forgiven, causing him to drop his ideology. His innerself is finally free from hell (The landscape of the end), and the monster is gone (symbolising the dissapearance of Johan from the hospital bed once he's given a name - to add, Lunge describes that only a demon could leave no trace, Johan leaving a messy bed showcases he's no longer a demon, but a human) It explains why only Tenma and Anna could see the landscape in the end and why everyone else couldn't. Because they were the only people to see beyond a Monster, to see Johan's true self trapped in the landscape of the end. When Johan asks for Tenma to shoot, Tenma hesitates heavily after seeing Johan's vision, because he wasn't seeing the Monster everyone else sees, he sees the true Johan, not a beast, but a child - the one he saved. Anyways, I yap about this series alot. Hopefully, someone saw this and gained something from it :)

@Ai-Spectre0
@Ai-Spectre0 6 күн бұрын
@amna1655 Johan's innerworld (The scenery for a doomsday) is perceptible to those who can truly discern his psychological isolation and his authentic identity. Practically, one must be able to grasp the intricate nuances of Johan's true self. This explains why people such as Roberto couldn't see the scenery - they could only comprehend Johan's constructed facade, the "Monster" (false self). It's impossible to form a basis of someone's ideology if you remain oblivious of one's true genuine personality (Johan's veritable identity) Wolf, however, had the privilege of witnessing the innerworld because Johan had allowed it. Following the rescue of the twins, Wolf inquired "How are you feeling?" to which Johan responded, "you'll know very soon." In the aftermath of Johan basically murdering everyone who were close to Wolf, he had come to a profound realisation - Johan's sense of eternal isolation. The epiphany had elucidated Johan's prior statement. In essence, Johan orchestrated a psychological recreation of his own torment of Wolf. When wolf claims he finally comprehends what Johan meant, it signifies that he has endured the same harrowing dread of isolation, thus truly understanding Johan's true/veritable self. I hope that clears up any confusions, you can ask more questions if you feel like it.

My interpretation: The name of the youth was taken from him, because the moment he shouted his own name at the cave, he essentially gave it over to the monster. As Bonaparta once said to his editor, "When you take away their name, the person dies"... and thus a Nameless Monster is born. This was an excellent narration of the storybook, btw. How long did it take you to perfect the pronounciations of those (presumably Czech) names?
@SeaGee
@SeaGee 3 жыл бұрын
Yes Moonlight! Always love your thoughts. Maybe it's Fuhr reflecting his own journey as well. His name having been given away to Bonaparta after years at the Red Rose. Becoming another nameless monster that he remains now. And thanks! That's really appreciated! To be honest, those name pronunciations were more shots in the dark. Im hoping that after learning the names from the main series, these ones wouldn't be far off.
@moonlightray8493

@@SeaGee Ooh, I like that suggestion! Perhaps that's what Johan meant when he said that "The monster wasn't inside me... it was outside". In the process of losing his name/identity to Bonaparta, Johan and Fuhr each became a Nameless Monster. However, unlike the storybook where only the original monster remained, the one whose name was consumed continues to exist alongside the one who'd consumed his name, thus making him confused as to where the "monster inside him" originated from (internally VS externally). And yeah, that's a very reasonable way of appraoching the names. I'm glad you appreciate all my long-winded commentaries, haha. Keep up the great work :)

@@SeaGee No, I think this the story of Tenma, through a fairy tail point of view, he search the name of the monster (so "who he is") all along his journey. When Tenma achieved the medical operation, the cave is oppened. And the monster take his name and this the beginning of the journey for Tenma to get back his name. The mother who cries is the mother of Johann, Anna, for her the most loved person on earth is Johann (she gave Nina to the scientists). To save Johann, he must remind the monster that he has a name to get his own back. But the name of the monster and the youth were the same, but the youth remember very well his name. It's like to say: the real name of Johann is Tenma, the real name of the monster is you. "You can be the devil or the good, it's up to you to decide who you wants to be".

This story felt surreal. I’m currently on the track to do my MA thesis and my interest is mainly about fairy tales and children’s literature, so I was reminded of the stories Urasawa crafted in Monster. It was strange that I realized that these stories made for children have more meanings to deliver in the simplest way of storytelling. It’s terrifying. A child me would probably interpret those tales in Urasawa books as horror tale genre but adult me now think that how those tales are related to the real world in a way. I don’t want to sound like off tangent or anything haha but after studying extensively on tales and folklores, it’s scary how accurate it can be to portray the human condition.

I am now indeed horrified. When i was in college in one of my creative writing classes we had to write a children's story for the class and read it. Knowing that more than likely no one in my class has prob ever watches anime I shamelessly copied the entire story of "The Nameless Monster" and read it to the class. It was.....and interesting experience, some found it funny, some found it creepy, and others were confused if what was the moral of the story. These fictional stories backdropped to a fictional story and characters while somewhat seated with real life socio-political events and concepts like Communism and eugenics i find these children stories to have more to say then just being weird and unsettling "children's books".

I think the youth and the monster are actually one and the same. Like Hermann Fuhr right now is living a peaceful life and had kinda put away his past as a monster (the same way the youth was said to not return to the cave after hearing about people's most loved one). However him going back to the cave was like him from time to time poking back at his past (or the people reminding him of it like Capek or Webber at sometimes of his life). But after that he comes to know someone who loves him (someone who knows about who he was and needs his power and with whom he feels really needed) and so he goes back to awaken his monster (he goes back to becoming a nameless monster and doing his deeds). I don't know if that makes sense but this is my interpretation of it.
@SeaGee
@SeaGee 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good interpretation! At the end of the Another Monster book Hermann Fuhr talks about "being freed" by seeing Johan burn down the Red Rose Mansion. Do you think that would be the "awakening the monster" part of the story?

After all ''another monster'' could refer to him meeting another one like him. Between very loved your videos on this series and also on billy bat. Billy bat was a really great tale and the messaging beautiful. If monster gave me a real sense of dread at the end, billy bat made me full of hope for the future, i even cried a little haha XD Idk if u read 'pluton' it's a Collab with astro boy's author and was really nice too. Also about ''Awakenin monster" I thought of another thing. What if like bonaparta's stories instead of mirroring Fuhr's life it's more of a simple messaging? For example if ''nameless monster'' showed how someone without identity, "a name'' becomes a monster who steals other ppl's lives, ''awakening monster'' maybe how such a monster is born. It has to be someone who knows what love is, and is really loved by someone. Then take their identity, their name destroy those memories and he'll become one. Or even the lost loved/happiest person in the world can become a monster it just takes to '' awaken the monster inside them'' and they'll forget all about it. With for instance, bonaparta's methods

Plus I just love Kevin Goodman. What a guy And yes I've read Pluton. Also great just a very quick finish. That moment when Gesicht gets his memories back was tragic. I feel like through all of these series, he takes a deep dive into identity and it's so interesting. I need to jump back into Asadora soon to see where that's up to. I've only read the first couple chapters from when it's release started and should probably dive back in. Ooo I like that. That definitely ties in with how the brainwashing techniques are described. That flashlight metaphor. Maybe we are all a moving of the flashlight away from being Nameless Monsters ourselves...

In The Nameless Monster, the Monster jumped into people, but here the kid jumped into the Monster. So this monster was good cause the kid ate the monster? Mmm, or did the sleeping monster trick the kid to steal his name? And the mother crying, was she Johan's mother? Did he want her to cry and feel guilty? So now she loves him, he will accept the name she gave him... 😵

I think it's the beginning of "Monster" explain in the Tenma's point of view through a fairy tail. The youth wants everything, but it's a youth so he doesn't know what is "everything", so he decide to try to resolve the issu of a monster but in during his mission (like be a doctor) he finds love and love and forget about the cave (the monster), but the "monster" came back through another way: by the love of his desperate mother. So the youth meet the mother and tell the name of this son, and the youth tell to the monster his name. At this point Tenma save Johann with his operation, it's like he said "you exist, your name count in this world, this is you identity". At this moment the cave door is open and the monster take the name of Tenma (crunch crunch etc.). Why this is "the awakening Monster"? Because Tenma just after open the door to the "monster" (the operation) Tenma is bully and wish "them dead" just beside the bed of Johann: at this moment the true identity of the monster was settled whith this question: "if this man can save me and give me a name, why he denied his name to the others, what a gonna do if I still his name?" And johann kills doctors (the three) and catch the name of Tenma, pushing him in a murder boot.

Problem with that theory is that if it was indeed Johan, then it should have been included at the end of the story rather than us being left clueless to who or what the actual name is. Remember that the story or message here is that the Youth tries to see the Monster by saying the name. However, the problem with that at the near end of the story is to how did the youth know that the woman described is actually him? Is the mother of the youth his actual mother? And How'd her son all of a sudden disappeared? The youth used his own name but not the name of the person he shares the same with. It's basically similar to the whole twins things but this time it's more about the person's identity/name. Here's my 2 theories based on my understanding of the story. Edit: I'm adding an extra 3rd theory here. My 1st theory suggests is that that boy is the boy that disappeared from the mother and my guess is that for each time he attempts to reaching out the monster from villages and trying to get the names of the people to reach out to the sleeping monster. His own identity becomes different to the point that the mother cannot recognize her own son. Why? Because once you steal or lose your name, the person dies. The youth is different from before, well in the video we may not have seen the youths face change but maybe it refers to the identity he goes by with? And that the mothers son who's disappeared has been taken. Simply because that son was loved. And love is something that is considered deep in the Monster Anime. Especially in the ending. When Tenma asked the twins mother. The mother of the twins said she loves them both but Johan asks Tenma the question. "Did my mother chose my sister to protect me? Or did she mistaken me as my sister?" and another thing is this, The mother told Tenma that she actually gave the twins names. Which means... Their real names aren't actually Johan and Nina... And this story is about the youth using a fake name, that he believes to be real. Just like how he believes his name is the same with the disappeared son from the mother. This makes sense because the twins disappeared from their mother before they even got a chance to know their actual names. And this story is doing the same thing but this time it's no longer about a lost twin, rather it's a lost identity of someone, so he uses his own identity to later on lose it in the process. To be consumed, by the "Another Monster." Theory number 2. The one that disappeared was murdered and the Youth stole his name. And used it, why? Because that name was loved deeply by the mother. 3rd theory is kinda the same with the 2nd one but a bit different so here it is. 3rd theory: To go even deeper into this theory we have to know what term disappear is. Is it disappear as in lost? Disappear as in dead? Or is disappear as in not existing, almost as if you are nameless. Sounds familiar right? Which explains why when the youth used his own name, the monster awoken and ate him. Because the one that disappeared is in-fact, the nameless monster. And that the youth encountering the nameless monster's mother is to why his name was taken, leading to him getting eaten. So what's the name then? I may not have a direct conclusion to what the name would've been but I'm going to assume it has a letter "A" in it. With 4-5 letters. Johan and Nina both have A in their names, and knowing that these names were described as beautiful in the monster anime. It is a high possibility that the letter A is our first evidence to what the name of the youth is. Even in the Another monster, a sequel to the events after Monster. The serial killer also had a letter A in his name. But is the serial killer the "Another Monster?" most likely no. But it is a starting point to where the story is going and that it's just up to us to interpret the information we have been provided by Urasawa. If it was the same name as Johan. Then, holy shit. I was just overthinking things then. Making the 3 theories a bit meaningless but oh well, it's just theories anyways.

I think this book is about the author himself, the first part of the narrative that the youth wanted everything, might be what hermann has been conditioned as a child, to be a superior student in the red rose mansion. As the story goes on, he forgot about the sleeping monster _parallel to him continuing his lives freely in germany, writing Dorn of the Darkness series. But he stopped writing his novel_ and goes on the run, since capek (the monster on his mind) is looking after him. Probably this was the parallel to the youth being reminded about the sleeping monster in the cave_ that he once had forgotten And my take on the last part where the youth goes back to the cave, unleashed the monster_killing himself in the process, is the time when he goes back to the red rose mansion im 1997, seeing it burns, and met johan. Hermann felt free. The monster inside him is free now, and he can have everything he wanted_ live free. stopped running_ therefore he need to kill his identity. . . ANOTHER MONSTER SPOILER AHEAD . And so the novel story is what happened after the monster awakened.. in which the monster inside hermann himself In 1998 peter capek died, and so hermann published his first picture book (the sleeping monster) since he thought it was safe now for him to do that, and that he is no longer pursued. But his editor mentioned that he already have the manuscript for the awakening monster, but havent been able to draw it, due do unexplained circumstances on hermann's end. At it was mentioned that the next book already had a preorder of a thousand copies_ even before it was published ?? My interpretation is that, hermann goes into hiding and search for people who might've been able to identify him. Since i think hermann doesnt want to take part in the book seminar as in the red rose mansion ever again. In 1999 he sheltered kottmann (since he was his fans, and he can feel that they belong to the same type of ppl) and in 2000 killed Molke just because he know about him , but him being shot in the hand wasnt part of the plan. So he sent kottmann to kill the ER medics. At last.. when webber is looking for hermann identity. He has no other choice than to make webber dissapeared. He know webber was prying on to his existence, probably from the call to his old apartment? And now that webber is gone_ hermann get everything he wanted_ parallel to the legend in the awakening monster.

YOU HAVE TO DO IT FOR YOU AND FOR THE OTHERS. YOU HAVE TO BEHAVE YOURSELF , WITH TOUGH LOVE. You a smoker? Quit. You do drugs? QUIT. You obese? LOSE WEIGHT FFS. You don't love'yourself? DO IT. But there's no other way around it. Becoming a Monster (growing up) doesn't mean being a manipulator. It means you're going to treat yourself, and others, even your own child, a little bit like shit sometimes... for their own good. Or you can become like Johan and "do good" by giving money to drug addicts and helping rich grandpas feeling you again. That's not love.

I don't think we know. I'd say either Weber managed to send off his report before going to visit Fuhr or Fuhr left it behind as a warning
