Save the Natural resources. Aquaculture and farming will help negate the overfishing as well as make it more affordable. This was an example of what we as consumers can do to protect the natural stocks as well as their environments.

I remember my mom very rarely getting fresh abalone from the seafood market or possibly from an acquaintance who dived. This was back in southern California in the 50s. It wasn't over fished lik ed it is now......but abalone was still expensive and hard to get. It was very tender and testy the way she would cook it. Mostly because she would beat the daylights out of it before cooking.

@@kimglover6968 no, they are more like clam. Very mild. They don't have the oyster flavor note at all. Just remember to pound them with a hammer to tenderize them. Otherwise they are very tough.

I had a friend who was a diver and one time we were out and he came across a good sized Abalone. To be funny, he T-Bagged it. And I took a photo. Well, when he went to remove it= it had attached itself to the sack of his testicles and started to suction to them Extremely Hard. He was panicking and I had to rescue him and get him out of the water. He sat on the boat just writhing in pain but there was just no way to remove it. I immediately took him to shore and called 911. By the time he had gotten to the hospital, it had taken so long, that it had cut off the blood and oxygen supply to his testicles. And they had to remove them. It was the freakiest accident I had ever witnessed. Though he's adapted to life without his testicles (he has prosthetic plastic ones now) it just goes to show you how thinking you're being harmlessly funny can turn tragic real quick. Every year, for his birthday, I send him a giant pet Abalone to take care of. We're not as close as we used to be.

Which is worth more, the meat or the shell? There's a big market for Abalone shells. It looks like this company only packs the meat for their Consumers. I've seen Abalone shell used in Wall Picture Decor, Backdrop kitchen tiles and jewelry making (which is what I do). The more color they have the more expensive they are. Very much like Pearls. I wonder since these are harvested on a Farm , if that effects the quality or quantity of shells?
