I have (and reviewed) the 38mm with an acrylic crystal. It is one of my favorite watches. I think the 38mm version is much better proportioned and thus looks better. Great review Rob.

Yep. I agree, on both points. I could have chosen sapphire for the same price, but that domed acrylic? Far superior visually (and Polywatch is our friend!). I do however, like the 42mm Panda dial 'versions' made by Sugess with the same movement. Can't have too many Column Wheel Chronographs!

Hey Rob. Just out of interest, I have a wrist size of a little over 8" and I wear a 38mm version without an issue. I do wear it on a riveted strap - any strap detail close to the lug ends tends to food the eye and help a smaller piece look larger, the 'vintage' style straps with twin horizontal lines near the lugs do the same thing... Something I always like to mention when I see videos like this 'cause I don't believe guys with large wrists should avoid sub 40mm pieces. This, for all intents and purpose., is a vintage piece: it's not supposed to be a large watch by current standards - despite being an aviators watch. Legible? Yes. Large. Not necessarily. I enjoy your posts mate, and enjoyed this one. Not many reviews of the 42mm 1963 on YT. That case shape? It's bloody gorgeous!...the way it tapers in? Great design. It's those little extra bits, those curves to the taper that don't serve any practical purpose and are done just for beauty's sake. That's part of the appeal of watch collecting. Cheers, and stay healthy.

The 38mm is the “genuine” one/copy. I have a smaller wrist 6 3/4” so it’s more suited to me. But I do have & wear 42mm & slightly bigger but I wanted the more authentic version. Great watch, looks fantastic & keeps great time.

I have one but the movement feels rough. When i press the Stopwatch start button too slow, it jumps 5-15 sec negative. When i push quick and firm, the stopwatch starts correctly. So when you buy, check the stopwatch by pressing start button slowly. They did not polish the gears and levers.

It's still amazing that you can buy a fully functioning hand wind mechanical watch with a column wheel for this kind of price. If I recall correctly this is the Swiss Valjoux 175 movement. Valjoux sold all of their machinery to the Chinese back in the early 1960's when they wanted to move on to other movements. The Chinese have been using these machines ever since to make these. I wish I could buy all the machinery for the Lemania 5100 chronograph movement. You know, because the Swiss aren't really using it. Well, maybe Breguet but I'm not sure.

@@mariog7213 Thanks Mario: 100 % right. As a rabid old school chronograph guy I just throw out out movement numbers and I hope I get it right. I like to think I'm cool knowing all the ins and outs of every movement from every chronograph. Guess what, I don't always get it right. I appreciate guys like you letting me know this as it gets me back into my watches again. I actually still own examples of the 175 and 150 movements before they became Russian and Chinese Movements. Both of them are from the late 1950's and as far as I know have not had a service in a long time. And they both run really good.. Thanks man

A commie watch on a NATO strap is just too ironic for me ;) or a Vostok for that matter! I just love that gorgeous movement though! EMG DL63 is a great alternative watch with the same movement. Not listed on their website anymore unfortunately.

This is not an authentic seagull 1963 reissue. It's a homage, made by red star, not from Seagull Tianjin factory. The real one has "Tian jin" in Chinese printed on dial and the homage one only has "made in China" in Chinese printed on dial.
@DanboShaw
@DanboShaw 4 жыл бұрын
That's true, but the history of the "Seagull 1963" reissue is quite confused. Though the original watch was made in the 60's by Tianjin Watch Factory for the PLA Air Force, IIRC a reissue was first made by Hong Kong Tsinlien Seagull in the mid 2000s. The employee behind making that reissue, Thomas Leung, left the company to form Red Star watches and started making his own version. Tianjin Seagull didn't start making its own "official" reissue until a few years ago, after seeing how popular the versions made by other companies were! forums.watchuseek.com/f72/thomas-leung-talking-1963-re-issues-china-watch-clock-fair-2019-a-5040623-post49928425.html#post49928425

At least the 19-jeweled version with acrylic crystal that I have is closer to the original. The price for the acrylic and sapphire ones is the same too. I prefer a more authentic homage.

@@DanboShaw that would be all fine and good if people didn't call the red star version, or any of the other versions a "Seagull 1963". There are countless makers of these homages and all of their owners call them Seagulls. None of them are Seagulls.

I have the ST19 in an MWC watch and it has malfunctioned, the start button resets the chrono secondhand on the second push down instead of stopping it. Start button should only ever start and stop the chrono hand not reset it, that's the job of the lower (below the crown) reset button. Any ideas how to repair this?
@andrewlim7751

I understand that the Chinese don't lube the ST movements when they sold in bulk to OEM watch makers, just send it for servicing and it shall be fine, that's why I prefer to buy direct from Seagull.

i have the 38 mm one of these and it runs +15 seconds a day. once in a while when i try to reset the chrono it does not work. i have to start and stop the chrono again to get it to reset. i think the hands look painted (not blued), which i find unattractive. the wart on the totalizer hand is ugly too. the movement looks over-polished to me as well. shiny and cheap looking. its a cheap chrono, but it's pretty meh. the strap it comes with is garbage, and you'll definitely need to replace it. overall id say to look elsewhere.
