Seagull attacks seagull - Brutal wild life drama

This dramatic bird attack was captured in Traena, Norway on July 16th 2016. I live on an island and we are surrounded by these birds, but have never seen anything like this. Was this caused by lack of food or was the attacked bird already injured and an easy target? I don't know. As the attacker did not seem to give up, I finally chased him away from the injured bird, so it could escape.

Its disturbing to see such aggression from a Great Black Backed Gull directed at Lesser Black Backed Gull. These Larus Gulls take encroachment from any race of gull on their territory very seriously. This LBBG may have raised up on what it mistook as another LBBG, when in fact it is a highly aggressive and territorial GBBG. Some gulls will address an interloper with signals to back off, but other gulls will just attack outright :(

These are two different species (lesser and great blackbacked), so it can't be called cannibal (inside the same species). But gulls generally are cannibals, meaning they can eat young chicks from the same species

Man, that wasn't a fight that was a pure-on savage beatdown! Total domination by the bigger gull. That gripping the beak move leaves the other bird helpless and the attacker free to stomp all over the plumage, which effects their ability to fly, as you could see when the victim tried to fly away but couldn't get enough lift to even clear the steel pipe. Nature not always pretty.

the strongest survive. If all the strong ones no longer had an advantage because someone would intervene with their acts, the future generations would be doomed. Also, the first one was probably hungry. I think its better for an ecosystem to have few hungry animals than lots of hungry animals killing each other. Theres only one way to lower the amount of hungry animals without introducing new prey, and its simply killing each other.

@@davidmella1174 Not really. So long as they are good enough to survive in the environment, it doesnt really matter if they are strong or weak. All the intervention really does is make it easier for the weaker ones to survive, but if the strong still reproduces, then there will still be strong ones left. In either case, humans are as much as part of nature as any other animal. If they cant adapt around us, then they wont last long in our territories.

Lesser Black-backs are not native so in their world they wouldnt have much defense against their larger cousin the Greater-black backed gull. By the way there is no such thing as a SeaGull.
