It really looks nice. The idea with an EDF powered bird came to my mind, when I first saw the video of Troy McMillan, introducing a 3D printed eagle. It had the engine in the nose. I thought it would be great, to have a camera in the head and moving it via head-tracker, like a bird would move its head 😀

I remember many years ago (maybe 40ish) I read an article in a RC modeling magazine about a seagull glider that was used for shooting a movie. So realistic looking in flight the only way to tell which one was the model was by the maneuvers it performed

Agreed, it just pitched up so quickly that I don’t think the throw caused it (not entirely at least). Looks like bad CG or incorrect mix btw tail/throttle like described in instructions. Also, why use 3S, don’t they say it’s 40mm with 2S?

The first throw wasn't great, but unfortunately the pilot didn't push the nose down to let the model pick up speed before climbing away. I think he thought that the initial climb was sustainable - with the disappointing result that we saw. My 2 cents worth.

Think you're right Richard. Not always easy to react quickly enough to catch these things. Easy fix I think. He'll be trying to fly it again soon.

@solentlifeuk2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to say it - but the RUN and Launch shows why you should not run ... everyone makes the mistake of thinking they need to run and then when they launch - 99.9% stop as they throw - but then they are out of 'balance' and models go up or lawn dart. Second launch shows clearly a better standing throw - more controlled ... flatter .. Another item : Dr Mad Thrust EDF's are yesterdays EDF's .... todays EDF's ... FMS / Powerfun / QX etc. are far better - in sound, thrust and amp draw. Nice to see the second one flew well ... pity about the Dr Mad Thrust fan and its high pitched whine ...
@EssentialRC2 жыл бұрын
Don't learn unless you get it wrong a few times. Lesson learnt by all of us on that one.
@megatesla2 жыл бұрын
FMS doesn't make a 40mm, neither does Powerfun and QX. Well, I haven't seen a QX 40mm, but the 30mm QX is absolute rubbish. The best 40mm EDF setup is over 10 years old: AEO bolt-on impeller and ARC-20-34-2 (ARC 130) inrunner or similar that can handle 300W.

@EssentialRC2 жыл бұрын
Maybe a little but the launch really didn't help.
@blackbirdboy12 жыл бұрын
@@EssentialRC True. Looked like his hand slipped. But the way the other glided, I kinda think combination of tail heavy and bailing on the launch contributed to the crash. He could have kept the power on, dropped the nose a touch and built up some speed to avoid the crash. Instead he killed the power, it stalled and that's all she wrote. I know its easy to sit here and assess the situation. It all happens so quick when your flying, its only after that you can say "if I'd done this or that, it might not have crashed!" Good thing about 3D printed stuff, a few hours of printing, some CA glue and more paint and he's back in the air. Look forward to seeing that.

Not truly realistic unless it poops on your hat when flying over. Seriously though, many have tried this before with moderate success... this iteration works better than all but some very expensive university-funded robotic birds. Now how 'bout building in a belly bomb door to drop "fake" poop on targets...that would make for a fun contest and invoke a few chuckles.
