The gentleman that arranged the music is producer Trevor Horn. He was one of The Buggles (Video Killed the Radio Star) and went on to produce for a ton of other artists: Yes, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Leann Rimes, just to name a few. *I'm very proud to say that this track, like other Seal tracks was produced and mixed by my mentor and great friend Trevor Horn at Sarm West studios in London. Trevor and his late wife (Jill) employed me as a **_'gofer & fetcher'_** when I left school in 1980. Trevor spent much of his time teaching me some of the finer points of production values, allowing me to spend the following 30 years as a music producer myself until deciding to kick back and relax in 2014 at the ripe old age of 50. I know I'm probably biased, but to my mind, pretty much everything Trevor has produced, is pure audio gold whether it was Seal, Grace Jones, FGTH or Yes, and so the list could go on and on. Needless to say I think the production values on this particular Seal track are both sublime and exquisite. Nice one JV! 👍😉💝*

"On the grave" is one of the great misheard lyrics. My interpretation of this song is that the gray tower represents the insular loneliness before finding love, and then love is "the light on the dark side of me". Most of the rest of the lyrics are similar imagery - the 'kiss from a rose' has the idea of a single flower against a looming tower, a speck of light in the gloom - and the angst of an imperfect relationship. But even if it's not perfect, love's light shines and breaks through "the gloom on the gray". (Apparently Seal originally didn't publish the lyrics so if people heard it as 'grave' and found their own meaning from that, he wanted them to be able to keep that meaning rather than find out they had misheard or misunderstood.)

I've been kissed by a rose on the gray There is so much a man can tell you, so much he can say You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain To me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny Now won't you tell me, is that healthy, baby? But did you know that when it snows My eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen? Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah Now that your rose is in bloom A light hits the gloom on the gray Yes, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah Now that your rose is in bloom A light hits the gloom on the gray Ba-da-da, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-da-da Now that your rose is in bloom A light hits the gloom on the gray

Please check music producer Rick Beato’s video titled “What Makes This Song Great? Ep. 105 Seal” it’s not a reaction video. He breaks down the song (Kiss From A Rose), separating the instruments, identifying. Seal also appears in the video. He does this to other songs too. It gives you a greater appreciation for the song. Really worth a listen along with other videos.

First time I heard Seal was on his performance of "Who wants to live forever" live with Queen at the Wembley Stadium in 1992. Really nice performance there on an amazing song!

I've never heard this song before, to me, it's kinda complex, but beautiful at the same time...🙂

Complexity can be beautiful, its just that the initial chaos hides it.

It's a song you won't forget. I always see ballerinas dancing to some of this. Could you imagine it on Broadway?

Love is being compared to smoking crack and addiction.

@@dfree1442 It's still complex and beautuful. Art is art and if you can " hear,," there's always two messages in every song. If you understand what these folks go through and why, then you understand what they are really trying to say, but only the artists from the 60s through the early 90s and then something changed but I don't know why.

Seal is a fabulous singer and entertainer, I wish we saw him more often. Seal is a lovely person too. He was "The Leopard on the Masked Singer". This song sounds very Medieval to me.

Ayee, I'm glad you got to Seal. I love his voice and this song was great. As all have said, it was in Batman. He really has an amazing voice! I think "Crazy" is a great song...but you can't go wrong by any of his songs imo.

I'm glad you did this one. It's very different with the ebbs and flows - but really beautiful. Glad you found it :)
