How to overhaul/service a Shimano sealed cartridge bottom bracket. I take it apart, clean, lube, replace the ball bearings and re-assemble it. This unit is a Shimano BB-TY30. But I think many, if not most Shimano sealed cartridge bottom brackets are built in the same way. The socket I use is a 13/16 inch deep 6pt socket. It is basically a spark plug socket. A 21mm 6pt socket will probably also work. There were twelve 7/32" ball bearings and eighteen 5/32" ball bearings. I used marine grease.
Here is a video rebuilding a bottom bracket with sealed cartridge bearings:

Hmm . Sealed bottom bracket sounds good .but loose bearing brackets are easy to clean and or replace . I think I'll stick with the unsealed loose bearings .

@@boracay12 I've tried that. I wound up getting into the bottom bracket 3 times within a month or so. It was so smooooooth pedaling that first day after, then I heard clunking in the frame and the pedaling became crunchy. Repacked regreased hours later at the bike kitchen I had it apart and done again. Was fine for a bit then got crunchy again. Ugh. I wasn't able to used the bike kitchen a few months into the pandemic it closed. I'll will probably never go loose bearings again--but this looks promising! I hated the idea of trashing a cartridge that had worn out bearings but couldn't be easily opened, if that's solved it keeps those bearing protected and it will last years longer.

@@EcoAdvocate I was mistaking ,mine are caged bearings . But they get dirty easily . For $8 where I'm at I can get sealed bottom bracket with the spindle on line . Today I'll look local first . Hey RJ - Your video gave me the confidence to pull apart my crunchy "sealed" bottom bracket to see what was going in there. Bearings were fine, no rust or dirt but dry as a bone. I cleaned and greased and reassembled and it works perfectly! It's a crime to toss out that entire assembly for the want of a dab of grease! Thanks for your excellent and informative videos. Even so, I suspect this unit will not last long after having been "serviced." The "seals" are clearly no longer sealing, with is in large part what led to the unit's demise in the first place. I have two similar units to do in the next few weeks (both original and over 20 years old), and I don't know yet exactly which sealed units they are (beyond that one is square taper, the other is Octalink), but I'm 95% sure I can still acquire replacements in October 2022. Since these two bikes are in regular use and will continue to be, new parts make more sense and will probably last until I retire the bikes.

@@rangersmith4652 - Yes, old beat up bearings are not going to be effective just because they've seen new grease added. You would need to replace the bearings to obtain a realization of what potential is available.

Very useful video, I learned a lot about these so-called sealed cartridge bottom brackets. The fact that the Shimano unit that you disassembled has cone races instead of circular races explains why some of these come out of the box with too-tight or too-loose bearings. They are ADJUSTABLE and are not carefully adjusted at the factory. Also, the assembly you showed looked more like a headset in that it uses a tab washer over the adjustable cone, and then a locknut. This can be tricky to get right the first time, as you demonstrated. From now on, I will be seeing if I can dial in the adjustment on new units before installation. Also, I have come to the conclusion that the old style crank bearings are superior to the unit that you reviewed because they have larger balls, are readily rebuildable, easily adjustable without partial disassembly, have two supported cups (not just supported on one side) and have replaceable parts (spindle and cups).

Harv Woien Not sure if I would mess with a new one. I am guessing they are pretty well adjusted coming out of the factory. You could always switch to GXP. But then you would have to change the crankset too. Square Taper Bottom Bracket To GPX Bottom Bracket Replacement

Well - I guess timing is everything. Just replaced a sealed cartridge bottom bracket bearing set with a new one and spent about $20 to do so. And just one day later, I run across your video here on overhauling one of these sealed cartridge units. And guess what - the one you did is the exact same one I just replaced. So, just for practice and to have a possible spare for another bike down the line, I followed your excellent, step-by-step procedures and now have a perfectly running sealed cartridge bottom bracket bearing set. Besides needlessly spending about $20, it also turned out the new one that’s now on the bike had some less than perfect threading that made it very difficult to thread on the bottom bracket shell. It’s on and it’s one correctly but I pity the poor soul who years from now will be faced with getting this thing off!! Anyway, your video was outstanding!! Just one question - how did you know that first lock nut on the non-drive side was a left handed thread? Was that through trial and error or did you know something to indicate it would be a left handed thread?

@David Sonnen You might have to replace the bearings if they are pitted. Or if the cones are in bad shape, then it's better to just buy a new bottom bracket. But if you have extra bearings available, grease, and the cones appear in good shape, then you can take some time to do it yourself if you have the patience and time.

I was out walking with a friend yesterday and he was talking about how his sealed square taper bottom bracket had been giving him some issues, so he had ordered a new one to replace it. He threw the old one away and then wished that he had kept it to perform a postmortem to see why/where it had failed. Not having seen this specific video but being VERY familiar with your channel, I assured him that you had probably overhauled one and I told him I send a link to the video later that day if I could find it. Lo' and behold, RJ, you never disappoint! I'd give this video two thumbs, if I could. Thank you for your thoroughness and curiosity. Thanks for the video :) Shimano loves to make impossible to tighten things. Once I have disassembled Shimano pedals: PD-M324. The bearings are hold in place using 2 cones like the hubs use. The catch is that the cones need to be tightened inside a tube. I was able to find the tool to tighten them on web, but costs over 50€ (more than a new pair of pedals!!!) and is almost impossible to source. So I have rather bought new non Shimano pedals that are able to be serviced. Since after many attempts I was not able to tighten those Shimano pedals (PD-M324) to proper tension. Ether too tight or too loose. I have also find that original grease Shimano uses is low quality, so I usually just replace it with new, if able. I have also come across Shimano hubs that are tightened improperly (too tight or loose)!

+Herman Dormehl Frankly I have noticed ever so often that the more you go into the details of the bicycle parts the more difficult it is to find just that single part that you need in order for the whole thing to work. And when you do find it in 99% of all cases it costs almost as much as buying a whole new mechanism (which includes that part). For such parts of the bicycle I would suggest either finding a spare part from some other bicycle or just buy that part new from a shop.

I've been thinking of doing something like this for years, I haven't had one like it. The last 10 I've seen were all cartridge. I also thought about getting a cartridge one rebuilt and I wonder how much of a trouble it would be to press them out. I assume the right one is against the body, the left one is against the shaft, so pressing the drive side spindle out splits the assembly in two halves. The reason I haven't done it is because I have 3 spare near perfect ones in the box, and only one of such type on a bike, so I don't fix things that aren't broken.

I was glad to see this video, but my BB Cartridge [Shimano UN-52] is very unlike this one. I found no online help, so a friend and I gave it a go. I won't explain how it's done, since you either know already or would rather figure it out yourself, but there are no fasteners of any kind holding it together. It's a clever puzzle and I will say it is like cracking a code. I'm not set up to do a video so I think it would be great if you would do one for this type of BB. I believe my lbs never does service bottom brackets like RJ does in the video. Instead it is more profitable for them to throw it and install a brand new one. Typical western world mentality. The lbs (in Norway) i mention also seem to throw away new bicycle parts of some reason (perhaps lack of space in store). I have seen wheels, dozen new bottom brackets, and various other new or far off end of life cycle parts in their metal waste container. I enjoy learning from RJ and repairing parts and bicycles instead of buying a new one!

Hello RJ, I wish someday you tell us how to service a Shimano Bottom Bracket UN-55. I have one, i upgraded from vintage to sealed bottom bracket after looking one of your videos. I am always curious about things, i opened it up, reached to the ball bearings , but i did not try to take them out as they were fixed like in cartridge angular contact sealed ball bearing. I do not want to destroy it just for experiment because in my country these things are difficult to find. So just try, if it is possible kindly show us a video :)
@joelzeigler6738

I just did this to my UN-52 which may be built like the 55. Here's the code: Remove the rubber seal carefully. Next is a plastic cage which acts as a spacer between the ball bearings. Carefully pull that out with a small probing tool. Now push all the bearings together. Align left and right sets so they are opposite each other in their races. The balls will reach a little more than halfway around the spindle. You should be able to see that the spindle will almost fall out. Lay the cartridge on your bench with the bearings up and the spindle down. Hold the cartridge in one hand and smack the end of the spindle down [If the bearings are dry, lube them first]. It will pop out on that side. Rotate the cartridge and smack the other end of the spindle down. It will pop out. Clean and lube everything. Reassembly is the exact opposite. I suggested to RJ that he make a video of this. It's a great puzzle.

I hope to hear which torque (?Nm) is used to lock locking nut. I damaged four pins on locking washer. I used round wrench 20mm (fork-round wrench for standard nuts, gabel-ringschlussel on german) which was redone each second tooth was flattened with rasp. New wrench 12 tooth, redone 6 flattened and 6 original. Hello from Croatia

These were never intended to be overhauled. So I doubt you will find torque specifications.

Amazon, ebay, local bike shop, etc. It doesn't break down in water, does a great job, and not too expensive.

Nicely done. Any ideas on how to take apart a sealed BB that doesn't show any lock-nuts at either end? Mine is a Truvativ BB-06-PSPL-113/68. It appears as if Truvativ really didn't want one ever opened and locked everything in with press-fit or shrink-fit bushes. It's the one part of my bike that I haven't managed to get into yet and neither can my vendor find a replacement for. I loosened up the roughness and sticky-ness with a generous bath of WD40 but I know there's no way to get any grease or new balls into it without disassembly. Any leads?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 8 жыл бұрын
Generally they were never intended to be opened. Just replaced. But some can be opened. It might be able to be opened, or not. If you got WD-40 in there, there would have removed all the old grease. You might not able to get any grease into it. But you might be able to get some oil into it. WD-40 is a terrible lubricant.

Thanks! Confirmed my suspicions. The way this BB sounded/felt, I don't think there was any grease left in it! So, I'll just try to coax in some thick lube and run it as far as it'll go. Thanks again for your quick response.

Would you use Lithium grease(white) or any difference with other typical greases?
@RJTheBikeGuy

I typically use marine grease which is designed for wheel bearings and holds up when exposed to water.

Go to your auto parts store and buy marine grease.

neil crompton The end cap holds onto the outside of the cartridge. And it may or may not be tight against the end of the cartridge depending on the model.

On a bottom bracket cartridge that I have, a Shimano, the removable nut looks like it's on the drive side. Your removable nut looks like it was on the the non-drive side since it was under the removable cup. My removable nut looks like it's on the fixed side of the bottom bracket. It's really on tight. If that is actually the removable nut, on mine, which way do you think it would turn to loosen? Anyone?

A 9 speed chain is slightly narrower than an 8 speed chain, so you should get a 9 speed chain.

@Rj The Bike Guy Can you convert the sealed cartridge into a cup and cone bottom bracket? neil crompton It has to do with the cranksets. Different cranksets require different length spindles so the chainline is correct. Triples generally need a longer spindle than doubles.

Shyflirt, how do you disassemnly a shimano BuN52 bottom bracket? The BB-UN52 has no nut or screw like yours to open on that side. Or is that one just for using it and throwing away after it is worn out?
@cup_and_cone

Not rebuildable... :-/ Seems like easiest way to tell if a Shimano BB is not rebuildable is if it says "Sealed Cartridge Unit" on it. The ones that I've seen that are rebuildable don't say this, and ones that aren't rebuildable do.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 10 жыл бұрын
Do you mean BB-UN52?. I found a picture of a BB-UN51, and it looks like it has a little metal cap pressed on over the lock nut. If it were mine, and I wanted to play, I would try to figure out how to get that little cap off without damaging it too badly. Might not be possible. thechosendude, mine says "Sealed Cartridge Bottom Bracket" on the little plastic cap that I press on at the end.
@patwang84
@patwang84 10 жыл бұрын
shyflirt1 oh sorry about my bad writing i mean Shimano BB-UN52 also are BB-UN55 models the same how they look or built. yeah those are not possible to open, there is no nut or cone on them. I guess they are just "trash" after they worn out.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 10 жыл бұрын
I think there might be a nut. But it is hidden under a metal plate that is pressed on the spindle. You can try to pry off the plate and see what is under there. See if you can get the place off without damaging it, or with minimal damage tot he plate, so that you might be able to put it on again. If you are going to throw it away, can't hurt to try.

hey im wondering how i know if i need a new bottom bracket or if i should just do what is shown in this video. All of the forums that ive read about sealed cartridge bottom bracket problems always end up in the suggestion to just buy a new bottom bracket.The only problem i can indentify with mine is a loud creaking sound when pedaling hard, there doesnt seem to be any play when i move the cranks however, but when i flip the bike upside down there is kind of a rumbling when i spin the cranks, but that could be a number of other things too.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 5 жыл бұрын
If you can buy a new one, that is probably the better solution. This video is more for people who don't have access to buy a new one, or just want to rebuild it.

@@RJTheBikeGuy yeah thanks for responding, my dad told me to try spraying some white lithium grease on it.... and the sound completely went away! I didnt try this because the sound was so loud and bad sounding that i thought it must have been something worse than that, also non of the forums mentioned trying this lol.
