How I Seal My Glitter Tumblers Using Water Based Polyurethane / Polycrylic
NOTE: These are water based polyurethanes, NOT oil based. Water based dries clear and will not yellow over time.
Varathane Brand is available at Home Depot
Minwax Brand is available at Lowes.
All types of finishes will work; matte, gloss, satin, it does not matter. Once you apply epoxy over it, it will shine and sparkle. ✨

I use Varathane on my tumblers without epoxy. They seal up in about 7 days ans I can get my cups super smooth.

To start after you sanded the cup what did you apply to the cup before you applied the glitter

Just a white paint . Any white paint will work. Spray paint, chalk paint, acrylic, primer. Just something to closely match the glitter color.

Do you have to use the clear sealer spray paint first before the waterbased polycrylic or would that work just by its self using the polycrylic.

You can definitely just use the poly acrylic. You don't have to use the spray.

Omg I love this tumbler. I am looking to make a tumbler with floral waterslide like this but with a more pail coral or pinkish color and have it split into solid vs glitter view. Have you ever done anything like that and is so please share video if not can you make one ?. You do amazing work

I am just doing a vinyl design on my tumbler and using the minwax polycrylic to seal it. Is that enough? I didnt want to have to use epoxy.

I can't say for sure as I've only ever finished my tumblers with Epoxy. I imagine it may still be a bit rough and not as shiny, nor as durable. You'd also have to make sure to always use a straw. But I bet it could be done.

Can you use vinyl instead of the water slide flowers? Or would vinyl be too think 🤔. Forgive me I’m really new at this stuff. Like a new born

Yes you could definitely do vinyl. The clear waterslide is transparent so it allows the glitter to be seen through the image, whereas vinyl wouldn't be. I hope that makes sense. 🤗

Love it! 😍 Question- I’m wanting to do a simple seal on a Starbucks tumbler with vinyl decals. (no glitter or anything on them) would I be good just using a spray sealant?? If so what would you recommend? Thanks!

I'm not aware of a sealant you can use on Starbucks tumblers or other plastic/acrylics. I've seen some use epoxy, but can't confirm how how it holds up. I would recommend just using a permanent vinyl and not sealing it.

Mod Podge makes a dish washer safe clear sealer. It does leave some streaks. Just apply cure 30 days I believe. Just incase someone else comes along. Pls watch a few videos. I am going of memory of a video from last year.

Can I use the polycrylic water base on a mug to seal a water slide, and can I cover the whole mug with it( from rim to the base of the mug)?

If it is a coffee mug I wouldn't recommend it. You would need a final coat of epoxy to make it food and drink safe.

No ma'am! As long as you're using a water based sealant is will stay clear. Obviously anything left in the sun for extended periods of time will fade or change over times, but I've never had any of my tumblers or signs yellow with this. ❤️

No, not at all. It really isn't dishwasher safe with epoxy either.

They are made on a type of paper that's called waterslide paper. I assume because you get them wet and they slide off the paper backing..I could be wrong but that's my scientific guess 😂
