Triggering are an awesome fish to eat. I prefer the Queen Triggerfish over the gray triggers. When cooked right can be better than flounder

Maria, triggerfish are known to be extremely protective of their territory and young. When attacked by one, swim horizontally because the nest is in a cone shaped column.

I love that we got a full video about this encounter. The shorts are such a teaser! Wondering. You told me these are Grey Triggerfish. Do all Triggerfish act this territorial/protective or just the Greys?
@Seamemaria

Seems like it pretty common amongst all triggers. But I've dived with other species and nothing like this ever happened.

Trigger Fish are NUTS! I was snorkeling in very shallow water in the Indian Ocean some years back and came upon a scruffy stack of nothing much on the otherwise clean sandy bottom. From behind it a Picasso Trigger fish just erupted and went for me. There was just one and he was seriously pretty , so I just sat there as he buzzed me repeatedly , getting closer and closer. I tried to take a pic , but he was moving fast. I realised that I was being the asshole here , so I backed off a bit until he wasn't being threated by me anymore. He just stared at me until I swam back to shore. Sorry dude, my bad!

Triggerfish are one of the boldest fishes I've ever encountered! I've had a chunk bitten out of my snorkel fin before - by a Titan Trigger in Fiji ... so relatable! Thanks for sharing :)

Grey Triggers are cool but they are real A-holes when they want to be. I know several local divers ( myself included ) who have had crazy triggerfish encounters.

What are they gonna do if you start to respond aggressively to their bites? Are they going to be more cautious? Or on contrary became more aggressive?
@Seamemaria

They seem like fierce protectors. So maybe as long as we are close to their nests, they will be trying to intimidate us. But I don't really know...

Not dangerous untill they bite holes in your air hoze/pipe thingy. Not all fatal attacks come from teeth in body or being dragged down. Sometimes the fatality comes from broken equipent.

Years ago I was snorkeling in Sardinia's west coast about 400-500 m far from the shore 'cause I was in the middle of a bay trying to reach the other side when some barracudas started to swim in circle around me... I was quite scared expecting them to point at me and maybe biting. Luckily it didn't happended... Maybe they were just curious about the fancy blue-yellow surfer shirt I was wearing...

So tell me: Were you "triggered" by the triggerfish? ^^ I had a similar experience in my limnology course. While doing my field collection of insect larvae in the river, an adult dragonfly landing on my arm (had a Shirt on). First, I was like "Uhh, sweet. Now I can get a close-up on you". But seconds later that Red dragonfly just straight up bit my arm xD It thankfully did let go when i moved my arm around. It felt like getting stung by a cactus (which i managed on Malta, yay me^^).

Esse tipo de peixe pode ser muito agressivo. Isso é a razão por o seu nome inglês. É possível que estavam a defender o seu território.
