That horse has well bolted, Sean. Education and Training Act has it threaded through a dozen main provisions: eg Part 1 s9: "Te Tiriti o Waitangi (1)The main provisions of this Act that recognise and respect the Crown’s responsibility to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi are- (a) section 4, which states that the purpose of this Act includes establishing and regulating an education system that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi and supports Māori-Crown relationships; and..." It does NOT of course confer rights to teachers to choose one side of a political debate to foist on minors. But that's where we are, because most teachers are quite thick, and can't tell the difference between the Crown as duty bearer, and schools as administrative arm of the state.

Sean, check out the Education Acts - adhering to the Treaty (yes) IS in the Acts. This is why Winston Peters and NZ First's efforts to find everywhere in legislation that the "Treaty Principles" are and remove them. This is a mammoth task and will be resisted and fought every step of the way, as each piece of legislation will need to be re-enacted. They will need to start this reenactment process immediately and not be distracted by the shrill, violent, threatening voices of media-spread fear that is being distributed by this hikoi. This is how you convince people that they are a much bigger group, with far greater power, and willingness to use it.

We teachers DO have to show commitment to tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand! It is one of the Standards for the teaching profession. I have to agree however, that teachers taking children in their care with them to attend the hikoi, is not the best way to demonstrate that commitment, because it needs to be balanced with the other 5 Standards.
@peterrhodes5663Сағат бұрын
Which is why smart people don't become teachers. If parents want their kids to learn all that useless Maori crap, then they should decide individually, and pay for evening classes to teach it, or move to Aotearoa, wherever that is. Don't waste school time and expense.

Please explain. Pointing out how schools were not signitrys, how schools are not the crown, and therefore shouldn't have a say on the treaty. Yet you want everyday kiwis to be able to have a say/vote on the treaty. You are not signitrys (or decentants of), you are not the crown (pawns of the crown). How do you justify this position. Many thanks for any reply.
@tpaine181543 минут бұрын
Could you help yourself by learning out to spell "signatories." "descendents." ANd in respect of your question - you are confusing institutions with individuals. All schools have their own school boards that essentially run them with Ministry of Education apportioned funding. Do you want your children to be discriminated against on the basis of their race? Do you want to have a vote in this? Do you want Maori to continue to receive preferences and privileges based on their race? Because that is what is happening, and they are now complaining about having these leveled to the level of equal with everyone else.

@@argondemad8024 I have lived in New Zealand for 64 years I have never suffered any disadvantage by the mere fact that I have no ancestors of Maori descent. I feel it a great honor and indeed a privilege to be a citizen of a country that recognises the peace, love and harmony as was originally intended when the leaders of the Maori nation signed an agreement with the then recently arrived settlers from another nation. The Treaty of Waitangi was, is and always will be the solution. The Treaty Principles Bill with a 6 month select committee process creates unnecessary distraction and division. This is causing a problem while other actual problems such as the increasing inequality between the haves and the have nots, while exacerbated by the policies of a government intent on fast tracking other bills with very short select committee times. Laws that will further disadvantage the already economically disadvantaged while enriching the already wealthy and sorted.
@tpaine181541 минут бұрын
The Treaty is a treaty - it is NOT the Constituion of New Zealand. New Zealand, like all other Westminster Parliamentary system democracies does not have a Constitution like the US. We have an unwritten constitution which is made up of the body of laws we have. And sorry to say, just look at what is happening in the US. Trump and his team over the next four years are going to commit every insult against the US Constitution, and the bought-off Supreme Court is going to allow it. The Founding Fathers in the US are turning in their collective graves in shame.
