I'm on like my 3rd watch through. The quality of the soundscape, the raw footage, the way he moves. Everything about this video gives me chills. It's like a time capsule to the past. Thank God someone was able to record this or else we'd never be blessed with such footage. Cynic was such a force. I'm glad I discovered them only a few years back. Considering I was born the year Focus was released. This music is just other worldly. I will forever pass on this bands work through word of mouth and vinyls, cds and links. This is too important to not share to an open mind.

I saw this tour as well in Phoenix at the Mason Jar. I was fortunate enough to have a friend film the entire set from the front row several feet away. We did not have this view of Sean but a front view of the whole band and Sean was set up facing sideways. They played every song from the album except "Textures" which was the only thing I can say was a bummer outside of not seeing Malone break out the Chapman Stick. These guys are seriously so far ahead of their time that most people from the Cannibal Corpse base couldn't even comprehend it.

I was privileged enough to have seen Cynic on this tour. It was the most technical shit out there besides Watchtower back in the day so I was stoked to witness such badassery in the days of pre- internet over exposure. It was an event for me. They didn’t disappoint. I never really noticed how much of Sean I was listening to even to this day. From all his work in Cynic to Gordon knot to Agora...now that he’s gone it brings me great sadness to know I won’t hear him play anymore...RIP my brother.

I was at a show from this tour in Newark NJ one month earlier than this was filmed and then one month after this was filmed in Randolph NJ. I feel lucky to have been there. The Newark show was my favorite concert of all time because I wasn't sure what to expect and was blown away. Many technical drummers have been inspired since then by Sean, but I find they still lack the relaxed vibe and love he brought to his drumming. Lots of great drummers around now but enough of them sound a little too rigid in comparison.

4 years later but whatever. They definitely did. I think Jason Gobel talked about how the audience were mainly into the brutal nature of death metal, so touring with CC only partially supported the band’s popularity. That, and the fact their European tour with Pestilence came to an abrupt end since the band broke up, lead to their demise in the 90s (of course until Traced In Air).

Don't get me wrong, the guy is an absolutely amazing bass player. But I just can't stand the sound of fretless bass. I don't see how anyone can like it. Of all of the guys I have played with over the years, I have only played with 2 guys who played fretless...and I feel that the only reason either of them played them was because they saw the act of playing a fretless bass as a way to show off. They both sounded better playing standard, fretted basses.

Thanks a lot for the upload! This band, especially this drummer, is truly an inspiration to me! I‘ve been fan of their music since years now and it always feels good to discover some footage that i‘ve never seen before. Thanks again! On an other point now, i think it‘s so weird to see that they were opening for an unidimensional band like Cannibal Corpse at the time.. why?, just why? They just don‘t fit together in my humble opinion. I guess it was just a matter of “bad timing“ for them to be on tour at the time.. I also think Cynic‘s music was already at an other level at this particular time and they were, musically, too genius and creatives for having simply been part of the “death metal“ scene of this particular era, being related with bands like Cannibal Corpse. But hey! This is just my opinion... Focus was, and still is, a musical revelation, that‘s for sure!

Balkyrthebeastofhell I've been in bands. You take a gig when you get it! While I'm not a fan of Cannibal Corpse, I remember the whole night was a blast. Unfortunately Cynic falls into that genre of ultra technical metal. We all know the fans are loyal, but the amount of fans are never as big as the more commercial stuff. So paying gigs & tours are fewer and harder to come by. Hence the rarity of good Cynic videos! Everyone who ever posted on this video is part of the brotherhood!
@Balkyrthebeastofhell
@Balkyrthebeastofhell 9 жыл бұрын
Charles Parell Hey thanks a lot for your response! You know, this made me think about it with a different perspective and i thank you for that! I also think you‘re right when you say “you take a gig when you get it.“ I‘m in a band also, (probably the reason why i watched the entire video with such passion and why i‘ll probably be watching it again in the near futur just to take some notes) i know that being exposed to people is not as easy as we might think, especially when you create stuff like this with a big amount of complexity in front of everything else, but what i was attempting to explain in the previous message is simply the importance of being exposed to the right people. For some reasons, i thought this was not the case of Cynic back then. We all know that there is nothing worst than playing in front of a non-receptive audience, i‘m just glad to find out that this was not the case! Btw, i was only 4 years old at the time, probably the only reason why i wasn‘t there.. How could i? ..

Balkyrthebeastofhell Nice, "How could I", Focus- track # 8. Intentional or not, that was good.

Also, keep in mind that at this time, this kind of style was very unorthodox and nobody could really put it in the right genre. It was way ahead of it's time. I mean even today there's not a lot quite like it on this level of quality and songwriting. For them to get gigs with like minded bands at the time would have been impossible as there was just too few people that liked this kind of stuff and even fewer that played it. As they all came from significant death metal acts and probably had contacts and established names, it was the most logical thing to take that route

Why not introduce fans of great music to something other, something like CC? Sometimes it is interesting to have a look beyond the borders of jazz-metal fusion! :)))))

And these were the times when Sean was at his best.He was in Death at their best album,and then Cynic,the most creative,original and ahead-of-it's-time metal band back then.The begining of technical death.An AMAZING drummer,very intresting playing that makes you hear all of the song without getting bored,and to me probably the best drummer in metal.And along with Mr.Masvidal and Mr.Malone it's reasonable to make such incredible music

Cynic and Sean were sooo ahead of time. Peter I´m your fan since I bought expanding senses many years ago, when ppl use to buy cds, remember? I loved your performance on Resurrection Macabre and Static Impulse as well.
