I think Dricus can kind of stifle strickland's pressure the way cannonier did. Strickland tends to give ground up to power hitters like cannonier or big wrestling threats like usman. Dricus is kind of both of those things.

They are both powerful switch hitters that like to kickbox. Cannonier might be more controlled, but that isn't always a good thing, and ddp has the td threat to go along with the above mentioned skills@@ahamilton1189

Best breakdowns in the game. Not even close. What I would be really interested in, is seeing what Stricklands heartrate sits at when he's plodding along walking people down. That plus the fact he is constantly sparring, he must feel comparatively relaxed compared to many other fighters.

I'm a fan of Sean Strickland, but I got DDP by stoppage in the 2nd round in this one. My hunch is that Du Plessis' conditioning in the 4th round is a moot point, and will continue to be for the best part of his career. Plus, I feel like DDP's blitzing is on a different level. The amount of ground he covers, the speed with which he covers it, and the precision and power of his shots as he's flying forward... it's just menacing. Very interesting fight, can't wait to see it

This is one where I 100% disagree but I'm really glad I heard your points. Notice after Alex, Sean walked into danger just a bit less. with the big punchers, he respects the space a lot more. and when he overstepped, he was immediately corrected vs a Pereira. Jared he was mindful, and Jared worked his legs much, much more. Izzy is not known for his "power" and I say that loosely of course. He's got plenty of it. But you know what I mean. DDP has finished everyone he's fought in the UFC so far except Brad. He's got the power. and what DDP also has in common with Sean's recent fights that he's lost is significant strike accuracy . Which lends itself to my next point about how effective his pressure is but anyone Sean fights with very good sig strike accuracy, or over 50% and has tested this against top 10 opponents, he has fewer answers in the fight. Despite what ppl seem to think, Izzy's % was under this threshold. Alex is 62%. Jared is 52%. DDP has an impressive 55% (UFCstats). I'm not seeing how Sean "bullies" Dricus when that's precisely where he wants the fight to go - phone booth brawling where he thrives. Sean is not more effective from the pocket - not compared to DDP atleast. His style depends on effective pressure being just that...effective. It requires his opponent to be off the back foot. Notice every time his opponent doesn't go off the back foot... Sean struggles. or sleeps. it's rare bc he's so gd good at it. But Dricus is yet another that IMO will happily meet him. much like Jared. Much like Alex. he can walk down Izzy who has a style that attacks you from range and breaks you down as come into range. without that, his boxing effectiveness is limited. Dricus may not have the left hand Alex does, but his power will be the difference. and the angles he throws from more specifically. Whittaker is a very good counter puncher - much like Sean. Look how effective that was. if you have to eat 2 shots to get off 1.5, those maths don't usually yield a win. Styles makes fights and imo, while I hear what you are saying, this is literally the worst kinda matchup for sean. I would argue sean is truly the better martial artist but he's made to order for Dricus. Much like how Sean was the perfect matchup to usurp Izzy's style. and Alex to izzy before him. I hope I'm wrong. bc it'll mean we learn ALOT about both guys. either way, it's going to be a banger that's for sure.

I feel like Dricus will not get tired, now that he's got his nose fixed. He didn't get tired in the Whittaker fight and that was a pretty high output battle. Also, not true he's never done a 5-rounder. He mentioned that he was a champ in some African promotion and has done loads of 5 rounders. Plus he trains at elevation so I think that will also factor in. I see him catching Strickland with his wild style in the first 3 rounds.

@@Warpathjak Alex is a much different kind of striker than dricus. Dricus style is very dependent on him over extending and moving forward. Alex caught Sean as he was coming forward with a left hook. Alex can do that all day to anyone he wants to. Dricus isn’t known for that and Sean’s parrying and defensive hand fighting is a lot harder to overcome when he’s closed the gap on you and he’s in your face. Dricus doesn’t fight in the pocket like Sean does and dricus gets hit way more than Sean does.

Hey I thought your analysis was the most brilliant of all the ones I've seen thus far! You did show a clear path for Strickland, assuming all things have been equal. I'm not sure if they are now because DDP had his nose operated on and he can stop breathing out of his mouth now. I have a feeling that's going to make a huge difference for him. Although it could throw off his rhythm of breathing and usual pace. I think this could be a huge factor in his energy and Going the Distance. He is the younger man and he is a physical specimen in phenomenal condition. I also like both these guys but I have to root for Strickland! I'd like to see him hold the belt a while longer. If he were to lose I won't be too disappointed because DDP is pretty cool I would love to see Strickland pound him though!

Great summary! What you described makes common sense. If DDP doesn't tag Strickland early on he'll gas trying. DDP has an explosive/chaotic style but it has a cost and I don't buy the nose surgery argument. Who breathes through their nose when really pushed? DDP probably has a submission advantage but the stats say Strickland has negated this against previous opponents. I call a decision to Strickland as DDP only just hangs on by the end.
@Njvghvvnn
@Njvghvvnn 4 ай бұрын
the nose surgery must not work because he still trains with mouth WIDE open and even if it worked.....it doesnt give him a good or great gas tank it would just make it not as big of an issue but nobody got a nose surgery and came out with Sean Stricklands cardio I think they forget dricus can still have a sub par gas tank even if his nose works. You keep mentioning DDP’s fatigue in previous fights, but you fail to mention his deviated septum, even once. Maybe you weren’t aware? He got that surgery done and is now finally breathing through his nose. Knowing THAT bit of information certainly reflects quite differently on his cardio, since he was mouth breathing for the reference fights you mentioned, that he looked gassed in. He won’t have the same respiratory issues for this fight, so with the introduction of such a drastic variable change, the Brunson and Till fights aren’t nearly as good of reference points as you made them out to be. Contrastingly, the fact that he had that kind of output with a deviated septum should speak volumes for how insane his cardio must actually be.

16:15 Strickland has been training wrestling with Ankalaev for some time; there are training videos on KZbin. Ankalaev always says that Strickland is hard to take down, and he seems to be doing well in the training videos, but then again, Khamzat said he had no problem taking his back.
@SwampOperator
@SwampOperator 4 ай бұрын
Khamzat takes backs like that because he's a 1 round threat. He usually gets it, but when he dont he's screwed. Sparring is not fighting.. You can wrestle and grapple 100 percent in sparring where it's usually not like that with striking. And even in hard sparring most people wear headgear. Also khamzat may be taking his back. But dont you think they were doing that for a reason.. you think sean might have learned a thing or two?? Dricus DuPlessis isn't khamzat. Dricus DuPlessis isn't poatan

@@SwampOperator "Also khamzat may be taking his back. But dont you think they were doing that for a reason.. you think sean might have learned a thing or two??" The reason I brought that up is because I assumed they trained MMA based on what Khamzat said, and I know both of these guys train like they fight. There's a reason why even Strickland's best friend, Curtis, doesn't sparr with him. My point with the comments is that I didn't know where Strickland's takedown defense was because no one wrestles at MW anymore (until recently). The last time his wrestling was tested before this fight was against Usman in WW in which he failed, but that doesn't mean anything because it was a long time ago against one of the best mma wrestlers. Anyway now way I know his TD is good, DDP was deep and unpredictable with some of those attempts, but he defended most of them, and he knows how to get up.

DDP will not hesitate to attack from the start and I see him trying to eliminate Sean in 1st round by TKO or knockout. He wants to showcase his ability to be fast on the mark and give Sean trouble of not expecting to be on the back foot which Sean wants to try and dictate with forward movement.

Strickland has that tiring combo of consistent pressure with quick reflex and counter strike, with perfect distance control mentally this is super wearing. DDP will have a few tricks to counter this, like shooting takedowns, grappling takedowns, DDP will disrupt this Phillly shell defence with leg kick and takedown feints

Amazing how in most of DDP's fights that the commentators talk about DDP looking tired and then he smashes his opponents after that... DDP Summary of wins: 12 wins in Round 1 (majority by submission or KO/TKO) 5 wins in Round 2 (all by KO/TKO or stoppage) 2 wins in Round 3 (one by submission and one by KO/TKO) 1 win by Decision (round not specified) 2 losses, both in Round 3 by punches. DDP Summary of wins in UFC: 1 win in Round 1 by KO/TKO. 3 wins in Round 2 (2 by KO/TKO, 1 by stoppage). 1 win in Round 3 by submission. 1 win by Unanimous Decision after a full 3-round fight.

Funny that same thing got said about fight with Bobby, that He doesnt have a threat of being taken down after being there with Romero, Brunson and Vettori. Look how well that went. As much as I love your breakdowns when you watch this one you can feel lack of objectiveness because of how you feel about Strickland's unorthodox style.

I think the x factor in this fight could be the Pereirra knockout. If Dricus can duplicate that power and timing, Sean is in trouble. However, I think Sean can figure Dricus out and out point him to a decision win.
