Quite ironic now that you speak of your love of his talks on Time when that is what is rapidly running out for who knows how many of us. This is scary, even Sean Carroll's warm and gentle tones do little to ease my anxiety about the way things may pan out-this is not like a 'flu virus which dies out in warmer weather, it may linger for quite some time and devastate society.

@@PetraKann this is a good response! Guys it's good to be cautious! We don't want to overwhelm the Healthcare System. So eliminating big gatherings is a good idea But from everything we know now if you're a healthy person your chances of being affected by this are very low When this is done my guess is only one in a hundred thousand healthy people will die from this But because there is uncertainty and this is new. We don't want hundreds of thousands of people who are vulnerable and have serious medical problems suddenly flooding the hospitals That's the whole reason we're shutting everything down People should really read up on what viruses are and how prevalent they are The average person has at least half a dozen unidentified viruses in their body and possibly dozens Viruses are the most abundant part of the biosphere This virus is now a new part of the biosphere Unless it's a low mutating virus and we develop a vaccine to it, it's simply going to be part of the biosphere Everyone's going to get it in their body Just like everyone gets the common cold and the common flu in their body Obviously the good thing is we have incredible amount of Technology both medicines and vaccines where we can combat this But unfortunately because a lot of people are not very science literate we have a lot of misinformation So let's be cautious and not be in big groups for a while but let's also be realistic and see that all the evidence is telling us that so far healthy people have little to worry about with this new virus.

In Sweden we are _not_ shutting down schools for three reasons: a) kids don't seem to be hit very hard b) if the kids stay home, so do their parents, and some of them are nurses or doctors c) or worse, the kids go to stay with grandparents and they die Also, a shoutout to Ariel and Caliban who suddenly find their humans at home, sitting in their sofas and disturbing important cat business, like snoozing and napping.

There's an issue that i haven't yet heard addressed in any media: Imagine after about 4 months, we get over this thing. Perhaps it's died away but there are still a couple of cases a week, but everyone is so vigilant we mange to contain each mini outbreak. So now i can safely see my elderly relative, right? But wait, for a couple of days there in the middle of it, i wasn't feeling too great. But nothing serious. Did i have Corona? I wasn't tested at the time. But now two months later, can i be tested to see if the virus was ever in my body? This seems to me to be a huge question, but i'm yet to hear it posed.

They were talking about that on BBC radio 4. Sorry I can't be more specific. In principle, yes, you could be tested for antibodies. Whether there'll be enough testing facilities in 4 months, I couldn't say.

@Schokland2007
@Schokland2007 4 жыл бұрын
I found this answer on CNN: "It’s easy for asymptomatic people with coronavirus to spread the illness, said Dr. Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at UCLA’s School of Public Health. “Certainly when you speak, sometimes you’ll spit a little bit,” Rimoin said. “You’ll rub your nose. You’ll touch your mouth. You’ll rub your eyes. And then you’ll touch other surfaces, and then you will be spreading virus if you are infected and shedding asymptomatically.” Doctors stress that the best way to prevent getting coronavirus is not by wearing face masks, since they often cause more harm than good. Instead, people should wash their hands with soap and water frequently for at least 20 seconds and stop touching their faces - which is harder than it sounds."

@@Schokland2007 Doctors are lying about face masks. They prevent spread reasonably effectively--precisely b/c people spit when speaking.

What I don't really understand is saying masks don't help. Obviously it only helps if you yourself have the virus, but we did mention prior to that that presymptomatic spread is possible, therefore if masks stop transmissions, as they do, then everyone should be wearing a mask. Even if that logic isn't airtight (and I admit it isn't), one has to contend with the fact that the places dealing with this disease the best, the East Asian ones, all (or at least most of them) have their citizens wearing masks.

@1:06:11 I'm missing something here--couldn't someone showing symptoms go to their local (under-funded?) labs and bring 100 swabs, donating the latter 99? Or stop at a pharmacy on the way and pick up 100k? I'm trying to find out how other countries are testing so much so fast and the US isn't, can a lack of swabs really be a notable variable?

And was I completely wrong about believing that the world never been better prepared for something like this? And can we absolutely not be to cautious about washing hands and interacting? (Before only people with mental illness was never sure if they wash their hands enough. Now everyone I know is unsure.)

Graham Jones this is the guy I watched on yt to get a bit more knowledge about viruses when news made me believe this wasn’t behaving as a virus. I really don’t think this is doomsday. This is a aggressive virus to take serious, but hasn’t the snowball got a bit to big?! Why is’t anyone asking if we need to take it easy? I guess maybe I’m just stupid even if I take this serious. I feel our mental health is at high risk now because of how all this gone down. First news scare use for a long, long time. Then we all get locked up and everything change. People screaming about even more shutdown and military and police to be used against others. Still science ask for even more? When is enough? Haven’t all we done ...made a humongous difference? Do we only need to see who, and what is not working perfectly? (Hey!!! You will never get all the people to interpret it the same way. Keep calm. That is what is important in crisis!)

Again this bacterologist is giving bad information on masks, yeah n95's are uncomfortables for hours, well you may not be wearing it for hours, also touch the mask, with ungloved hands, well you wear gloves too. It is like telling combat soldiers, a helmet is not going to stop a bullet to chest, well yeah it won't even stop a bullet to the head but it is made for shrapnel, or a flak jacket, you wear it for the protection it gives you. It beats a blank.

"we're still in the exponential growth phase. ~2:15" Super presumptuous. You don't know that. We don't know what the cap is, nor how "flattening the curve" will reveal itself. The whole point of "flattening the curve (really hate this term)" Is to SLOW the overall spread. The whole point the entire time is that this virus is going to spread regardless of human intervention. The majority of people are not ready to hear this, but there really sin't much that can be done about the spread of the virus. US hospitals, even though we've been clearly the hardest hit so far, we aren't overwhelmed. Most hospitals outside of NY are pretty slow and experiencing a lack of testing and bed volume. Many, if not most, will get it. And the majority will build immunity. The likelihood of this being a seasonal epidemic is minimal, although unproven. It does NOT have the mutigenicity of flu, that is clear. The virulence seems more severe than flu. It's affinity for ACE-2 receptors seems stronger and easier to access via large aersol droplets than flu's virulence. But even that is unclear. Single strandedness makes it easier to propogate in one sense, but makes it very much more susceptible to environment and chemicals. Your expert is a propagandaist. I could have said more expertise than your guest, and I'm only a peripherally involved scientist to her field, but I've had the privilege of access to the research in the epidemiology, virology, and pathology involved. Starting with the 10+ minutes of viruses vs bacteria.. this is high school level stuff. Sorry Sean, your physics stuff is amazing, this is my field and your coverage is CHILDISH. Maybe the physics stuff you cover is childish to us, and this is karma for us physics normies, lol. But damn, get more involved. There are plenty of antivirals being actively used and ones being studied. Not only are there antivirals, ACE inhibitors are also under investigation for, ironically, being both potentially exacerbating or helping relieve the pathogenicity of SARS-COV-2. The best things that are proven that we can do as a society are empowering the healthcare system (much more than the current bill proposal are offering, only 10% of it is being given to COVID research and healthcare provision. THINK ABOUT THAT! FUCKIN TALK ABOUT THAT TRAGEDY. WE NEED THE FUNDING!!!! We don't need a corporate bailout of another 5 trillion (potentially) dollars. We don't need pennies of welfare dispersement. We need sanity. None of this makes sense. The CDC is promoting fear propaganda, the government is just spending recklessly, the public is blaming everyone while shitting their pants in fear.
@PifflePrattle
@PifflePrattle 4 жыл бұрын
Surely the point of 'flattening the curve' is to reduce the rate of spread so everyone doesn't get it in a short period and totally overwhelm health systems? Surely your not suggesting allowing that to happen. Why do you call Smith a propagandist? For whom is she propagandising?
