I'm 37 and never actually watched it growing up. First Rambo movie I saw was #4 in the theatres. I didn't see the first three until about five years ago. I've probably watched #2 about ten times since then. I do think that Rambo's backstory was intentional. Remember, Murdock didn't want anything found. He approved Rambo for the mission because he assumed that Rambo would arrive in Vietnam, have a flashback/night terror, and immediately go hide in a cave forever. I mean, he tries to call off the extraction immediately after Rambo has a rough landing. And if he does succeed, it would be easy to discredit his findings since they believe he's crazy. As for the looks of the movie, keep in mind that what we call a big budget movie now didn't really exist for another decade. 92ish with Terminator 2. The studios didn't spend anywhere near as much on movies back then that they do now. Movies were a lot dirtier and rougher back then.

I’m a bit older than you and I vividly remember seeing this in the theater. The impact this had when it came out was staggering! The audience was roaring and cheering throughout and as silly as it was,it was still a very visceral reaction to the Vietnam war. It still works as a great superhero film and is great fun to watch. And that final song”peace in our life”by Frank Stallone still somehow feels moving and very patriotic!

This is actually my second favorite. I saw this one before I saw any of them then saw the first one when I was 10. It's just something about this movie I just always just loved it. A lot of people scoff at it for being a typical 80s action movie but I actually think it really is great movie.

I left a detailed analysis on Cody’s review but there’s stuff to respond to here too. Great review, but I feel like there’s a lot of overthinking. If those exploding arrows were real, this could be considered a lot more realistic. Rambo relies on those arrows for so much in this movie. Without those arrows, I don’t know how he succeeds. They are like the equivalent of a missile or bomb. He takes out significant parts of their army. I never felt like it was refighting the war. This is just a small camp, not the whole army. The soldiers are clearly not trained very well. I’m not sure how realistic the early kills are, if Rambo would have drawn attention to himself. There must be some deleted scene where they tell Rambo the camp is empty. Co says it like he should already know. Trautman says the same thing. But we never hear anyone at the Thai base tell Rambo this. Trautman gives the impression that he lobbied for Rambo to be selected. Then we have the famous “I’m expendable” line. Sounds like Rambo thinks he was selected because no one would ask questions if he went missing. Murdock confirms Trautman’s suspicions that this was never a real mission and that it’s only being done so they can sweep the POW issue under the rug. Rambo can’t be the same character from First Blood. In this movie he has to fight to survive. Finding the POWs has to override lingering PTSD. Rambo values their lives more than his own. And he isn’t forced to hold back in the jungle. It would have been interesting if the movie had some soldiers that wanted out of their armies and defected by helping Rambo. I don’t see how he has the luxury of designing complex traps here like in the first movie. There’s no time to setup lots of traps. Plus this isn’t some 1982 small town police force. We could also argue that he didn’t hold back against Galt in the chopper. Maybe he would have taken it out with an arrow or gun if he had one. For a lot of First Blood, he doesn’t have access to real weapons. Getting back to Rambo 2, he needs Co to escape. And even then, they needed those smoke grenades to give them cover. I’ve tried to pause those scenes and trace their escape route. Seems like they wouldn’t be able to get that far away. And Co gets it very wrong when she says “we safe here”. Rambo having time to bury her feels like a lot of luck. Sgt Tay knew where he was. Unless he carried her a mile away and they just didn’t show it. The exploding arrows are the big equalizer. Rambo could seemingly fire them at 100 troops and take them all out. So, I guess he felt he could never be cornered. He was always focused on finding ways to take out large numbers of troops with minimal effort. There’s a lot of character going on in this movie, Rambo just communicates it without words. He’s always thinking. Always reacting. By the end he resolves to live day by day with the implication that he will live a life of service to others. That’s really the big theme of the sequels. Rambo has given up living for himself but he recognizes that he has extraordinary abilities that can do good for others. We see this conflict of views with Trautman in Rambo 3 as was mentioned in this video. The colonel seems to think helping the monks is silly and that he should be on the battlefield. Rambo never says why he wants to stop fighting. The fourth movie is all about self-sacrifice. This is just something that’s occurring to me now. But so far, I’ve never heard anyone else say this. Podovsky knew it though. “If your life means nothing to you than perhaps his does”. Yeah, this is an extremely big character moment for Rambo. Well, I’ve always felt this movie was a masterwork even as an 8 or 9 year old.

I was born in ‘94, way after Rambomania and this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Probably my favorite action movie. EDIT: Also as someone who’s honestly sick of the wink, wink self-aware stuff in modern movies that just gets so obnoxious these days, I did also like that Rambo was internally serious. I don’t want to be taken out of the movie constantly with self aware humor because all that does is just make me look at the movie as a glorified ridiculous parody when I want ridiculously awesome stuff.

I really enjoy First Blood Part's I and II but for both totally different reasons. Part I is a taunt action thriller and Part II is a fun action "man on a mission" film. Both films are tonally different, but they work on different levels. Personally, I find Part III too silly and Part IV to grim. I am curious to how Part V will be.

NOt sure if this would translate well today, or if Millennial action fans would get it, esp with watching Marvel film and such. Haven;t seen this in forever, but when it came out, my buddies and I maybe giggled at the military technical aspect, being in the Army you see films differently. Even modern films, my old buddies either don't watch them or are super critical to the look and feel... Back then we were watching it for the action and such, didn't notice the politics and such. I heard the reason why Sly made Expendables cuz his kids didn't know daddy's old movies, and those movies are almost as crazy as some Rambo, 80s action flicks. As to Rambo able to do all his stuff, flying and the like, he said in the movie somewhere he had all this training, but not sure how much training Green Berets, Special Ops guys get to be able to do EVERYTHING o.0
@JakeRat-xo2bw5 жыл бұрын
I didn't like this film nearly as much as Part 1, mostly because the story for this film was a lot more cliche than what they did in the first film, and it takes a very long time to really get going. Plus, the emotional moments of the film don't really work very well. However, I still enjoyed the film, mostly because when it does get going, the action in this film is very good, and a lot more exiting than the first film was. That's partially because the action in this film has a lot more spectacle, and partially because Rambo's body count is so much higher. I also liked that they still continued the plotline from the first film of Rambo feeling betrayed by his country by adding American villains into the mix, though it feels cheapened this time around because of the dominance of the Russian and Vietnamese villains. After watching this film though, I think I'm on board for finishing this franchise.

18 years old. Personally ranked last compared to the rest of the Rambo series but that doesn'tmean I didn't enjoy it. The only thing I didn't like about it is the female Vietnamese rebel cause she felt a tad bit forced to me. The rest was cool though that last monologue bit kinda messed with my overall opinion of the movie cause we already had that message delivered in the previous one.

I love the over-the-top action, but when you put the political commentary in so seriously, you’re right: it’s not a good idea. Also loved what you said about the plot of this film, which I only remembered when I recalled that Rambo 3 was Trautman’s capture (and rescue). This is my least favorite of the Rambo movies, as someone who loves First Blood I was very disappointed to see the total 180 they did in terms of tone, they took a dark, emotional drama about a man going on a rampage due to PTSD and turned it into a cheesy, over the top 80’s action franchise complete with mustache twirling villains, over the top action and cheesy one liners, when I watched this movie I literally went “What the hell is this?” It was such a drastically different movie than First Blood, it’s like If Commando was the sequel to Maggie
