Great stuff! Classic shanty/forebitter. I've never heard this set of lyrics. Since it was a rude lyrics alert prior to this song I was anticipating another word after you sang "socks" and followed that up with "And a throbb in my head and a mouthful of ....." But it wasn't the word I was anticipating. Also Douglas Adams would approve of this set of lyrics!

Been enjoying your Shanties of the Week, sir. I don't suppose at the start you could maybe put some dates/era of the songs as I guess some are earlier than others? (E.g. you sang this on AC:BF but San Fran wasn't officially founded until 1776, and BF would have been somewhere been 1650-1730)
@SeanDagher3 жыл бұрын
First of all, thank you for your message and I'm glad you like the series. I think this song was on Rogue, but I could be wrong. Dating the songs is almost impossible to do accurately. They were doubtless sung for years or decades before anyone made mention of them. Same goes for cities; San Francisco would have been a place that people went to long before it was founded. Either way, it not impossible that the AC series contains anachronisms, despite Ubisoft's great efforts to try not to include any. All of which to say that I could try to find the first recorded reference to a song, but that would only have a glancing correlation to the song's actual age. I've heard that shanties really got going in the 18th century, and them really picked up as the sailing ships tried to keep up with the steamships in the 19th. That could be the case, but it's more likely that documentation of the songs really got going in the 18th century and work songs have been sung as long as work has been done and songs have been sung. I'd be eager to hear other people's theories and information on this topic. Seán.

@@SeanDagher fair enough. It just interests me how out modern view on culture is framed and biased by out modern world. We try to ascribe modern feelings to older times. No offense was intended if it seemed that way! (I always worry when I comment lol). Keep doing what you're doing!
@SeanDagher3 жыл бұрын
@@BrushQuill Hey B&Q, no offence was taken. I struggle every week with the balance of old and modern values, and how to express them in each and every song. I try to convey the emotions that I imagine the humans singing the songs at any time in the past might have been feeling, but I don't think one necessarily need to express the same thoughts and words as them to convey the same feelings. At least not all the time. On the other hand, I encourage any singer to sing whatever version of whatever song they want to. I think we agree, but I can't put it into words at this late stage of the day.

@@SeanDagher it’s a really common saying! I’ve heard we don’t say Frisco, San Fran, or SF - like, do people think we never abbreviate a long city name? 😂 My only guess (as someone who grew up there before Silicon Valley was a thing) is that there’s some weird “only newbs say” thing that changes every 5 years or something, as a way of legitimizing the people who have been there longer. 🤷♀️😂

Great shanty Sean! May I ask, it sounds to me that you sing these shanties with a certain accent more akin to an English accent. Is that something you worked on or just comes naturally with the shanties?
@SeanDagher3 жыл бұрын
Oh, man. Tough question. When I moved back to Canada in 1979 (aged 5) I assimilated my accent very quickly but I was always called out by my school-mates for singing with an English accent. Then, in my 20s I was singing Irish and Scottish folk and pub songs, and I suppose I learned them emulating the pronunciations of the singers I learned them from. For the last 25 years or so that's mainly the repertoire I have sung. I guess that has become my default singing accent. I try not to use too many non-standard words or exaggerated sounds that aren't in my own dialect, but sometimes it comes out how it comes out and you have to use the take. If I were really trying to sound some way, it would be to sound un-placeable.
