A little about me:
Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his KZbin channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

Guitarist trying to learn bass here, when applying the modes on different chords do you switch to playing that chords scale and making it lydian/mixolydian or do you apply them onto the root chord scale (like playing G lydian at the C chord or switching to C lydian and so on)? because I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks
@TristanDelroeux
@TristanDelroeux 2 жыл бұрын
On bass you’ll mainly want to describe the chord. If you were playing a song in G major and for some reason the chord changes to a C7, you’ll want to play the C mixolydian scale for exemple.

Cool lesson :) I’ve known of the modes for a long time and knew what they were but I never started using them functionally until a couple years ago. I just put up a video of workin on playing through the modes over a chord progression and trying to stay “melodic” I also posted just the “backing track” too so others can do it.

😀it can be weird as it sounds. A student voiced a concern to the musical instructor that no matter how much he/she learned, they can’t master the bass guitar. Student said softly, “I intended to pluck and press the 4th note of an Ionian chord , but my left hand finger landed on the 4th sharp / 5th flat instead .” Instructor jokingly assured, “don’t worry, you were just playing in a Lydian chord” Student continued, “ I also accidentally flattened the 7th notes.” Instructor again assured, “don’t worry, you were playing a Major 7 .” Student confused, “I sometimes change chord progressions by using both whole note and half notes that were not in a chord , like playing all of theses notes EFF#G progressively.” Instructor laughed, “don’t worry, you were changing from chords Em to G by using fills.” Student puzzled, “I have been memorized the Ionian Major and Minor chords , so now I can violate a few?” Instructor replied, “if it sounds good, no one will ever care if all of the notes that you are playing are perfectly corrected.” Student jokingly asked, “have you seen a bassist ever make a mistake?” Both laughing and pointing at each other.😮😁😂

That bass is GORGEOUS! How hard is it to learn bass and would it make sense for someone who never touched an instrument in their life to learn bass. I mean it does have less strings but I’m not sure if it’s as practical as I think. I have melodies in my head but at 50 years old- picking up an instrument for the first time and trying to actually learn to play it is so intimidating.

So, I've been playing bass for 7 months. And people are already saying I'm extremely good. I'm in a band, and have played numerous open mics, and I even did my first gig a couple weeks ago. Yes, my case might be very rare. I also do have an amazing band that is very helpful and supportive, and I'm also very good at picking up skills that have to do with my hands. BUT, get a bass! Bass is SO much fun, whether it be to just mess around, or learn covers, or try and write your own songs. There are so many ways to play the bass, and it's just so so much fun. Give it a try! You won't regret it!

I have a question, ive been playing modes a lot, and ive been experimenting a lot too. And one that ive stumbled across (i know other people have but hey its my second year playing guitar) is when you mix both lydian and mixolydian, where you take the #4 of lydian and the b7 of mixolydian, and play them in one scale, i just wanna ask what is the name of the scale? And which note would be major or minor as a chord? Thanks.

I think it's the added value of being able to put it in a back after it breaks down. If you're not planning on traveling with it, you're right you can get a pretty nice Fender P-bass or something for the same money, but the travel-ability makes it pretty cool :)

Hey love your videos! Could you explain why each mode belongs to the specific chord within the scale. Like why does the mixo go with the 5?
@thisisnotmyname4700
@thisisnotmyname4700 Жыл бұрын
So...let's say that you are in the key of C. So you have C Ionion in that scale. D Dorian in the key of C. E Phrygian in the key of C. F Lydian...etc. So if your song wants to resolve to C major then you are playing in C major/Ionion. If you have the dorian sound/feel and it wants to resolve to the Dm in the key of C, then you are playing D Dorian. So the modes relate to the chord number in the key. And to make sure that you are playing in a particular mode, your song needs to be always resolving back to that modal chord...so it becomes the new root chord. Don't know if that is understandable...

Not a fan of writing music with this type of theory driven dribble (and no, it's not because I'm too stupid to understand and you're super duper smart cause you "get it", because theory and modes are not difficult to grasp). I guarantee that none of the great music in the last 70 years was written with people analyzing modes and theory (I'm sure there was some concern for it but it wasn't the driving principle). If you have good taste and you know the basics and you (most importantly) trust your taste and your decision making, you WILL write great bass lines and music in general. You don't need theory and deep analysis to do it. Trust your instinct and trust your good taste. Don't be a slave to this type of songwriting. It's bound to create mostly robotic and boring music...but at the very least it will be "mathematically correct" music so I guess if you're autistic and into that, then have at it. Most great music typically breaks a "music theory" rule or two. If there is any pattern to good music, it's music that does something different (but still in a tasteful way, because you don't want to go all avant-garde and boor and confuse people to death).
