It feels pretty weird to me how much rng decides this run when you both have the same seed. Surprising to me that so many of those things aren't dictated by seed but by some other rng factor.

Seed could literally determine everything, it's just that they immediately take different actions causing things to diverge wildly. It's essentially the butterfly effect. It might be that as long as they're taking the exact same actions everything is the same. But we can't be sure without looking at the code.

Seeds only ever go for the content, for instance, the shape of a world, not the challenges. that's usually done by taking the time and turning that as an RNG seed rather than the same initial world seed.
