I would build the greenhouse size according to the size of the building materials. No waste or cutting. If the polycarbonate sheets come in 2.5 m then work off that. A greenhouse will help you get an early start to next season. I don’t mind the slow pace of developing your garden. Until next time.

Glass does not have to be expensive, I made my greenhouse entirely from glass windows from old doors and doors from cupboards. Second hand stores often have furniture that is no longer suitable for sale due to excessive damage and you can often take it with you for free. It took me a year to get it together. All I had to do was buy some wood and screws and a can of paint. The result is very funny, looks like something out of a fairytale forest.

I think you should make the greenhouse as big as you can because you will use the space. And it's done if it's not big enough it's a bugger to make it bigger!! 🤷‍♀️

Hi Sean, I may have skipped a video where you discussed this. I want to sing the praises of polytunnels. They are cheaper by a good proportion, than greenhouses and because you plant into the ground and don't replace grow bags etc. Also the plants are more resilient because they aren't dependent on you watering. Don't go for blow aways which are only pegged down. First tunnels and the like are very resilient to wind, doors either end give plenty of ventilation, more than my greenhouse gets. No concrete base and good support for tall plants. Even broad beans and kale inside gives better quality veg. Enjoy😉.

There is just something about polytunnels that I don't like. Don't mind visiting them on other plots but never wanted one myself.

I became a fan when you were on the Rusty allotment. I was thrilled when you took your blue gate and fence to the horticultural garden show and set up a little garden. I watched the building of the raised beds, the pond and the growing of the shark fin melons. Even though I seldom write a comment, I always watch your videos. I enjoy your calm voice, your gardening adventures and your commentary on the valley of your childhood. May you always have good health and a “cuppa” tea just right for the drinking. Mary from Texas

Been sat here pondering ,when i should be really sleeping 😊about this here greenhouse. I personally wouldn't take it right to the fence . I'd take it to the existing foundation bit and have my waterbutts on the side nearest the fence to catch the rain. I like the idea of the wood on the bottom but what i would say is price it all up first as it might be dearer than you think and might be cheaper to buy one. I'd have a seperate door just incase your shed blows up 😂while you're in the greenhouse bit. Whatever you decide I'm sure it will be fine. You might get some ideas for dimensions if you google it. Hubby made mine but it's only 6 by 4 and he got the idea from the old one we had. 😊

I am in NZ so take this with a grain of salt but I would find out the measurements of the polycarbonate sheeting and work your greenhouse size to suit those. Less waste and less work cutting sheets to size. My dear hubby recycled a spaghnum moss drying tunnel house into a tunnel house for me several years ago. I thought it would be far too big at 20 metres long by 3.5 metres wide but I have managed to fill it!😊

We have a local upvc window and door factory near us that puts all their old windows and doors outside for free collection, is there anything near you that does that, I understand that collection is difficult for you. Do you have a freecycle network near you, some people offering free things offer local delivery, we have several free cycle networks near us, check your local area Sean, there maybe free greenhouses or plastic or wooden windows and doors that you could start off with and expand it later as and when money or availability allows.

Hi Sean,l would buy another shed and put it between your shed and the river and get some second-hand windows that nearly go to the ground so you could see the water,use it as a man cave with all the creature comforts including a little pot belly stove and use the other one for garden stuff. As for the green house just build it the same size as what was there before. You could even partition off the garden shed and have your loo in there too. ❤❤❤

My husband made me a cattle panel greenhouse using 3 cattle panels and made low wooden walls to set the panels on for height. We used 6mm greenhouse plastic to cover it and 40% shade cloth over that. (It’s very hot and humid in North Carolina in the USA). He made doors at each end covered in the greenhouse plastic and welded wire screen doors inside for ventilation in the Summer. The design is super strong and very economical to make. We chose the one made by “Stivers Homestead” on KZbin. They list the materials used to make it easier for you to build. Their design has a window at one end but we chose to make doors at each end.

Just a thought - I wonder if shops like B&Q (if that still exists as I haven't lived in the UK in 20 years) rent trucks or vans for the day at relatively low prices like the ones here in the US do. If they do you could also consider looking at free or low cost greenhouses of the size you are wanting on Facebook Marketplace, etc., or maybe even consider 2 smaller ones if you can't find the exact size you require and putting them near each other possibly and then you could use the rental truck to pick them up. I was thinking about this as I need to get long lumber and some other supplies to my house that will not fit in my car and I can rent the truck at Home Depot or Lowes which is the American version of B&Q etc. I would also think about maybe leaving the rear bit to the corrugated fence open so that you are able to clean algae, etc from the roof and rear of the greenhouse and can access the back of the shed, etc for maintenance purposes.

Polycarbonate is expensive so I imagine the costs of materials will dictate size of greenhouse. Old glazing units from window installers are free if you can source them. I would consider getting some big pieces of landscape fabric (re-usable) to cover weedy areas to give you a head start with clearance next spring.

Afternoon, Sean. Yep, I've been with you since the Rusty plot, long before you named it that. As to your greenhouse, it would be wise to keep clear access all around the structure. Not just for ease of movement, but also for health and safety. Plus, you never know if the landowner might decide to take down the fence. I currently am using a portable plastic jobbie from the garden centre, but I'm looking at building my own to fit the space I'm using in the veg patch. Have fun. Veronica 😊

I would say 3ft apart for the uprights. The polycarbonate is very flexible so the more fixing points the better. And use the special screws they sell for it with the wide tops- not regular screws. I expect you will need roof joists/battens also to give some structure for the poly to lay on.
@Angel-002
@Angel-002 2 ай бұрын
That's exactly what I was thinking. You need the structure to be more solid so it doesn't move/bend in the wind. 3ft apart & a framework/battens for the roof also to support the poly sheets. It might be worth a look online for free wood/glass or old doors & windows etc. Isn't there a uPVC manufacturers on the industrial estate? Maybe they have windows/doors/offcuts they normally throw away & you might be able to get some of them together. Imagine if you got a load of uPVC offcuts to build it with.....no more staining wood or rotting wood😄

Factor in the roof of the greenhouse will be taller than the shed you have now so you can stand up and have a slight pitch to collect water. So to use that wall of the shed in your greenhouse the shed roof will slant to that wall. Your rain water from the shed will run that way.between the greenhouse and shed...

The decision about the greenhouse is all very interesting, but I love the little stove burner thing! I'm heading out to the sporting goods store today to get one for myself! I wish I had a shed, even though my 'plot' is my own backyard! My sister is giving me a little greenhouse she got from Harbor Freight, so looking forward to that...her's is made of the polycarbonate and aluminum frame so should be managable. I just have to put up a foundation. I like your idea of a knee wall which is what I plan to do for hers. But I do know how to build a brick/masonary wall thanks to working with my dad on all sorts of DIY projects! I worked on cars with him, laid shingles, helped level the foundation for the family room he added....it was a great childhood!

Sean if it's a very windy site I wouldn't place the greenhouse door so it gets the full force of the wind. If you do make sure you can fix it open securely. You may regret building to the corrugated iron. Those trees behind will grow so you may need access to cut them back. Plus think of the leaves in autumn. Much easier to clear from the ground plus they will probably clog any guttering. Look forward to seeing what you decide to do.

Hi Sean , Over the my lifetime I have with help built 8 greenhouses. Aluminium, and wooden. We lost 2 greenhouses , polycarbonate type on the windy school field, when I was volunteering teaching children gardening. We had to use polycarbonate for safety, in school. Anyway the one I have now it's small, wooden and polycarbonate, it is in my small very sunny garden and well protected. So any advice I would give you is although polycarbonate is strong it is very lightweight, so definitely over engineer your new greenhouse. Foot note I learned to brick lay (slowly) very many years ago, if I can do it I'm sure you can! I've built many a wall.😊 ❤ Sandra. Rhyl

Hi Sean If you decide to go for the bigger green size You could do it in two stages as you said without wasting money by building to the step as you indicated but also add a second door in the middle of that wall. In doing this when you build the second phase you would create two zones one of which could be heated if required. Alternatively removed the door for freer movement and airflow. I would be tempted to leave to door on and to use that back area as a literal potting 'shed' with a potting try, the storage of compost bags (out of the wet), pots, seed trays, fertilizers, seeds etc and create a self contained potting area which could also be used for drying/hardening off eg garlic and onions, chitting your potatoes and storing any bulbs ready to be planted as this area would probably have a dryer atmosphere. The larger area then becomes your growing area with the main entrance into the green house. what luxury 😁😁

I don’t know anything about gardening, other than what I am learning watching you, but I would keep the greenhouse the same size as the previous footprint in length but maybe make it wider and then I would put the toilet where you originally planned for your own privacy rather than elsewhere on the homestead, and that might help with some of the wind issues. But you also know what you can manage in terms of cost and ability due to health so I do think that our opinions are good to hear but what you want to do has to come above what we think as it is you who has to use the homestead long term. I love the trellis idea over the bench in front of the shed window to give you shade out there because that is sensible and practical.

Sean I agree, you should make your greenhouse now while the weather is better (apparently) also build it as big as you can but I wouldn’t go back further that the foundation already there. Have your water butts in the space between the GH and fence BUT check if there will be enough room to access the water from the water butts there?. Price up the cost of the wood you may need as it can be costly cos you maybe be able to get cheap bricks and wood from fb marketplace. You can collect them but by bit in your trolley maybe. Ps I think a verandah facing the river will be lovely if you have space to sit and have a nice “cuppa tea” ❤

Well...if you build the greenhouse right up against the wall of the shed, when it rains the water will run off the slope of the shed roof and into the greenhouse. I suppose you could put a gutter along the eave of the shed and run a downpipe either away from the greenhouse or into the rain barrels. Re the size, I also like the idea of NOT going all the way to the corregated fence, but making it the size that's already there. It just seems a bit large if you run it all the way to the fence. You can still plant things along the fence that are appropriate for whatever sun/shade is there.
@HelenW-w3t
@HelenW-w3t 2 ай бұрын
I think that you don't build the greenhouse to the fence now , just build it to the area you said . I think you can put a door in the greenhouse at the corigated fence side as well as at the shed door side. Then later you can build from the greenhouse to the fence and you can use the door of the greenhouse you already put in on that side to access the extension to the wall. In the extension part you can put up shelves for pots , fertiliser, bags soil etc. the extension could be all wood with a window.

Here in the US the polycarbonate sheets are 4ft X 8ft, so i would make the base dimensions a multiple of 4ft (12’ X 16’ ?)(8 X 16?). I would cut the 4X8 sheets in half to make 4X4, its better to have Them cut to make it cheaper to ship and easier to handle. Leave a gap from the corrugated fence to get more sun in that side. Instead of a hinged door it could be a 4ft wide sliding door. Cheers

Wien I was growing up on Finland we used to have a spring at our cottage and in the summertime we kept our milk well secured in it. Always cold and good! And you’re right, it costs nothing.! Let Mother Nature help you where she can:)

I don't think he can get down to the river at the moment with all the weeds overgrown & I'm not sure if the steps are safe🤔 He has said he will get it sorted but when he's done other jobs. It is a good idea though.....I've done it with wine😉 One winter I had a house full of people & I swept the snow off the outdoor BBQ & table & put it in buckets & put bottles & cans in them.

I would say 2ft esch post for support and the panels are around 2ft wide, but maybe go with a post per width. Sounds an exciting project. Lots to think about but be looking forward ro seeing it come along 😊

Not listened to the Archers since either the 60s or very early 70s. I used to enjoy listening. No idea why I stopped.

Always listen to The Archers when I get into bed. If I can't sleep, I re-listen to the omnibus too :). It's all coming on nicely Sean, will look glorious at the homestead next year.

Thursday morning …. Hello Sean. Things are really taking shape in the shed … having your first cuppa there is significant 😁 Lots of plans for the coming months. Do you know that gardeners tend to live long lives as they are always planning ahead for the coming seasons, never without things to look forward to. Being outside in the fresh air, healthy mind and body 🌞🌺🌻🪴☘️🍁🍃🍄🌾

Use your best judgment about how to get the greenhouse built. When money is an issue, and it is for most of us, making the best decision is not easy. Don’t fret too much about the details. Get it up, live with it and you can always adjust the problems next year. The leeks are an oasis in the allotment. They will be delicious.

Just wondering if you could keep your milk cool in the stream ? Tie the handle to a piece of string or place it between rocks to stop it floating off. Just an idea

I have an 8' x 6' typical greenhouse, ive been replacing the glass as it gets broken with polycarbonate sheets 2' wide so each sheets fits the space of two glass. It's quite flimsy so if like me you get a lot of wind😅 you needs to make sure its very securely fitted. Which of course you would do anyway😮. If money is tight could you build the greenhouse so far with a detachable side. Ie screwed where you could extend it at a later date when you have the cash.

All depends on the size of the shed because if you are putting a lean on it when the two roofs meet

Hey Sean, I would make the greenhouse as big as you can. You have so much land and so you will need lots of plants to fill your beds. As a result you will need a bigger greenhouse to grow the seedlings. Loved watching tea number 1, and I am proud to be a follower from the Rusty days

I hope to have my first greenhouse one day, it will also be my last greenhouse, and as such with a blank canvas of ground, l believe it's position to the Winter Sun is probably only secondary to it's type of construction. Getting the correct angle off the roof with polycarbonate will diffuse the Summer Sun, and catch all of the Winter Sun, and so may provide an extended growing cycle. Being below the frost line would also be a consideration l would make too. I would also probably filtrate my rainwater, and add back an organic nutrient, bearing in mind what has been falling from the sky these past two years.🌧️

Hi Sean I think you will be, shocked at the price of treated timber we have a small property maintenance businesses and we're paying double now and polycarbonate is scandalous prices even a box of screws is double the price now i bet you could get a really good large greenhouse for half the price and you would only have to put it together which would also save you a lot of time also just a idea for sink you can buy collapsible camping sinks fold flat and easy to store many thanks John and Angela

Make an extension to the shed using the window as the opening to it, you could have a nice big window overlooking the water.
