Because once the NZ sex scandal made the news, the disconnect between the fictitious womanising, uncouth Reg Regan and the clean cut Matty Johns was no longer there. To keep Reg "alive", Matty had to be beyond reproach. Unfortunately the "consensual" gang bang made Matty no longer palatable in the female viewers eyes. He had cheated on his wife and was on the nose. Ch 9 had to kill the character off. Sponsors wouldn't have touched it with a 8 and a half inch barge pole.....
