Detention is about a celebrities “earned” duty to always be happy and friendly around fans even when they may be going through something. One slip can be blown up just because of the celebs status. The people putting her in detention are the people at a label who try and control an artist from behind computer screens while not caring about there feelings.

I guess, to me I’ve always *always* perceived it as being stuck in school

@@Mel_faye yes in cry babies sense but Melanie writes a lot of real life adult experiences into her music most things have multiple layers.

Its about acting happy for society or people(family, friends ect) as a celebrity or not

I think it's about scrutiny as a celebrity but also how she feels when she's exhausted on tour and they keep pushing her. "I wanna go home but you say now is not the time, fuck being all alone in the back of the classroom" and "the teachers don't care about me, fuck how I feel as long as I make money, they let them do whatever they want to me, they're the customer and I'm chopped meat" any time she talks about 'teachers' it's actually authority figures in her real life. She talks about being exhausted and being pushed too hard and pretending everything is fine. But pretending everything is fine feels like detention

What I took from "Detention" is that Melanie is saying that she (and other artists) are scrutinised/ make mistakes that get blown out of proportion and get punished. And I kind of got the idea that in order to gain favour (or forgiveness) they have to appeal to the masses. And I think it's kind of like selling yourself to get people to like you again, which in my opinion kind of would explain the more sexualised dancing and vibe of the song compared to most of Melanie's other songs as the only other song of Melanie's that I've seen that it openly "sexy" is 'the bakery' even though Melanie writes a lot about sexuality. I could be way off but that was my interpretation? I don't think she'll only be referring to artists though. She's very multilayered Detention is my favourite Melanie song.

One of favorites from K-12! “Pretending everything’s alright is detention” hits hard beyond the story.

You're gonna have to get used to the fact that Melanie's lyrics have more than one meaning... you'll have to keep that in mind specially when you get to Portals ;) Some songs in that album have triple meaning even.
