You’re so kind and knowledgeable. Absolutely the bests videos about herding. Too much ego and stone cold personalities on others. You have personality & great photography. Plus you pet your dogs ❤❤

True. I saw one video and the shepherd seemed mean. Stopped searching for more. Yours are fun

Your dogs are part of your soul, like mine are part of my soul. This is why you are so deeply connected with them. Wonderful to watch. When we are living at this soul level we do not bow to what mainstream training says, we just do what are heart, connected with our dog's heart, says. ❤

Your knowledge not just of how to get the dogs to move the sheep but your kindness and appreciation of how a dog learns. Not to push them to the brink, let them rest and lots of praise.

That was so interesting, thank you! You are very skilled with training and you teach in a clear manner and straight to the point. You could teach others in your spare time, hahaha😂. You love and respect your dogs, so wonderful to see!! Echo is a smart pup. I loved his little moment of slowly getting closer and closer to the sheep till you pulled him back. So tempting!

It’s so interesting to see how you start training them on a lead. And it also makes you appreciate how much Katie, echo, storm know and how they listen to you.

You're already a master Sheepman at 28 and the fact that you have learned on your own self taught way so to speak I respect you even more honey! I'm self taught on or as at 59 a Wildhorse BLM Advocate Natural Horsemanship Trainer and herding dog specializing in obedience which I just started learning and your and invaluable resource for my herding dog education which on going! Right On Seanthesheepman and of course I already told you I think you remind me of my grandson I hope he will be half the man that you have grown up to be

I've watched countless videos trying to find out how Come By and Away are taught but as you say, the best you get is a hint or two and a link to a course. Many thanks!

Totally agree with you about using body signals when training a young dog until he understands what exactly you want from him. Border Collies are so smart they will learn quickly.

Very interesting, even to someone who will never herd sheep! These tips ARE helpful when training my own dog to do the simple things I want her to do while out for a walk.

i love this. too many hobby hearders use harsh methods and use rakes and other things to strike the dogs if they go for the sheep. i love how much compassion and patience is in this method and if real herders can use this aproach there's no excuse for the hobby/sports shepheards to use the harder methods either. thank you Sean for being a role model and prove that bad excuses for mistreating your dog on account of work or instinct in the dog is nothing but that. bad excuses.

Training my own collie as a search dog so working but not working sheep. Really interesting seeing how you train yours vs how I train mine. Pretty much the same, make it a game and enjoyable. The big difference is if mine looks at a sheep/cow/horse he gets pulled back to me as they are not the task, but if he sees/smells a person they are super excitable. Really impressed by your directional control, Bran will run in a direction I give him but struggles if he is too far (also doesn't have a target to run around)

I have a question, please? Do the sheep understand that they are in no danger from the dog? (It's not an exercise in fear for them, right?) Are they being trained to move according to the dogs' directions? So.....everybody is " in on " the drill, with no threats....like a sort of dance....?

Hi Sean, thank you for sharing wonderful videos that enjoy watching before I go to bed. So calming and comforting! Question: I’ve watched Herding Competitions a couple of times and many handlers use special whistle. Certain tune determines clockwise & counterclockwise. “That’ll do !” is same. Do any of you, real shepherds use whistle? I apologize for my ignorant question in advance.
@JayEichendorff
@JayEichendorff Жыл бұрын
There are "sheperd whistles" that were made for herding dogs, Sean is also using one. I'm not a sheperd but I've seen a lot of them using whistles so it's definitely a thing. They are great for giving commands quick and clear especially over great distances

Sean has a later video that shows how to use a whistle. It may be in the video explaining that " come by" means clockwise and "away" means counterclockwise.

Loving the vids Ty! Wondering how difficult it would be to train an older collie. If it were say 3 or 4 years old to train as a working dog?
