Firstly, Get a Grip is a fine album! Secondly, Martin and Pete, thanks for another fantastic year of these shows! We are all aficionados of a fine art here and these witty and informative discussions really back that up. And if anybody hasn't checked it out yet, Martin's History in Five Songs podcast is top notch stuff! Anyway I'd like to wish Pete, Martin and everyone who follows this show a very merry Christmas!!!

Interesting show, will have to check some of these out. I largely gave up after Get A Grip so couldn't list 10. Did quite like Honkin' though. I think a lot of the old blues men did indeed wear suits though. Hope you both gave a great Christmas and rest.

“You got the right key baby but the wrong key hole” Get A Grip and Nine Lives are both excellent. The lyrics alone display an excess of creativity and humor. Great energy… “Ain’t That A Bitch” is a master class of a song. Bands that evolve > bands that retread and stay in their safety zone

Out Go The Lights is very cool. A bit surprised nobody ever seems to talk about it. I am not so much into Street Jesus but cool that you are. I feel that later day Aerosmith or music in general get lumped together as something negative when some of it actually is good!

I'd really have to go back and listen to those couple of albums. The only song I really like from this era is Livin' On The Edge. There may be a couple of tracks that aren't bad, but nothing that I would regularly visit. Others: Eat The Rich, Walk On Down, Cryin, Jaded, Pink, Falling In Love... I really only remember most of the tracks from Get A Grip and the lead singles from the other releases.

Honestly I'd argue the entirety of Get a Grip was great, ans can hold up with Permanent and Pump, Nine Lives had a few good songs here and there, Jaded and Pink are pretty fun as well. They're not the best band in the world across generations by all means, but man did they have their moments. My 10 post 90's songs Fever Eat the Rich Flesh I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing Pink Jaded Cryin' Crazy Fly Away From Here Livin' on the Edge

I think the success they had with 'Cryin' and 'I don't want to miss a thing' ruined this band because I think it encouraged the record companies, people around them etc wanting to turn them into a soft rock/pop band and generate more 'hits'. Much like the trajectory with Def Leppard as Popoff mentioned.

Art vs Craft Craft is the result of what you can consciously control. Hard work, effort, sobriety, discipline, etc… Art you can’t control. It’s inspired and either you are gifted with it at one particular moment or you are not. Appreciate Aerosmith for respecting their fans and not settling in terms of craft. But at that point the art was simply not there anymore.

Jaded 2. Crying 3. Taste of India 4. Eat the Rich 5. Crazy 6. Pink Thats IT! and that was hard! Most of this era is really bad IMO

You can say what you like about "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing", but I think it's a wonderful song, even if there are better Aerosmith tracks. Is it commercial? Yes. Is it cheesy? Well, yeah. What always struck me about that song is that it was written by a woman who usually writes pop and big ballads, which is the total opposite of what Aerosmith is all about, but here's the thing: Steven Tyler was such a great singer and made the song his own. I think the status quo for a rock band is to write their own material, but in some cases it's not about that. Elvis or Joe Cocker became big because they were fantastic singers who you believed every word they sang, and while Tyler obviously wrote most of his own stuff, you could feel the emotion in "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing". And come on, his lovely daughter was in the movie, so at least you can appreciate the music video. 😉

For me Aerosmith's best would need to include a bunch of tunes from Rocks (IMO by far their best album). A few from the debut & Wings, several from Toys, and then it's a kind of 'pick 'em' from there. So here we're restricting things to post-1990. Pete nails it with "it's almost easier to pick my 10 favorite songs from the more recent era...than from the classic era" - except I'd remove the word "almost". No contest, the older stuff rules. So for me in a way this is harder in that there's less to choose from but that also makes it easier I guess - no need to exclude really good/classic/older tracks in order to keep the list to 10 total... My stab at it (kinda in chrono order): Amazing - started getting a little tired of it back when due to the airplay but since I no longer listen to music radio...Good tune Taste Of India - probably a 'dark horse' pick Something's Gotta Give - ditto Fallen Angels - ditto ditto. Maybe I like Nine Lives more than many... Jaded - again once away from FM radio the occasional listen works well Girls Of Summer - 2002 single Sedona Sunrise - cheating a bit with this one, this was on the 2006 best of Devil's Got a New Disguise but originated in some 1989 recording sessions. Good tune! Sunny Side Of Love Street Jesus I'm Not Talkin' - yes the Yardbirds tune. Again like with Nine Lives I might like Music From Another Dimension! more than many... Other good Aerosmith 'stuff' post-1990: Millennium Countdown 2000 (live boot from Osaka), MTV Unplugged (2000-this is Excellent!), and Rocks Donigton 2014. Also several collections, some that contain a few random unreleased tracks
