This will be a perfect release if they ever get the BBC DVD sorted out. The audio was so distorted I could not make it 30 seconds. Hoping it gets rectified. Nice review as always. Cheers

I bought this album when it was first released ( still have it). I agree with you Pete, "A man needs a maid" is a hidden gem! And the symphonic backing is just icing on the cake. I'll absolutely consider getting the box set.

Thanks for the review, Pete. I actually got this for Christmas. Harvest is my favorite Neil release. I remember my mom and dad each having a copy when I was little(my parents were divorced). Many record companies are starting to do that. Putting the bonus tracks on a separate disc. The 2011 Queen reissues are the same way. Yes, I think that the price of the box is fair. Regarding the BBC stuff, I read in the liner notes to the 2011 Queen remasters(which uses BBC material) that some BBC engineers hid their tapes to prevent being destroyed by the powers that be. So, maybe someone tied to destroy Neil Young's BBC concert. Although, I do remember seeing the BBC concert on VH1 Classic, and the sound was just fine, but the video wasn't remastered. So, who knows. This NY album lead me to appreciate artists like James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and Joni Mitchell.

I think I might know why the audio on the concert DVD is sub standard. It was an episode of the the BBC TV series 'In concert' and the audio was probably sourced from that original TV tape. In those days not much thought was given to the audio quality but there were a couple of engineers (can't remember their names) who worked at the BBC and they did their own recordings on higher quality equipment. There was another TV series called 'The old grey whistle test' which had many great performances and these too have been preserved by recordings made by the BBC engineers as an amateur side project. The BBC has used the High fidelity recordings of these performances to enhance recent shows that have highlights for the OGWT series. (worth checking out both of these classic BBC music shows, I am sure there are some around on KZbin or if you live in the UK BBC 4 shows this kind of thing most weeks)

Thanks for this review, Pete, even though Neil Young may be outside the 'usual' field of SoT music. Big fan of Neil for a long time though my interest in his work waned for a bit before coming back to it with the release of the Freedom album. But this album doe mean quite a bit in personal music history. Other anniversary albums on my list for purchase first but certainly will seek this out. Thanks again for the review.

My best friend was in the "Neil Young is just OK, overrated", I was "No, he's awesome, but irregular" In the late 80's early 90's Neil played on SNL and they played "The Needle and the Damage Done" and he was so blown away buy that 2 minute song he said "I reget ever doubting him"

As to why there's an 8 min CD? Neil conceived it as the vinyl edition so on the vinyl box? It's a 7inch single. Makes more sense. Neil addressed the audio on the DVD and said they're looking into how to make it right (so keep receipts, folks) - it happened with one of the Archive releases a couple of years back and NYA sorted it all no problem. BTW, for anyone just interested in the album, this is the same 2009 master used for the last bout of reissues so you won't hear any difference...but the movie is the treasure here.

"We got the hype sticker... Steven that's for you." Haha. Neil created a near-masterpiece with Harvest thus immediately fled into the ditch (trilogy: Time Fades Away, On the Beach, Tonight's the Night). I run out of superlatives to describe this era in particular of his. Long may you run Neil!

Neil Young, imo, is the GOAT of singer-songwriters. He occupies a rarefied space of which very few others inhabit. Paul McCartney, Elton John, James Taylor, Paul Simon, John Prine, and a very finite list of several others are allowed in. These are the heavyweights, icons, and best of all time. But Young has and always will be my favorite. And don't even get me started on him being one of the best acoustic and electric guitarists in rock history.

Not in my top 10 NY albums, I think Journey Through the Past would've been my favourite song on the album if included. Saw the Harvest Time film in the cinema, it was very interesting (laughed out loud at Tim Drummonds use of the fish tank pump) but not sure I'll dig it out again anytime soon. Hope they redo the BBC DVD with good sound.

Check out the DVD Audio surround mix of Harvest for a really strange experience. Very bizarre. The sound is excellent but the instruments are directed all over the place (vocals from the rear surrounds, etc.) Not sure if Neil was confused, playing around, or mocking the new format.

Harvest isn't my favorite Neil Young album either. There are, of course, some great songs on this album. You mentioned them so I won't. Neil, not that long ago, sold his catalogue of music for a fortune. Whoever bought it will now be looking to capitalize on that purchase. I imagine we'll be seeing plenty of new/old Neil Young releases in the future. Other artists who have done the same are Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, ZZ Top, Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham and John Legend. ( I got that info from Bill O'Reilly's book, KILLING THE LEGENDS. I read the entire book in one day. Absolutely fasinating reading.) Bruce Springsteen sold his own catalogue for $550 million dollars at the age of 72 just this year.

After this review, next stop is Neil Young's website. Neil is The Man, and all you need for proof is something like this, where he shows you what he is all about. Seen him four times, and each show was a completely different presentation. He is always growing and exploring, never standing still for even a minute, much like his stage personna. Thanks Pete, great review and an early Happy New Year!

Like Geddy Lee and Bob Dylan, people often say “I can’t stand his voice.” While I can understand it some with the other two, it’s always surprised me with Neil because his voice is quite beautiful, especially on the acoustic stuff from the 70s. All one should do is listen to any of the live albums from the era he’s released lately to hear how amazing he often sounded on his own with just a guitar or piano.
