great six LP run by CCR. Truly amazing that these six LPs (the middle four which you mentioned are loaded with hit, after hit, after hit) were released from July 1968 to July 1970 - 24 months!! - that is insane!

Kansas are still big in Scandinavia, been a fan since their first album and I still listen to them weekly. Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the bands I've seen most first time in 1975 last time in 2019 CCR were great in Europe lost of hits still remembering the lyrics. Mooody Blues is a great choice got the albums. Got 5 of the ZZ Top albums

Biggest Wheathead in the world here. Yes indeed, Kansas had a long string of great albums in the 70s - all the way from their eponymous opener through AudioVisions & including the magnificent double live album “Two for the Show”. And they’re back! Let’s pray for another string of greatness, with some songwriting by the incomparable Maestro of prog - Kerry Livgren.

I could even make a case for it extending to Tunnel Of Love(1987) which I found brilliant.

One of my all time favourite bands is a Finnish heavy metal / progressive rock band called CMX. They have also elements from mainstream rock, hardcore punk and even some electronic elements. The songs are in finnish and they are practically unknown outside of Finland. They had a run of 11 albums collecting gold or platinum in Finland. In my opinion they had a run of 9 brilliant albums! One of the albums Vainajala ( 1998 ) was produced by Billy Gould ( bass player in Faith No More ). One of the two guitar players actually also play in a Black Sabbath tribute band.

Elvis Costello & the Attractions began with 7 essential albums: My Aim is True; This Year's Model; Armed Forces; Get Happy!!; Trust; Almost Blue; and Imperial Bedroom. Punch the Clock and Goodbye Cruel World were good, but not great. Then 1986 was huge for Elvis: King of America and Blood & Chocolate. Spock's Beard began with 6 straight classic 3rd Wave of Prog Albums: The Light; Beware of Darkness; The Kindness of Strangers; Day for Night; V; and Snow. Glass Hammer began about the same time in 1993. Their six most recent albums are some of their best: The Breaking of the World; Valkyrie; Chronomonaut; Dreaming City; Skallagrim: Into the Breach; and At the Gate. You might say that Riverside has started with 8 straight essentials.

Pete, I think this might be one of the most useful series you've ever done. I think the final list of 30x6 albums would serve as foundation for somebody getting in to this type of music. It would be interesting to hear (in the HM episode?) bands which didn't make it because of 1 stinker. Ex: Tull (Too Old) and BOC (Mirrors), maybe Metallica (Load)
@paulfaulkner2855 Жыл бұрын
Load automatically disqualifies Metallica and I would don't like the Black album too, but it was a huge seller and still is, but load is a bridge too far.. Megadeth would be a better choice.

Journey: Infinity, Evolution, Departure, Escape, Frontiers, Raised On Radio (Kind of amazed how much I enjoy basically every era of Journey's music). Judas Priest: Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin, Stained Class, Hell Bent For Leather/Killing Machine, British Steel, Point of Entry, Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith (So this is the only one I can think of where I cheated because I am aware this list makes it 8 albums instead of 6. I honestly never remember Point of Entry even though I actually find it pretty good aside from maybe one or two tracks. But since I already got it wrong anyway, I'm including Defenders of the Faith since I already cheated this entry anyway. Not thrilled I did it this way, though I don't have enough patience to change my pick). Dream Theater: Images and Words, Awake, Falling Into Infinity, Metropolis Point 2: Scenes from a Memory, Six Degree of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought (perhaps a debatable choice since Falling Into Infinity is usually seen as one of their worst, though I actually quite enjoy that record. My original plan was to do Scenes from a Memory through Black Clouds and Silver Linings but I do struggle a bit with Systematic Chaos, which is probably the only Mike Portnoy era album I'm not really crazy about) Yes: Time and a Word, The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Relayer (I've listened to Time and a Word more than Going for the One, hence why I prefer it, though I can understand why people would prefer Going for the One. Yes did take me some time to really get into since I wasn't always crazy about Jon Anderson's voice for some reason, but the more I listened to them the less I was bothered by the vocals and learned to enjoy them). Genesis: Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, A Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering (Pretty much agree with Pete's order word for word so not much to say about this one).

Just beginning to watch the series so I don't know if you have mentioned Iron Maiden, but they would be my absolute first pick; either from Iron Maiden until Somewhere In Time, or Killers through Seventh Son. I also love Brave New World through Senjutsu, but to a lesser extent. Actually, only No Prayer and Virtual XI break their perfect run, in my opinion. Blut Aus Nord are running on a string of 14 consecutive albums, all of which I'd consider essential, a string of any of their 6 albums is incredible. Same with Deathspell Omega, but while I like their first couple of albums, their last 6 is really where it's at for me. Immolation from Dawn of Possession through Harnessing Ruin. Incantation has 12 albums, all of which are incredible, but I'd say Onward to Golgotha through Decimate Christendom is stronger than the second half (and it has to be split that way because what sane person could leave out OTG?). Sticking with death metal, the first 6 Morbid Angel albums, or amy of the first 7 if you include Abominations of Desolation. Malevolent Creation also don't have a bad album, but I'd pick their first 6. Death of course only released solif gold, I'd probably pick their first 6 over Leprosy through Sound, although it's close. Looking over Motörhead I'd probably go with Hammered through Aftershock. Might not be their carreer highlights individually, but there's always one album that stops their otherwise amazing run from their earlier stuff (Iron Fist, Rock N Roll, March or Die...). Plus, those 6 I mentioned are still awesome as hell! And before I stop, the first 6 King Diamond albums; Fatal Portrait through The Spider's Lullaby.

Nice “cheat” with Lynyrd Skynyrd ! Damn well deserved, of course ! I was thinking of the same cheat regarding UFO, including the five studio albums of the original Michael Schenker era (Phenomenon, Force It, No Heavy Petting, Lights Out, Obsession) AND Strangers In The Night (maybe the most seminal live rock album)! (I also love the Chapman era, but for the life of me I cannot put No Place To Run next to the Schenker albums; it’s good but not great)

AC-DC have 5 brilliant albums but I would include either flick of the switch or dirty deeds even though not so strong just to make it 6 as those other 5 are killer. Or I'd add in the live album if u want blood to make up a super run of six.
@perpetualmotion357 Жыл бұрын
You could start in a few places with AC/DC for a 6 album run. Their first stellar record I'd say would be LTBR and go from there through Flick but I've heard others that really love their first two. Flick is great because none of those songs are overplayed, and I've rated it higher the older I've gotten. I also really like FTATR. I personally think that has Brians best vocals. I'd rate the last 3 with Bon and the first 3 with Brian for the 6 album run. To go even further than that, AC/DC from 75'-90' have one of the strongest runs by any band ever imo. It's amazing how many solid albums they've released in that time frame. By the time they headlined Monsters of Rock in 84', they were practically veterans in 10 years and Angus was still only 29. Most bands who with only 10 years under their belt still seem relatively new with half the material. So many bands back in the day like Maiden, Metallica and others practically conquered their genre in that time frame. We just don't see that anymore. Many get extremely popular with their first 2 or 3 and then seem to fall off the map.
@martymartin2894 Жыл бұрын
@@perpetualmotion357 I would have started with high voltage but then dirty deeds is not considered so good, like wise neither was flick for years, but it seems to have gotten more popular over time. That's why I'd probably start at for those about to rock and go back 6 with the inclusion of if u want blood for 6 really great albums.
@MichaelMajoris Жыл бұрын
ACDC definitely! For me I go by their original studio releases. I like their 1975 Australian High Voltage a lot, but I would start with their 2nd Australian Album TNT and go thru Back in Black. TNT Dirty Deeds (Australian or regular release) Let There Be Rock (with or without Crabsody in Blue) Powerage (with or without Cold Hearted Man) Highway To Hell Back in Black As mentioned could throw any live CD in there from that period like If You Want Blood or any of the unofficial live recording like 78 Live from Nashville, etc. I like For Those About To Rock and Flick of the Switch a lot too. Brian sounds amazing on both. And Flick is so raw, just needed a few more 'great' songs instead of just ok ones. For me, the two ACDC's are when Phil is on drums or not. I do like Black Ice very much too from 2008.
@martymartin2894 Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelMajoris cool, I didn't really like black ice when it came out maybe I need to revisit that album, I liked ballbreaker best out of them later albums even though razors edge was an epic comeback with 5 great songs the others are awful. If you include a live album, then you need to include Live at Leeds and give The Who a six run (four truly great Tommy, Live at Leeds, Who's Next, and Quadrophenia). I forgot to write down my 5 choices in part 3, so for part 4 I'm doing 10! 11. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - from The Good Earth (1974) to Chance (1980). And possibly including first four albums and Somewhere In Afrika to make an 11 album run! And I excluded Solar Fire, because Chance is vastly underrated. A very fresh, original early 80s sound. 12. Opeth - from Ghost Reveries (2005) to In Cauda Venenum (2019). I'm a massive fan of later Opeth works. I needed to have Heritage, Pale Communion, In Cauda Venenum in the same run. Even at the cost of excluding Damnation and other earlier albums. 13. Depeche Mode - from Music For The Masses (1987) to Playing The Angel (2005). Quite an unusual choice by me, picking a bit more later DM albums. But I'm a bit underwhelmed by Black Celebration, for me Music For The Masses is the first great Depeche album. 14. Dream Theater - from Images And Words (1992) to Train of Thought (2003). Exactly six albums, no more than that. Octavarium for me is a slip. And many people might not pick DT just because of Falling Into Infinity. Well, Falling Into Infinity might be one of the most underrated prog metal albums of all time! 15. Supertramp - from Crime of the Century (1974) to Brother Where You Bound (1985). Although the last one is without Hodgson, it's still a very strong album. 16. The Who - from The Who Sell Out (1967) to Who Are You (1978). One of the best classic rock streaks of all time. The Who By Numbers is very underrated. 17. Grand Funk Railroad - from Grand Funk (1969) to We're An American Band (1973). And I would actually continue up to Good Singin', Good Playin', I guess. 18. Bjork - from Debut (1993) to Volta (2007). Simply a treasury of experimental art pop. Post and Vespertine are my favorites. 19. ZZ Top - from Tres Hombres (1973) to Eliminator (1983). Here I wanted to disagree with Pete. I like first two albums, but for me El Loco and Eliminator must be in the run. I find El Loco quite underrated these days. 20. Kansas - from debut (1974) to Monolith (1979). Despite repeating the same what Pete said, I needed to include this, because this is a very good run! Monolith and Masque are very underrated. Mentioned in previous episodes: 1. Van der Graaf Generator: from The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other to World Record. 2. Gentle Giant: from Acquiring The Taste to Free Hand. 3. King Crimson: from Larks' Tongues In Aspic to Three of a Perfect Pair. 4. Peter Hammill: Fool's Mate to Over. 5. Fates Warning: No Exit to Disconnected. 6. Pain of Salvation: from Entropia to Scarsick. 7. Camel: from debut to Breathless. 8. Anekdoten: from Vemod to Until All The Ghosts Are Gone. 9. Cosmograf: from When Age Has Done Its Duty to Mind Over Depth. 10. Pink Floyd: from Meddle to The Wall.

Love Supertramp but Famous last words is a poor album so breaks the chain of brilliant albums

@@christopherdavies3079 Disagree. I like Famous Last Words more than even Crisis What Crisis. Very strong melodic songs on FLW.

@@einarassipavicius1991 I think you’re on your own holding that opinion It was bad enough to split the band up .

@@christopherdavies3079 Well, that's simply not a very rational opinion. Just because you hate the album and it was the last album before Hodgson left doesn't mean: a) it's a bad album b) it provoked Hodgson to leave. Hodgson left, because he didn't want to be one of TWO leaders. He realized he wanted to create on its own. And also, he lived at the time a few hundred kilometers away from the rest of the band, which made working together more difficult. It was clear even before the creation of FLW, that Hodgson will leave the band. And I know many people who like the album just as much as me. Just because on average it wasn't received nowhere near as well as Breakfast In America, doesn't mean it's immediately a poor offering. It simply is in the shadow of Breakfast In America.

@@einarassipavicius1991 The clue is in the title “ Top 6 album runs “ So to quote you “ Famous last words was a shadow of Breakfast in America “ so how can FLW be possibly be part of a run of 6 consecutive albums made by a band or artist, if it’s not top quality which is what this subject is about ? I rest my case there members of the jury ……. Lol

Dream Theater will be interesting

Now that you mention it, yes, absolutely. I assume Pete wants to include Images And Words, but not sure if Falling Into Infinity is strong enough for him to include in the run. If not, he could go for Metropolis Pt.2 - Black Clouds & Silver Linings. But is he that fond of each of those six? And what about When Dream And Day Unite? It is my favorite Dream Theater album, and in his DT album ranking Pete said he loves the songs, but wasn't happy with the sound and singer. However, Six Degrees was ranked higher than the debut. So there you go, no debut unfortunately. So everything depends on how big his love for Falling Into Infinity is then. And whether he wants to include the A Change of Seasons EP.
