XTC could qualify for a great nine album run from Drums and Wires to Apple Venus Vol. 1. If I had to pick my six I'd probably start with Mummer ending with Apple Venus Vol. 1, but really any combination would work. If we're allowed to ignore album sales and just go by sheer quality and consistency, Sloan arguably had a great eight album run from Smeared to Never Hear the End of It. If I had to pick six, I'd start with One Chord to Another just to be sure to include Never Hear the End of It which is an absolute all-time classic double album.

Van Halen - VH1 through 1984. I love the Hagar years, I love A Different Kind of Truth, hell I even like a good amount of VH3... But that six album run with Diamond Dave is just absolutely incredible. A party band at it's finest. Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties through Fire of Unknown Origin. I love every BOC album. Secret Treaties is probably my favorite. Cultosaurus and Fire would probably be my 2nd and third. Mirrors is an incredible album. Highly underrated. Lonely Teardrops might as well be my favorite BOC song (alongside Hot Rails from Hell). Agents of Fortune and Spectres are my least favorite albums from the classic BOC period (everything before Revolution by Night), but I adore them as well. BOC is a band that should've been way bigger than they were. So much great music on every album if you ask me. Black Sabbath - Never Say Die through The Eternal Idol. A bit of a weird choice, I know, but these albums mean so much to me. Never Say Die is one of my favorite Sabbath albums. The Dio albums are masterful. Born Again is my #1 favorite Sabbath album. Seventh Star is a killer second half to Sabbath's "Deep Purple" era. The Eternal Idol is an amazing album with jaw dropping vocals from Tony Martin. All in all, it really does hurt leaving out the first 6 Sabbath albums, as that's an incredible run too, but for Never Say Die and Born Again alone, I had to go this route. Styx - Man of Miracles through Cornerstone. Styx is my favorite band. I agree with your Styx picks Pete, but I would start with Man of Miracles instead of Equinox, since Man of Miracles is my favorite Styx album. Ted Nugent - Debut through Scream Dream. Way too classic. Those classic Nugent albums have so much attitude to them. I like many of the albums he did after Scream Dream, but for me this is a no-brainer. Don't like Nugent as a person, but that doesn't matter. He made some of the finest classic heavy rock albums.

@@miketheyunggod2534 I personally really like it. That’s one of my unpopular music opinions. The album everybody hates and you love. It’s by no means the best they ever did, but I don’t view it nearly as bad as many people. I know there’s a lot of covers and random short little ditties but I really don’t mind those. An album having several covers isn’t a negative for me and for whatever reason, the short little ditties add a sort of charm to the album for me. To me, it’s just a really FUN album. To me, I love FUN albums and that’s always been part of the appeal to Van Halen for me. They’re just a really fun band to listen to. Awesome musicianship, swagger, attitude, party atmosphere in the songs, just very entertaining to listen to. But ok let’s go track by track. Where have all the good times gone is a really good cover. Hang ‘Em High is a great classic fast VH tune. Cathedral’s really the one song or short little thing that doesn’t do anything for me on the album. Secrets is pretty solid, I’d say a 7/10. I really like the drum sound on the song and DLR sings a little different on the song, pretty soft and I think it works well. Intruder and Pretty Woman I consider one song. That’s killer. To me that’s just a really FUN song. Same with Dancing in the Street. I know that song in particular gets a LOT of shit from people and I completely understand and see why, but there’s just a really FUN, lighthearted party atmosphere to that tune. Like I said, I know it gets a TON of shit because lots of people point to that tune as the song that led to all the keyboard usage and helped create the split between DLR and EVH and those are fair points, but I personally just love that song. Little Guitars intro and the song I consider one but I will address Little Guitars intro, as that belongs in the conversation for best instrumentals EVH ever did. I love the start of Little Guitars. How the main riff starts. Not my favorite song out there, but still pretty good. A 6.5 out of 10 or so. In my opinion, you can have a couple not amazing songs and still have a drop dead classic album. Look at the Cars’ debut. I think everyone would call that a stone cold classic. But let’s be honest. I’m In Love With Your World is AWFUL. So anyway, back to Diver Down. Big Bad Bill. I don’t know why, but I absolutely love that song. It’s got a fun energy to it and I really like the change of pace and different musical genre it is. It’s got a very catchy swing to it. Full Bug is absolutely without a doubt one of their best and most underrated songs. Absolutely KILLER track. It’s in my top 10 VH songs. Fast, heavy, raucous, raunchy, just absolutely great. And Happy Trails is just an amusing little send off to close the album. So while it’s not my favorite album of theirs by any means, I still personally love the album. To each their own though, like I said, I completely understand why people don’t like the album, it’s just for me, those cons that people point to (lots of covers and small little things) don’t bring the album down for me and I don’t mind. The album is definitely a little scattered at times and has lots of different types of songs going on, but for whatever reason, it really works for me. But like I said, to each their own 🍻 Oh also someone pointed this out on Reddit and thinking about it, I would agree. The mixing is done really well and it’s a really loud album. You can really CRANK this album and play it loud

Thanks for your videos, Pete. This is a fun idea! I have to say, when I first heard you mention this series I thought "I bet the number 6 was decided because of Black Sabbath." Nice to be right every now and then. Uriah Heep will fit this well, too. Probably debut through Sweet Freedom.
@maurizio120412 жыл бұрын
Good stuff Pete! Gotta include Kiss from their debut to Love Gun, and Aerosmith from their debut to Draw The Line. I'm guessing you're looking at BOC too. They're a little tricky... Secret Treaties, Agents, Spectres, Mirrors, Cultosaurus, Fire of Unknown Origins. Purple isn't a slam dunk because of Who Do We Think We Are. VH isn't a slam dunk because of Diver Down.

Hi there Pete ! Really enjoying your videos, I have specifically been re-introduced to Uriah Heep and Thin Lizzy thanks to my recent binge if your channel haha. My Dad was born in 59' so he has a huge record collection and was a prog nut so all the tull, genesis, yes, crimson anyone could ever want on 70s and 80s canadian pressings. He was never into Heep though and I had never heard a single full album before so wow I am getting into them now what a treat. Also the thin lizzy live album has blown me away (they are just so freakin' tight live) so that's been great (I only have fighting and Jailbreak on vinyl so far) - I noticed you are a cd guy- is your collection entirely cds and no wax? If so why? My dad is now converted to cds exclusively.... so more vinyl for me. ALSO: 6 great album run... Jethro has to be in video 3 4 or 5 haha (my fave band of all time) cheers man thanks for the entertainment eh!

Some fine 6 album runs for sure! The Sabbath "classic 6" leading the way! As a day 1 Rush fan who's bought everything as tthey came out, my run is slightly different: Fly By Night through to Permanent Waves. I was just OK with Moving Pictures and that seems to get the most love, where many consider side 1 to be the 'perfect side' of Rush, but for me that's always been side 1 of the brilliant A Farewell To Kings. The Stones 6 pack right on the money. The Mick Taylor years were my fave as well. And for Zep I'm going II through Presence only to qualify for the 6 in a row but really it's 7 classics including the 1st one, yes? 😊🎶 Expect to see the Moody Blues coming up Days of Future Passed through to Every Goog Boy Deserves Favour, and especially Genesis Foxtrot through to Wind And Wuthering. Thanks Pete!

Not sure I could come up with 25 bands for this. A six album streak of near flawless albums is a high bar indeed. I agree 100% on Rush, Zeppelin and Sabbath. Those six you picked for those bands are the meat and potatoes of their respective catalogs. Not a clunker in the bunch. I love the first four Stones albums you picked, but Goat's Head Soup and It's Only Rock and Roll were never quite on that same level as the other four for me. Same with Styx. Beatles would definitely be in there for me. Possibly Tull, but War Child is debatable.

Great show idea, I've thought about this topic many times mostly because of Zepp and Sabbs I'd pick the same runs for the Stones, Zepp, Sabbs, and Rush. Never really dove into Styx so my other run will be Neil Young: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush, Harvest, Time Fades Away (live), On the Beach, Tonight's the Night... but if we don't count TFA because it's live then continue through Zuma.

This should be interesting. Pete may convince me of others like the Stones this evening. But here are the first five on my list which contains what I know many of you will think are weird ones. 1. AC/DC - the first six, so up through Back in Black. 2. Atlanta Rhythm Section - Third Annual Pipe Dream thru Underdog 3. Black Sabbath - first six 4. Camel - first six 5. Cosmograf - When Age Has Done Its Duty thru Mind Over Depth That last one may be a push, but I really like those albums. Can't wait until next time to see what else Pete has!
@einarassipavicius19912 жыл бұрын
Cosmograf!!! Not everyday I see people mentioning Cosmograf. This run is spectacular. And Rattrapante is a great 7th after these six. Not sure about Heroic Materials though, it didn't move me that much. But it's still a new album, my opinion might change.
@wolf19772 жыл бұрын
No Stones for me because of Exile, not a fave of mine. I know many LOVE this album, for me it's OK at best. If not for that one they'd be on this list with: Satanic Majesties - It's Only R'n'R

Horslips put together a great 6 album run, from the debut "Happy to meet, sad to part", "The Tain", my absolute fave "Dancehall Sweethearts", "The Unfortunate cup of tea" which is not far behind, "Drive the cold winter away" and "The Book of Invasions." They were Celtic rock pioneers in a way that Fairport Convention weren't yet they are so underrated and barely known on a world scale. But I don't care, I've been digging them for 32 years and hopfully will for the next 32 !

I went through my collection. There are less bands that you would think with such a streak. Amorphis Silent Waters - Halo (yes these are 7, can't decide) Beach Boys Pet Sounds - Surfs Up (Carl & The Passion is also great, but I cannot leave out Pet Sounds) Beatles Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Peppers, Magical Mystery, The Beatles ,Abbey Road (I left out Yellow Submarine as a soundtrack) The Doors The Doors - LA Woman Dream Theater Six Degrees - Black Clouds (it hurts to leave out Images and Awake. But Falling into infinity is abyssmal) Enslaved Mardraum, Monumension, Below The Lights, Isa, Ruun, Vertebrae Insomnium Since The Day it all came down, Above the weeping world, Across The Dark, One for Sorrow, Shadows of the Ding Sun, Winter's Gate King Crimson Lizard, Islands, Lark's Tongues, Red, Starless, Discipine (wanted to take the debut, but don't like Poseidon) Led Zeppelin I - Physical Graffiti (The did this run in only 6 years, whil constantly touring. This is crazy!) Marillion Script - Holidays (Brave and Afraid of Sunlight make this the best 8 album run in Prog history) Neil Young Everybody Knows - Zuma Obscura Retribution - A Valediction Opeth My Arms, Your Hearse - Ghost Reveries Pearl Jam Ten - Binaural Peter Gabriel II - Up Pink Floyd Atom Heart Mother - The Wall (would like to start with Piper or Saucerful, but Ummagumma is Crap) Porcupine Tree Stupid Dream - The Incident Queen II - Jazz R.E.M. Document - New Adventuresin Hi-Fi Rolling Stones Between The Buttons - Exile on Main Street (I prefer the early stuff over the 70s) Yes The Yes Album - Going for the One ZZ Top Rio Grande Mud - El Loco Iron Maiden and Sabbath don't make the cut. I don't like Killers. And the Sabbath Debut is also not on the same level as the next few And I'm 100% sure that Khemmis will join my list with the next album.

Looking back at my updated 6 album run piece in Mar 2021, I'd actually mentioned a SoT episode on "Bands that released three or more classics in a row." Glad to see you upped the ante to 6, it's kind of a magic number in my book, though not as rare of an achievement as I initially thought, at least once Bowie's Diamond Dogs grew on me, heh. My all-time is: 1. Sabbath: 1st 6 2. Beatles: Help! - Abbey (or Rubber Soul and include Magical MT) 3. Led Zeppelin: 1st 6 4. Bob Marley: Catch a Fire - Kaya 5. XTC: Drums - Skylarking 6. Funkadelic: 1st 6 7: Free: All 6 8. Iron Maiden: 1st 6 Free are somehow underdogs even though many bands cited them as a major influence, like Lynyrd Skynyrd and even Gang of Four. My 21st Century list includes Colour Haze, Motorpsycho, Elder, Radiohead, Ufomammut, Causa Sui, Papir. Elder and also The Black Angels are new to the club as of last year. Looking forward to 6th albums from Truckfighters, Graveyard, Unce Acid, TVOTR, Tool and Baroness too.

@@Fastnbulbous1969 Haha - it's posted here...Someone else said they couldn't see it even though I can. Here it is (again): Assuming we're only counting studio albums or best of comps...Some great bands don't qualify (for me): Allmans, Doobies, Floyd, Talking Heads, Crimson, Skynyrd, Spirit, Traffic, Yes, Stones, Aerosmith, Bowie, Be Bop Deluxe, Clapton, Brand X, Stephen Stills. I'm a little on the fence with Queen... Some of mine: Beatles = Meet The Beatles - Sgt Peppers (11 straight), or start at Beatles '65 if you like (that makes 7 straight). This is based on US albums The Who = Who Sell Out - Who Are You (6 straight) (Dixie) Dregs = Free Fall - Full Circle (7 straight) Elton John = Tumbleweed Connection - Rock Of The Westies (8 straight) Fleetwood Mac = Kiln House - Rumours (8 straight). Fleetwood Mac in Chicago (1969) 'ruins' the string that could've been one/two albums longer Flower Kings = Retropolis - By Royal Decree (14 straight). Pete won't pick this The Doors = s/t - LA Woman (6 straight) Bad Company = Bad Co - Rough Diamonds (6 straight) Genesis = Nursery Cryme - Genesis/1983 (10 straight) Grateful Dead = Aoxomoxoa - Shakedown Street (9 straight) Jefferson Airplane = Jefferson Airplane Takes Off - s/t 1989 (8 straight) Jethro Tull = Too Old - Roots to Branches (11 straight) Kinks = Everybody's in Show-Biz - Low Budget (8 straight). Muswell Hillbillies breaks an even longer string... Led Zep = LZ I - In Through The Out Door (8 straight) Little Feat = Little Feat - Times Loves A Hero (6 straight) Santana = Santana - Beyond Appearances (13 straight) Spock's Beard = The Kindness of Strangers - s/t 2006 (7 straight). Again won't be a Pete pick Steely Dan = Can't Buy A Thrill - Aja (6 straight) Ten Years After = s/t - Positive Vibrations (8 straight) Thin Lizzy = Vagabonds - Thunder And Lightning (10 straight) Al DiMeola = Land of the Midnight Sun - Scenario (6 straight) Jeff Beck = Truth - There and Back (8 straight) Beach Boys = Friends - Holland (6 straight) Deep Purple = In Rock - Come Taste the Band (7 straight) Van Halen = s/t - Balance (10 straight) Derek Sherinian - Inertia - Vortex (8 straight) James Gang = Yer Album - Miami (7 straight). A little bit of a 'cheat', this band changed A LOT (like DP) Gary Moore = Back On The Streets - After Hours (9 straight). Not including G Force, Skid Row etc Paul McCartney = Red Rose Speedway - Back To The Egg (6 straight). Macca solo + Wings Joe Walsh = Barnstorm - There Goes The Neighborhood (6 straight) Queen = s/t - News Of The World (6 straight) Steve Morse = The Introduction - Major Impacts 2 (11 straight) Peter Frampton = Wind Of Change - Art Of Control (8 straight). Pete definitely won't pick this... Ronnie Montrose = Open Fire - Mr Bones (7 straight) Rush = Fly By Night - Clockwork Angels (18 straight). I think they take the title! Saga = Worlds Apart - The Security of Illusion (6 straight) Humble Pie = As Safe As Yesterday Is - Thunderbox (7 straight) Robin Trower = Twice Removed - Back It Up (8 straight)

For me, for Rush it's a run of 8+2 albums: Grace under Pressure and Power Windows continue the sequence of their great albums well into 80s, while Caress of Steel at one side and Hold Your Fire at the other side, although not that great maybe, but still very solid ones which I also revisit regularly. And... Of course, Presence! :) it only gets better and better with time for me.

My picks are going to be prog rock focused Renaissance: Prologue (1972) - A Song for All Seasons (1978). Love the beautiful vocals and tremendous music. What a run. Genesis: Nursery Cryme (1971) - Wind & Wuthering (1976). It’s really a 9 album run of greatness for me from Trespass to Duke, but for this exercise I had to cut it. Rush: 2112 (1976) - Signals (1982). Again everything from the debut through Power Windows is great, but these 6 are the best in a row even though I think Grace is better than Signals. Yes: The Yes Album (1971) - Going for the One (1977). Awesome run of prog masterpieces that each offer the listener something really unique and interesting to latch onto. First two albums are great as well, but not quite as great as the 6 that followed (Although I don’t think there’s a huge gap in quality like many do). Gentle Giant: Acquiring the Taste (1971) - Free Hand (1975). It’s really a 8 album run from self-titled debut to Interview, but if I had to cut two those bookends are the ones.
