Loved that Pete points out the sound of Townsends guitar on Live at Leeds. I’ve always used the term “Jet Engine Who”..

Never realized that Rick was such a collector - loving this series so far. Not a big fan of live music on CD but discovering some classic gems and love to see you guys talk about it. Thanks!

When I heard Martin was taking a break I was thinking oh no I need a Friday fix. So glad captain Canuck Rick has stepped in. Love his positive and fan approach even though he is a professional musician.

I am the same age as Pete and ,as usual, his exposure matches mine. “Kids are all right “movie in the theatre was a pivotal moment musically for me and my buds. Instantly needed to buy Who albums. Live highlight for me is Shea with the Clash opening.

The Who Rocks America. Gig at Canada. Toronto. It's Hard tour. Just love it. I had on VHS but never find It on DVD. It was ever released on DVD? But Live At Leeds is the ultimate Peak on this matter. Top 5 live band ever. Great show guys.

That is literally the show more than any other that got me into rock music. When I was 12 or so it was played on HBO over and over and I watched it every time I saw it. Later I bought the VHS too. And yes, it is on DVD, I have it. Search for The Who: Live From Toronto. It’s never sounded good on TV or VHS or DVD, all washed out and distant. But the songs and performances are great. There’s a bunch of footage from that tour and for whatever reason Pete seems like he’s playing 50% better than on any other tour.

@@alessandroneri8929 You’re very welcome. It’s an official release and it has a nice small booklet and stereo and 5.1 options but don’t expect too much, it looks and sounds about like it always has but it’s certainly more convenient and accessible to have it on DVD.

That show was soooo much better than the Who's Last live album. That should've been put out as the album

Wow! Rick makes a point that's always been somewhere in my head. About The Who sounding metal in those early days. I always thought that you could tie their music to something like Iron Maiden featuring Paul Diano. Reckless playing with little inhibitions, but expertly written and delivered you know!

The Who's Next: Life House (Super Deluxe) cd comes with 2 live shows from 1971. Live from Young Vic Theater (London) and Live from Civic Auditorium (San Francisco). The cd is a little expensive but it's worth it for the live shows.

Love The Who! It’s true that their full album discography is small but it’s pretty deceptive for two reasons. One is that there were a crap ton of non-album songs that were officially released. You could make multiple more great albums out of all the Naked Eye, Long Live Rock, The Seeker, Relay, and such songs. Plus, since Townshend was 95% of their writing and creativity you have to factor in that he devoted a huge amount of that writing to his own solo career too.

There was also a live show from 1971 Old Vic theatre doing The Who’s Next stuff I believe it was part of The Who’s Next super deluxe edition cd or boxed set

Pete, I am not familiar with some of these live titles you guys mentioned. Are they official releases or bootlegs? Are they good sound quality? Just curious? 😊

Don’t forget The Kids are Alright soundtrack was the only place to get the full version of A Quick One from Rock & Roll Circus.. The movie only started from the Dang! Dang! part at the end ..

BTW for long live versions of "My Generation" there's also the medley "Naked Eye/Let's See Action/My Generation Blues" from 1974, about 15 seconds shorter than the Leeds version. I have it on the collection Greatest Hits Live. It's a medley though, but then so is the 1970 Live At Leeds version. Absolutely a group in the running for greatest live rock band ever. They "stood there and played" until Townshend (supposedly) accidentally broke the head off his Rick in June '64 at a live show. Upset by this he destroyed the rest of the instrument & the audience went wild. As they say "the rest is history"...The earliest live Who I have is from a BBC recording from '65 of "Dancing In The Street". There's a 1965 clip of them doing "My Generation", also from '65, out on YT. Entwistle for some reason playing in a parka while Moon's just in a t-shirt (it's impossible not to focus on Moon playing live). The whole wanting to get away from the 'destroying instruments on stage' schtick is something they shared in common with (later) Jimi... Fillmore East from '68 is a good package (but I like 1970's Live At Hull more) - I love "Relax"...A bit of a joke but their 1968 Magic Bus The Who On Tour isn't live...The Tommy rerelease adds tons of live versions of Tommy tracks from '69. They did the same thing with Who's Next, adding live tracks from '71 recorded at the Young Vic. Who's Next - Life House also contains live performances from around that same time. There's also the collection BBC Sessions (released in 2000 but recorded from 1965-1973)...Live In Amsterdam (1969) is not bad but the sound's not that great - a lot of it's missing the bass/lower frequencies & with The Who especially that's a shame. I've read that the band played Tommy live (whole or almost entirely) live some 160 times in 1969-70 alone! Some other live sets worth mentioning: Join Together, Royal Albert Hall, Isle Of Wight (1970 & 2004), Quadrophenia Live In London, The Who With Orchestra: Live At Wembley, UK, 2019, Live At Kingston. Live At Leeds is ABSOLUTELY the grand daddy Who live album - and one of the best live albums ever!👍✔👌

Back in the 80s I had the VHS of the Toronto show. It was called The Who Rocks America. I made cassettes of it from the VHS audio. Kenney The Lame Jones was a disappointment but the selection of songs was great. I've since learned to love Kenney in the Faces but in The Who he just didn't fit. I saw the 90's Quadraphenia show front row. Zak Starkey was amazing.

Live at Leeds is a musthave on the original vinyl. It is a really live cut without overdubs etc..., it is the original raw sound. I also own the CD, but for the collection, not for playing.

yes the original vinyl is the best one of those 90s reissue CDs took the crackling bootleg noises out! 👎🏻
