Hey Pete, 23-year-old music lover from Australia here. When I was in a Church Youth Group in the late 80s, a former road mgr for The Doors turned Christian went around New England preaching the dangers of Heavy Metal. It’s been 35 years, but I remember that he was particularly hard on AC DC, the album cover of Rush’s Moving Pictures, and John Lennon’s song Imagine. At the end, he would lead a prayer because he was about to play Demon and was afraid that we would rise a devil or something. I’ve been wondering what that band was all this time until Martin showed us the album cover with the cross and remembered it. Thanks Marty!

That was a very entertaining show, gentlemen! I got a good laugh out of some of that! I think I bought that Steppenwolf "Skullduggery" record because of the cool cover, and thinking it wasn't really all that good when I got it home. But, it's still on the shelf down in my basement. Loved the Madcats. Their drummer Glen Gratto is a friend of mine, and still a fantastic drummer, and Grant Fullerton was a fine guitarist and singer. Now, with Bob Seger, I've got to say I'm a big fan of his. That said, if you have that live album you showed, which is a great record, and then "Night Moves" and "Against The Wind," I think you've pretty much got all that you need from him right there.
@SkeltonKnaggsLives3 жыл бұрын
Grant Fullerton was the best bassist Lighthouse ever had. I'm glad I read your comment or I would have never known he was still around and active (has his own website, too). Yeah..."Skullduggery" wasn't that sharp -- the only Wolf LP John Kay never had a writing credit on. And I get overwhelmingly emotional when I hear "Shame On The Moon" & "Against The Wind"-- gets me thinking about a lot of old friends through the years who have passed on or just plain disappeared. Not many songs can do that to me.
@MartyMurray3 жыл бұрын
I think there was another Seger album between "Night Moves" and "Against The Wind," which is also a must-have. The one with "Hollywood Nights" on it. "Stranger In Town." The thing that most people don't realise is that most of Seger's songs are based upon actual events from his life. "Night Moves" - true story about his first girlfriend. "Main Street" - true story. "Sunspot Baby" - true story. "Hollywood Nights" - true story. And if you go way back, you might remember his anti-war single "2 Plus 2 Is On My Mind," when his band was the Bob Seger System.

Meat Loaf’s Bat out of Hell II is one that I haven’t thought about (much less listened to) in eons, and the mere mention of it conjures up many memories. Back in ‘93/‘94, there was no escaping that album, or its much overplayed accompanying lead single “I’d Do Anything for Love” - I remember so many people (myself included) receiving that album as a gift: Birthday, Christmas, you get the picture. Looking back to my school days, it’s astounding to think about the amount of times I’ve witnessed friends (and countless peers) in classrooms, lunch breaks, or even in the hallways, pulling this CD out, and listening to it. Teachers and students, alike - it was almost ridiculous. Needless to say, it sold like hot cakes. Overall, a decent album, but the haunting “Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are” was always my personal favorite on there. I have always loved Megadeth’s The System Has Failed.

Listening to this I heard Martin's comments about Grand Funk Railroad. Nothing but respect for Martin - like me he thinks Sabotage is the best Sabbath album! But like Pete I consider Grand Funk Live a very heavy album, but there are a lot of people that do not consider these guys heavy. I have always mentioned them in the conversation though. So here's what I think the issue is: guitar tone. They share this issue with Ted Nugent. Both Mark Farner and Ted both used a clean, and not very distorted tone, especially early on. Later albums utilized anywhere from a little to a lot more distortion. So when a lot of listeners check out these early albums, they're equating lack of distortion to NOT heavy. But like Ted, GFR played with lots of aggression and rocked hard like their 'heavy metal' peers and I think of them more as heavy or hard rock bands, rather than being like the less aggressive stuff like the Stones or Faces. These were really rocking guitar albums. For that reason I always lump them in with Purple, Sabbath, Zep, Montrose, BOC and other hard rock/heavy metal bands of the period. And regardless of how they are defined by listeners, I think they're full of awesome songs. Grand Funk and Ted Nugent - both great... and very heavy!!

A few great songs on these albums, but neither one comes any close to the masterpiece that is part 1. Not sure if this is the one where Martin picks Women And Children First by Van Halen, but I think Martin doesn't appreciate: 1) how eye-catching that color green is -- I mean, have you ever seen >anything< else that has that shade of green? 2) how iconic that bandphoto is 3) how the band was being funny/suggestive naming the album "Women And Children First" but choosing a cover be four grubby, feral-looking dudes. Also, I'm figuring that the high-brow framing effect was meant to juxtapose the look of these very lowbrow, party-looking guys. It's definitely a nonsensical cover, but I think it was quite intentional. I would imagine that any marketing person would tell you that that cover was perfect for grabbing people's attention as soon as they walked into a music store. I understand that all of these impressions are all subjective but I feel like Martin's got a very specific response to certain color schemes and what they communicate, and that response is quite unique to him. It isn't universal.

It seems to go how we all grew up. I wouldn't start having and buying music till start in the mid 60s. And so I grew in liking stuff along with Ramblin Gamblin Man by Bob Seger and that album and later on in having those other early rock and roll of his. The Live Bullet album is a good album but not if you so want to just be a metal guy. But I always love the energy and rock and roll sound of the period back then, Mitch Ryder and all that coming up as a youngster. So when Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin and the rest to the heavy direction I grew in immediately almost into the where rock music was at the time. After all saw GFR and The harder edge Who albums and saw back when and anything I would see. BOC and all that stuff. Getting the KISS and RUSH albums and all of that stuff. And along the way anyway in the mix to get heavy metal and rock albums and a vast lot of them in the years. And follow into the genres of metal and progressive stuff. I guess you can say I stayed up with music of rock and roll and metal as I have tried to and so I don't discard the early Bob Seger at all. So one can always give it a chance to appreciate the sound of those energy rock and roll driven records. Just lay back and listen or have good background rock and roll. Live Bullet cover misleading not misunderstanding anyone who was a follower of Bob Segar. And the promoting them in the day along with KISS well for the bill, had to have been as to record sales at the time of what was culturally hot at the time. And what was being played and all that. So that's my take. Rock On!!!🎤🎶🎸🎹💖

However these are my picks Kreator-cause for conflict Opeth-sorceress (not bad by any means but my least favorite opeth album) Witchfynde-give em hell Zz top-afterburner Uriah heep-abominog (sorry pete. Always thought that this was really bland commercial pop metal)

Liked Martin showing off all those Canadian bands/albums..... still hoping somewhere down the line you can squeeze in that show about obscure/lesser-known Canadian bands... wouldn't mind hearing some conversation vice words on some webpages.

Back in the Day is probably my favorite. This song reminds me of my youth , growing up and going to concerts as a teenager and seeing bands like Megadeth , MetallicA , ect.

Bat out of Hell 2- Meat Loaf Shakedown Street- Grateful Dead Coliseum Rock- Starz Nostradamus- Judas Priest Revenge-Mayday Spreading the Disease- Anthrax Martin really played a cruel April fools joke by saying Heaven and Hell was a bad Sabbath record

Steppenwolf's - Skullduggery has "Rock & Roll Song" which is a cover of Canadian folkie Valdy's original "Rock & Roll Song" (a better version being the original). Martin should have known this little fact, maybe he did???

Baffled by your comments concerning Demon "The Unexpected Guest"! Just the intro of "Don't break the Circle" is worth the cover price! And the epic finale "Deliver us from Evil" completes an amazing album. Demon went on to record the monumental "The Plague" after this one, and then many more great albums. And the production sounds fine to me! And "The Hunter" is excellent, but music is subjective!

I know I'm inviting scorn here but ... Iron Maiden-Somewhere in Time. It's probably favourite album cover of theirs but I've never actually liked the album itself. Tried many times but always sounded like they were trying to get played on MTV or commercial radio to me. Something they had never bothered about previously. Keyboards not an issue just never been able to get into it

Interesting episodes while I tend to agree with a lot of the cover art choices (except for Mott the Hoople their covers always screamed glam to me which is exactly what they were)some of the musical critiques not so much. 1- Grand Funk- Not heavy??? 2- REO Speedwagon- Nine Lives is a heavy album and IMO their best. 3- Steppenwolf- The three mid seventies albums ( Particularly Slow Flux an underrated 5 star album) are much heavier than the sixties albums and very much in-line with what other mid seventies hard rock bands we doing. 4- Mott the Hopple- The “Mott “ album IMO is one of top three glam albums of the seventies. I could continue but I think this episode will be great for sparking some good natured all in fun musical debates.

Martin why must you always poop on Grand Funk? I got into them much later (early 90’s) when the owner of the used record shop I frequented recommended the first album. Man I LOVED it and went on to buy most of the catalog (up to American Band). Sure they’re not all great but man what a talented power trio. They might not blow your doors off but they were a solid rock and roll band.

Can't agree with Martin on Budgie's "Nightflight". Love this album, don't think it's poppy at all. "I turned to stone" is so heavy!, one of my all time favourite tracks.

I grew up listening to rock/metal. Bought hundreds of albums, many of which were an insult to the genre. This takes me back, great listen/watch

So Grand Funk Live Album isn't heavy, eh?! Well that's news to me. And probably most of the planet. But then Martin is "The Contrarian". Or is this another April Fool's joke like the Heaven & Hell video? Hard to tell sometimes if it's a bit or not.

Hey Pete. I recommend you to check out Fist's "In the red" album. It's really good hard rock, great singer.
