Saw Yngwie in 2019 at a small venue. His band played off to the side with minimal gear while Yngwie had his prop wall of Marshall cabinets. I guess hauling those around is still cheaper than hiring a singer!

In the non-official biography "As above So below" it says it is Yngwies childhood friend from Sweden called Basil. He sings on the swedish gig videos from 1981 and 1982, and he visited yjm in LA for the recording of the video. He was also the singer on the swedish CBS demos of his early work in Swedish Rising Force, that unfortunately was never released. Some of the demos can be heard on yngwies own release of his teenage recordings, a release called "The Genesis". Basil, yngwie and Marcel Jacob were friends from Stockholm.

Mark Boals was fronting the band when I saw them on the Marching Out tour and Jeff Soto had returned on the tour in support of the Trilogy LP. I saw them twice on the Odyssey tour and both of those nights were noteworthy as well. The first time was two nights Before the Odyssey tour officially kicked off. They played a gig at the legendary Baltimore Metal club "Hammerjacks"! I stood at the front of the stage, which was barely waist-high, directly in front of Yngwie. ( I was able to reach up and touch his pedals) They were so good and it was So Loud! My right ear was ringing for three days :( They were drinking the largest bottles of wine I've ever seen in my life and got wasted throughout the show and seemed so euphoric to be there together. I never imagined they'd part ways so quickly. The second time I saw them was three months later at the Baltimore Arena. Lita Ford was scheduled to open but, right around show time there was a public announcement that Lita had been delayed in traffic and wouldn't be able to make it in time for the show. A few minutes later a stagehand walked out with Classical guitar on a stand. About a minute later Yngwie walked out and played classical guitar for about twenty minutes. He then said he was going backstage for a drink and the show would begin in a few moments. The band came on fifteen minutes later and played a brilliant set! Those were the days!!

On lack of input from other members in the creative and decision-making process: "It's true. My band's motto is 'Yngwie or the highway'. Do you think Leonardo Da Vinci allowed someone who came later to add to his paintings? It's impossible. That's the whole issue. I'm not a typical rock 'n' roll guitarist, nor a simple band member. I think I have the answers to the Boals/Soto confusion Yngwie goes into detail in his autobiography Soto was out in the middle of the Marching Out tour which is why Boals does the " I'll See The Light.." video (which BTW was shot at the Universal Studios Theme park Conan attraction ) That is Boals in the " You Don't Remember.." wearing a WIG much to Yngwie 's amusement. When he started flaking out Soto came back for the tour. Saw JSS front the band opening for Maiden in early 87 in New Haven

Sidney makes a good point about formatting cover art for LP vs CD. The CD art can suffer because of inherent lower rez ... and marketers emphasize highlighting faces, hair and eyes....so those get top priority for CD reissues and remasters.

I saw Yngwie play at the Marquee Club in London in 1985. It was, and still is, the loudest experience of my life. It was ear destroying. A Saturn V could have been taking off next door and he would have drowned it out. God knows how he can still hear, my ears are still ringing. It was an immense gig.

I wish the original Marching Out Rising Force sound would have kept going... Best stuff I've ever heard. Ultimate line-up, ultimate vibe of a sound. Disciples of Hell blew me away and I've never seen it topped, although I do love Trilogy as well. I loved his occult dark classical stuff the most. It was like he was being ridden by the Beast back then. I think it all ended after his Ferrarri crash, when he kind of got scared of the Occult vibes and suddenly felt vulnerable.

I like Yngwie. I certainly can do without a large chunk of his output (and, in general, his lengthy instrumental excursions bore me to tears, if truth be told) but, like Rich, my favourite album has always been Trilogy (Liar my fav song on the album.) That album is still the one I reach for, almost exclusively, when I'm in the mood to hear some Yngwie.

The "Ill see the Light" Conan video set was a Universal theme park set. The parts of the video showing non band members are cast from the theme show that did an 'Hourly" scripted run through of the first Conan movie...kind of. I'm a big YJM fan, and have been since I first got the Steeler album. First saw him open for Dio in '85, life changing concert. My playing style still has a lot of Yngwie/neo classical in it after all these years. My favs are all in chronological order Rising force until Fire and Ice... after that he is repeating himself or just eating his own tail.

My intro to Yngwie was when he was the opening act for AC/DC for the Flick of the Switch tour (the memory might be a bit off). Anyway my friends did not want to catch the opening act but I had read about him and insisted that we go. Great show. And then I when I heard he was teaming up with JLT, I was pumped. I was introduced to Rainbow by the Stone Cold video. I've always been a fan of JLT. Wished they had lasted. Very disappointed when it broke down.

Whenever I start to get into a new band the first two things I check are how lengthy their Discography is and how many lineup changes has the band had. Pete you're 100% right on that. If I look at a band that's got 7-10+ Albums, but only 1 constant member, it makes me reluctant to get into them. Some bands make it work, but often it'll make it take longer to get me into a band, Helloween and Stratovarius are prefect examples of that.

I was lucky to get to know Joe Lynn Turner a bit, almost a decade ago. He was quite proud of his lyrics for Odyssey, and told me he thought Yngwie's own lyrics suck. With that said, I do think Yngwie writes good vocal melodies, even if the actual words are silly. Pete - Ripper only did one session with Yngwie. Most of the songs went onto Perpetual Flame, and then the rest were used for Relentless. Yngwie then filled out Relentless with new instrumentals. Sydney - as a big JLT fan, you really should give Inspiration a good listen. As Pete said, Manic Depression is the only song Yngwie himself sings (though he also does Spanish Castle Magic on a special edition), the rest is JLT, Soto and Boals. I love that album, and besides enjoying his take on the songs, it has possibly his best cover art. Rich - I like a lot of Yngwie's later work, especially Unleash the F-ing Fury. I find the early stuff often sounds a bit dated, so I enjoy the heavier sound he developed (I also have an aversion to Vescera, whether with Yngwie or with Takasaki). 10. Attack!! 9. Trilogy 8. Alchemy is a really good album, the production is a little off but it’s not bad. It’s doesn’t get much love but Leonardo, wield my sword, asylum are all really good songs with mark boals killing it

A little context on the Jeff Scott Soto / Mark Boals transitions within the band...Jeff announced at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey on July 19, 1985 that he was leaving Rising Force and it would be his last show (last night of the Rape & Pillage Tour). Marching Out, which had been recorded for almost a year but had been delayed forever, was finally released a month later and Mark Boals immediately replaced Jeff when Yngwie was touring to support the new album and opening for AC/DC. Hence Mark in the "I'll See the Light Tonight" video. A year goes by, it's now September 1986, Trilogy comes out and Boals now the official singer is featured in the "You Don't Remember" video, and the band begins to do some club dates in support of Trilogy. Within a month, Yngwie hooks up with the opening slot on the Triumph tour and Boals is quietly replaced with Jeff Scott Soto. Obviously no Internet back then, so this news was unknown to most at the time, so anyone who saw the later shows of that Triumph tour in late 86 expecting to see Mark, probably saw Jeff instead. Crazy year for Yngwie fans.

Ho yes ! I had not listen much at all to YM before this year and I am now going trought his collection by time of apearance. I am at Eclipse (1990) and I have been quite impressed with everything I have listened to so far. This review informs me that it is going downhill for YM during the 1990's and it doesn't improve during the 2000's. Still, I will check everything. I am 100% in line with you about Odyssey. I have spent two weeks discovering every track and listening to the whole album every day and I love it all. I too am a Rainbow fan and I particularly like the JLT era therefore it is a real pleasure to have him on this album. I have always known JLT under the shadow of Ritchie Blackmore so I had no idea of his songwriting skills because we all know that Ritchie alone is enough to make great songs. But, Odyssey has a lot in common with Rainbow+JLT so that can just be the JLT factor and my admiration for him grew immensely. Highlight of the album Cristal Ball ! You all mentionner how much you love that track ;) Rising Force, and others.. I also have a very sweet tooth for Krakatu !! Fantastic instrumental.

Been a fan of Yngwie since 1990/the Eclipse album; and I can say I totally agree with Sydney: Love Malmsteen as a guitarist, but not as a singer. Couple of exceptions though: On A Serious Note, from The Genesis album; and Magic City from Perpetual Flame. 🤔🤔 Top 5 favorite albums: 5: Odyssey 4: Trilogy 3: Fire And Ice 2: Facing The Animal 1: Eclipse

I was a great fan of Yngwie, it was like when Van Halen first appeared, everywhere u looked there was a shredder , i don’t get this thing about Turners era, they solos all sound similar,the songs sound like elevator music for headbangers. I suppose Yngwie fulfills what Blackmore used to do, an entertaining live act/showman, if Yng put as much time into songs as his solos who knows? Luckily he has the first 2 which will sustain his career

Didn't listen to him much, because I didn't know to. I should've because he is so talented, in so many ways. He deserves everyone's recognition, and thank you for giving him that here today. Very cool musician. I listened to his Amazing Bach, Paganini & Adago Live On Stage video. 👏👏👏 Brilliant man.

The cover for Rising Force is great! Looked great on a t shirt and I still have mine from when he opened for AC/DC back in 1985. The first tune I ever heard from him was Now Your Ships Are Burned, which is still one of my favorites to this day. I was absolutely blown away when I first heard him play. I have to admit, however, that as influential as his style became, to me, he was a bit of a one trick pony. I didn’t always keep track of him, but saw him several times over the years. There’s a sameness to what he does that just makes me want to return to those first two albums.
