What City Boy is best at is telling stories. They manage to pack evening-filling movies into five-minute-long songs. The greatest story ever told.

Love Love Love City Boy, very underrated band. So many levels to them. I was a huge fan in the 70's and still listen to them now. Such a shame that they never really broke through but I guess they were so quirky and diverse that they were very hard to categories. But I just got what they were doing right from the start. Sunset Boulevard, that song get's me every time.

Great to see so much love for City Boy. I have all seven of their albums. The one i love most is the self titled debut. I just have seen it very cheap because I bought it when I'd never heard anything by the band. I was bowled over by how good it was and got Dinner at The Ritz when it was released. I felt they drifted from art rock to a more commercial sound as they chased success and left them, only to return in the CD era. The album I like least is It's Personal. That's the only one that I was disappointed when I played it. Thanks for telling everyone about the band, they definitely should have had more success.

So glad I found this! Love that you gave this great band some exposure. I've got 'em all and wholeheartedly agree that they're all worth having. One thing I think you gave a little short shrift to is Roy Ward's vocals. He brought a whole new dimension when he joined the band, and he was a helluva drummer as well. One of the great tragedies is that he did not go on to have the kind of success Mike Slamer did after the band called it quits.

Mike Slamer is a really unique and unfortunately a really underappreciated Joe Satriani/Vai/Lukather etc guitar level player, years before all these tremendous guys... His tone is and still is incredible. Check the Seventh Key albums, Slamer - Nowhere Land, Devil's Hand, the Streets albums and Steve Walsh's - Glossolalia solo album were he is out of control...

I absolutely love it when you rank the albums of bands I adore. I commend you on the thought and effort you have put into this City Boy programme. It was a joy to watch and listen to. In pafticular, Young men gone West does it for me, a gorgeous, varied album from the humour of 'the honeymooners' to the bite of 'bad for business' to the endearing 'millionaire.' Anyway, I gotta run. I need a new car. I ate the last one.

I am so grateful for this channel. If there was any doubt about which is my favorite KZbin station (and there wasn’t) this episode would erase them. City Boy is one of those bands I never heard on the radio growing up, but I liked the album covers in the ads in Circus magazine, and I gave them a chance. Great move! This band was all over the map musically, with soaring harmonies, killer hooks and unforgettable songwriting. I would also pick “Book Early” as my favorite, but all their albums are worthwhile, even though the later ones weren’t as focused. Thanks you, Mr. Pardo, for another great show on a largely forgotten band that still matters to me.

Big fan of City Boy right from the start in the mid 70's. Later on got to be friends with Chris Dunn, their bass player. Cool cat! Some obscure trivia...the only band for which 'Mutt' Lange produced five albums. My rankings disagree with yours a bit, but that's how it goes... 1) The Day The Earth Caught Fire (Roy Ward vocals on this record are amazing) 2) City Boy (great debut) 3) Dinner At The Ritz (first thing I heard by them...was instantly hooked) 4) Book Early ("Cigarettes" alone is worth the purchase of this album) 5) Young Men Gone West (saw them on this tour at the Civic Theater in Akron, OH. Great venue back in the day...and a great performance) 6) It's Personal (has some flashes of their 70's stuff, but didn't quite grab me) 7) Heads Are Rolling (after The Day The Earth Caught Fire, this one was rather disappointing)

I'm going to spend some time today listening to their tunes here on KZbin -- both the handful I used to know and probably a bunch that will be new to me. As much as I love your videos on bands I love (Steely Dan, Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult, and tons more), I really enjoy these that help me discover -- or in this case, rediscover -- music I'd not be listening to otherwise. Keep up the great mix!

Book Early ("What a Night" deserved to follow "5.7.0.5" into the Top 40) 4. The Day the Earth Caught Fire ("New York Times" coulda, shoulda been a hit) 5. Thank you for talking about this band. I've been a fan since 1978 after hearing a clip from an LP on Chicago radio. 5.7.0.5 off of Book Early was being advertised and without hearing anything more than just the brief snippet, I ordered the album and then got everything before and after. This band is a real gem. :) I had to stop the video to go listen to several, starting with Heads Are Rolling... and a few others. Geez, I don't think I've paused a video so many times in a looooong time. ;) Wow, I had not quite realized how big an influence City Boy was on the Mark III lineup of my original band (early-mid 80s). The lead singer/songwriter introduced me to City Boy and was a huge fan of the band. I hear a lot of the influence in retrospect. :D Thanks for the flashback, Pete!

Thanks for doing this show on City Boy. You do have great insights on the stuff you are reviewing. Have all the City Boy catalogue on vinyl and various CD formations and have been a fan since the second album. Really cool that you mentioned the link with Max Webster which I think is very appropriate as they are one of my fave bands as well and I always thought they were transatlantic musical cousins. And two absolute genius guitar players with Mike Slamer and Kim Mitchell in their ranks. Definitely would pick one of their albums to be dessert island stuff if prompted. In my list Heads are Rolling would be more to the top of the list. But as you said, it could differ from day to day. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for dwelving into City Boy. A band I find notoriously little information about. Today I received two of their vinyl albums, finally completing my collection. I am contemplating making a video celebrating this but again, my knowledge is fairly thin on the ground. I have a feeling they were fairly «big» in my native Norway. A lot of their albums on discogs have been manufactured in Norway. Their last album, all vinyl copies on discogs seem to be Norwegian prints! I got my first City Boy album in 1979, the Day the Earth Caught Fire. I was 7 and inrolled in Scandinavian Record Club. I would stare at that album cover for long times, it was so cool and sinister! Only took 44 years to complete the collection! Cheers again for the video, kind regards Morten

It is the best recorded also and probably the most consistent in its quality of songs from beginning to end. I have the 2008 reissue of Young Men Gone West and the opening track on it is Bordello Night, and Dear Jean is second. And it's funny, the back cover has a typo and says "Dear John". Then there is "She Got Styles" instead of "She's Got Style"

Awesome band that I was lucky enough to see live twice, and they were just as good as on record. I met Lol Mason, a few years after they split and just before The Maisonettes single came out, and he was a thoroughly nice bloke.

July 31st 2020 will mark one year since Lol Mason died. He wrote for various artists from Sam Fox to Sarah Brightman. He also collaborated on the soundtrack for the Oliver Stone movie "Every Given Sunday" and later worked on comedy scripts. Much missed.

So nice hearing someone illuminate how good this band was. My favorite albums are the first 2; They were so eclectic sounding. Out of all the bands they share a "sound" with, the one I don't hear about, is a (rocked -up) Supertramp . Great band !

Apart from somebody ironically wearing a City Boy teeshirt in a 2004 episode of Vic & Bob's Catterick, I hadn't heard of them since Top of the Pops in 1979. Catching Up Time!

UNDERRATED band! I listen to them more than any band (other than Starz) from that era. Zero bad releases.

Haha - i've always been a fan of City Boy but didn't realise that I had 6 out of 7 albums (all on vinyl of course). Blimey - I must have been a fan! 😂

Such a cool hybrid of Prog/Glam/Arena/Hard/Pop Rock. Hadn’t heard of them until I heard Pete mention them on his channel a few times. My favorite is probably The Day the Earth Caught Fire, especially the title track, ‘Interrupted Melody’, and the epic ‘Ambition’.

I enjoyed your run-down of your favourite records by CB. As you say, quirky as anything and yet accessible, and all the albums are strong, not really a bad one (I have 4 of the 7). I like how their sound changed from prog to ELO/Queen-like to New Wave-tinged by the end. With those big harmonies, clever lyrics and more hooks than a cloakroom it's a shame the Birmingham boys didn't get quite the big breaks they could have done!

Love City Boy since I first stumbled upon this vinyl in a small shop...... debut album is still the best in my opinion.

He also produced a great little album by Brian Kennedy called’The Great War Of Words’. Seen him playing as a support act to Suzanne Vega in 1990 and had to buy the album there and then.

@@davidwinthrop7077 Thanks David for that nugget of info on the Brian Kennedy album produced by Tim Friese Green . Apparently it was produced inbetween a couple of Talk Talk albums and has that influence on it . I see that you can pick that album up quite cheap on Amazon . I think I might be taking a chance on it . Lol

Interesting band. There was a lot of 10cc in there also maybe Supertramp. My favourite track is State Secrets from Dinner At The Ritz. Clever lyrically and musically. Mike Slamer was a great guitarist
