Self Titled About Face On An Island Rattle That Lock The one song that stands out the most for me is "Near the End" from "About Face". His solos on this song are exceptional! Rivals anything he has ever done and Jeff Porcaro's (rip) drumming is amazing!

David is my favorite guitarist. I have his first 2 on vinyl. A cousin of mine gave me his 1st album on vinyl and years later I bought the second one when it came out maybe within a year or so I don't fully remember exactly. Anyway my number 4 is his Rattle that lock 3rd is On an island 2nd About Face and 1st is his self titled David Gilmour. I have all 4 on c.d. I am glad you did his collection of solo albums.

David Gilmour is a sensational guitar player and vocalist. Have to say that some times I don't know if I like his guitar playing or his singing more, although of course he is more famous for his guitar I guess. Great albums both with Pink Floyd and in his solo career. Just listened to his Live in Pompeii album, very good!!!

I bought it in 1990 and was only disappointed because it wasn't as good as "US and Them" but it's still probably better than "David Gilmour" (there's also the short instrumental opening track of Richard Wright's "Broken China"; called "Breaking Water" I've gotta listen to "Wet Dream" again!

When his latest album came out he had a show about making it. It was interesting to watch as his is very methodical and layers his music so much. It shows when you listen to his music. I recommend watching the documentary.

David Gilmour has a vocal & guitar style that exudes a thoughtful,progressive,rock style that is comforting & always an interesting listen. Never been a huge Pink Floyd fan;but there's no denying their influence within the confines of rock history!!! David is a huge part of that legacy....my favorite solo release from him - ON AN ISLAND. Glad you brought up his sax "cred". Which I feel needs to be used more in the bluesy,progy rock releases @ least as a "enhancement" of direction....Springsteen & Mc Cafferty come to mind.

Yes! The Debut and About Face are by FAR his best Solo work. His latter catalog is very "sleepy" and not very involving-sounding. But to your first comment, I LOVE the dry, simple, clean Production and Audio Mix of the first record. It's a great CD to test High-End Audio gear !

That's one scratched up Telecaster on the back cover of About Face. I think it's one of his faves, and he still has it. The cover art on the first solo album must be one of the dullest efforts by Hypgnosis, but it's a great album.

The best concert blu-ray I've ever seen is Remember That Night, from the Royal Albert Hall on the tour backing On An Island. Guest appearances from David Bowie, Graham Nash, and David Crosby. The sound and editing are incredible. Best of all... Rick Wright is on stage so you're seeing half of the classic Floyd lineup. I can't recommend this dvd or blu-ray more strongly.

Hi Pete, Nice tribute to the man that gives us wings with his guitar solos. Surprising that two legends of the Floyd have very limited solo input. Our lists are almost flipped. I think a couple of tracks off his first album are fantastic, but never got much into the rest. That said, Gilmour is one of my favorite guitarists and Floyd is a top 3 band for me, so I enjoy all these records. 4) On An Island 3) David Gilmour 2) Rattle That Lock 1) About Face About Face was huge for me. I love that whole record. Rattle That Lock was his 2nd most melodic entry and I like it's gentle melodies and moods. I think it is great. I saw that he is releasing a new song, so maybe we will get a 5th one soon!

Roger’s albums are better than any sleeping pill now and the fact I now cringe when I hear his voice. Roger is stifled as a writer now and even Neil Peart was a better writer than Roger after 1980 and grew as a lyricist whereas Roger is stuck on I hate war, I hate Right Wingers, I hate Christianity and Capitalism and love terrorists and anarchists. Plus Roger’s now Britney Spears like in lip syncing and surrounded by female singers who ruin every song live and dances. He is now what Neil wrote about on Losing It “Sadder still to watch it die than never to have known it”. Amused to Death suffers from the CD age and is 32 minutes too long. Radio KAOS is my favorite album of his and he should have ended with it.

I actually have never rated them best to not so great because each is fantatstic for the time that they were released. They differ so much but they represent where he was and where he is headed - listen to his new single as an example . Whenever I listen to any of these great albums I remind myself that they are David Gilmour albums and not substitute Pink Floyd albums . I don't want him to be trying to bow to pressure from PF fans and making an album as a compromise to what HE wants to be doing! So , none of them for me is better than another, they are all magical.

I really can´t get into the # 4 that much, don´t fear to say "quite boring". , On the other side "On An Island" is so good, such a superb opus of him, think about those mixed emotions on public and critics when released. "Too slow", what were you expecting to hear ? Motorhead?. Finally those like me who purchased his self titled debut album when released love it most, It´s wonderful. No more experiments next time Mr. David ! One Rattle was enough.

his debut 78 album solo is just fantastic I love it start to finish I still do. that tone was getting with that compressor on black along with the big muff. such awesome cuts on there. about face was too poppy I wasn't into it. it's my least favorite of solo DG rattle that lock is pretty good once you play it a few times. and then on an island.. I like with him and Polly Samson come up with his wife she's been really good for a lot of his music. up until a few years ago The weather Channel on the local on forecast used to use Milhaus the kick-off to his solo album for years are you big Roxy Music fan Pete?

You were surprised that David only had 4 albums but for all intensive purposes the Pink Floyd album A Momentary Lapse of Reason is a David Gilmour solo album. That's how it began but he was convinced to call it Pink Floyd which he had the rights to. The producer made some suggestions to make it sound more Floyd Like. Drummer Nick Mason only drums on a few tracks . Former Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright is listed as a special guest but only performs on 1 song.

David and Bob Ezrin co-produced. Momentary Lapse was David and Nick Mason and Nick did all of the sound effects for the album but his confidence in drumming had declined and was more interested in his auto racing hobby than the drums at the time. By Christmas 1986 David and Bob along with Nick and a returning Rick Wright who added keyboard overdubs and is on Learning to Fly, On the Turning Away, Terminal Frost and Sorrow. Nick drummed on Learning to Fly and Terminal Frost. The rest of the drums were either Carmine Appice or Jim Keltner or programmed. The Updated and Remixed version of the album which was supervised by David and Bob Ezrin had Nick recording the drums on all of the tracks now except they kept the programmed drums on Sorrow but Nick added new drums to The Dogs of War, One Slip, On the Turning Away, Yet Another Movie and a new drum track for Terminal Frost. Since Rick passed away David, Bob and Andy Jackson added outtakes and live Rick keyboards from the Delicate Sound recordings and outtakes and added Rick to The Dogs of War, One Slip, Yet Another Movie and Round and Around. More of Rick was added to Signs of Life. I don’t listen to the original album anymore and was replaced by the Updated and Remixed version.

The first album to me was refreshing. It came it between Animals and The Wall, probably while Waters was obsessing and perfecting the Wall. It's great Gilmour guitar but stripped down to a trio and basic song arrangements. The trio btw, was his band Jokers Wild that he was in before Floyd, which included Rick Willis (Foreigner/Roxy Music, etc.).

David said the first album in hindsight was a jam album done in three weeks. About Face (my favorite) was planned as a proper album and he got people like Jeff Porcaro and Pino Palladino to play on the album and he looked back on it as a lot of great moments but the sound and flavor of it was too 1980s for his advancing age. He wrote all of the lyrics on the album. On an Island is great but it was better live. Rattle That Lock is a phenomenal album as well. Metallic Spheres with The Orb he was just adding guitar textures to it. David and Richard Wright had the best solo albums.

In my opinion Pink Floyd is one of the best examples of a band that is greater than the sum of its parts. The fact that several of them were architecture students is really telling when it comes to their sound. Roger Waters conceived the overall project and ‘look’, Rick Wright provided the solid foundations, David Gilmour gave it its aesthetic shape and Richard Wright added all manner of flourishes and fine details. On their own they are nowhere near as effective. I like the odd tune on their solo albums but they aren’t a patch on the albums they made together. ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ was the huge success it was because each member was fully contributing ideas and felt fulfilled. As the group became less democratic the music suffered a little.

Pete Townshend put his original demo for All Lovers re Deranged on his compilation of demos, Scoop 3. His version is more like a ballad with a slightly amped up chorus. Pete's version kind of sounds like it could have been on All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes.

To me On an Island, as the name might suggest, is kind of a combination of Pink Floyd and the lighter side of Jimmy Buffett. Great video--DG is one of the greats, for sure. I give a little more weight to Rattle That Lock....yes, his voice is a lot less flexible with more age grit, but the musicality of the tunes is right up there. I would go: 1. On an Island 2. A Momentary Lapse of Reason - (Pink Floyd in name only) 1. On an Island (His crowning Jewel, could have been a Pink Floyd album - Production is outstanding). I say that about Momentary because it was a solo album and Mason and Wright were brought in late to the production. Out of all the Pink Floyd albums it also sounds the least like Pink Floyd. I am not saying that in a negative way, its an amazing record. To me, most of the members of Pink Floyd solo stuff is hit or miss. But I love Pink Floyd and will take any bit and piece I can find. Nick Mason's records are crazy and all over the place, Roger Waters records are strange and epic at times but leave you wanting to kill yourself, Wrights records are fantastic and show his great song writing abilities that seems to have been ignored by Waters... But to me its all in the PF Universe and even the weaker parts have hidden gems in them.

I think On An Island is the best in terms of listening to it as a whole, but there are better individual songs on his other albums. I will say that my least favorite would have to be About Face although the songs Murder, Let’s Get Metaphysical, and Near the End are brilliant.
