Any modern 3/4 or 1 ton diesel pickup can handle upward of 18k lbs towing. Nothing bigger or heavier than some of the 5th wheels that RVers are hauling around the country.
@Mad1Mike Жыл бұрын
A Dodge 3,500 is rated at 15,100. It sure can tow more, I have done it locally. The problem comes with lawyers if you get into an accident. There would also be an issue with insurance. Just because you can does not mean you should.

And a trailer to haul 18,000 lbs weighs how much?
@boomerantics9586 Жыл бұрын
It certainly has features that make it appealing for doing the Great Loop, et al, such as shallow draft, short air draft and, in our case as seasonal boaters, trailerability. If I were single it might be ideal but the stateroom separated by a weather deck, lack of an island berth and wet head are non-starters for the wife.

As a past Gulf of Alaska long liner, that pilot house is the best ride. That concept is stellar and converting a system to simi-planning would be a big seller as well...Utilizing some of the new solar roof panels and power options would be a good branch development and keeping the form and function would keep those speedy's happy. But overall truly a well-thought-out little ship. KUDOS from Tugboat Willy

Clifford DeRouen U S M C. As owner and Capt of 50 foot oyster dredge the swing 34 34 four blade four inch shaft. Five years after I purchased the vessel I installed a nozzle making the nozzle in two pieces I was able to swing my same wheel. I built it my self with rolled aluminum quarter inch plate. It improves every function speed by almost half. Thrust!!!!???. The first time I dropped the clutch in fowerd it almost knocked me down. The next year I removed the nozzle and placed a slight taper to the aft end of the nozzle. And we'll that improves every function. With the tapered of the nozzle it improves the proformance to almost half. Saves on fuel and rpm

definitely a nice boat, but for Long Island Sound a version with a stronger engine would be very helpful to enable the boat to transit some of the tidal rip areas when the water is running through, especially if there is any kind of chop. We have everyday tides up to +- 5-6 kts. and without a stronger engine, the boat will have to time its voyages for the general area of slack tide.
@Mike383HK9 ай бұрын
I Know, the sound is too much for a boat like that, especially Huntington Harbor.
@mattlechner84429 ай бұрын
I'm not a naval architect, just going by what the guy says on the tape which is cruising speed 6-7 kts. and I assume that means in flat water, more or less. Huntington Harbor is in the inner part of Huntington Bay, not really sure what you are referring to. That's not a particularly challenging area of Long Island Sound but if you get out into the Sound there you have 3-4 knot currents on a regular basis, and you can easily get 5-6 foot chop. And there are areas where the currents are more like 5-6 knots, and slightly larger waves, those areas can get quite choppy. The guy says its an 85 horsepower motor, so maybe the issue is the way they have it geared, I don't know. But I can tell you in Long Island Sound if you have a motorboat, you want one that does more than 6-7 knots cruising speed. It's not fun if the sea kicks up and you're underpowered and lose steerage. You can wind up not being able to make a safe port. It looks like a very nice boat. Has some displacement, nice freeboard, low center of gravity, enclosed steering station, definitely a nice boat. But in L.I.S. you do in fact need to be able to maintain a bit more speed than 6-7 kts. including heading into a chop. And when they say 6-7 kts. cruising speed they probably mean in flat water, or pretty flat. Maybe different gearing would resolve it, I don't know. Again, I am not a naval architect, but it looks to be a pretty robust little vessel, probably there's a good chance they could offer a version with a little more power; either with more horsepower or different gearing.
@mattlechner84429 ай бұрын
also, I know they can also tinker around with different propellers. If I had to guess, they have the boat set up to get great gas mileage, but in L.I.S. if there's the slightest bit of weather, you'll probably want a little more power. Either more horsepower, different gearing, different propeller - that's all for a naval architect to ponder.
@PatMonksАй бұрын
@mattlechner8442 If you add more power all it will do is raise the bow, and bury the stern. The boat will become very tender as it does this. This is a full displacement, not semi-displacement. It baffles me why people think they can take an economical boat with adequate power and want to fundamentally change it into something it was never meant to be.
@mattlechner8442Ай бұрын
@@PatMonks actually that is not correct. The boat needs more power, unless you have some kind of special plan to deal with the 5-7 knot tidal flows that are commonplace in channels all around the world. And God Forbid there is a little chop. Probably the propeller engineers have to be consulted, see what they say about installing a variable pitch propeller, or simply one that throws more water.

I think this is what my boat wants to be when it grows up. But I can love it just how it is, and it's affordable. (Finn 8, 26ft, centre cockpit, aft wheelhouse/"saloon", fwd "stateroom", sorry, doghouse, 25hp Beta.)

I really wonder about the range. That's 10 nm per gallon. At what speed? I make just about 10nm per gallon in a 7500# sailboat driven by an 18hp yanmar steaming at 5kts 2500 rpm. This boat is twice the displacement and four times the hp. I dont get it.

I don't understand the use case for this boat. A trailerable full displacement hull with two thousand mile range, access to engine room only in good weather, sleeping and toilet/shower areas accessible only by braving the weather. Dragging your dinghy out from under your bed, hauling it up the stairs into the cockpit to inflate it is not my idea of a fun cruise. Eighty gallons of water on a boat with a 2,000 mile range is a joke. This is a day boat, at best a weekender, with aspirations that it can't fulfill.
